Mirro 8QT Pressure Cooker...HELP
    #1632543 - 06/14/03 02:42 AM (13 years, 11 months ago)

With a Mirro 8QT Pressure Cooker the instruction manual says (shortened version):

1. Check the vent tube and clean it if nessasary...then place the pressure control on top of the vent tube.

2. Fill the cooker with food and added the required amount of water. Never fill the pressure cooker more than 2/3's the way up.

3. Place cooker on high heat until the pressure control behins to release steam. The pressure control will rock or jiggle when cooker reaches desired pressure/ Lower heat so that the pressure control rocks gently. Count cooking time from the time the pressure control starts rocking.

Ok after reading that my sisters brothers aunts dogs previous owners second cousin who was married to jerry spirnger and had sex for money at the age of 12 has only 2 questions....

1. I'm correct in saying that I don't have to put water in the pressure cooker when pressure cooking cans....right?

2. Is that 2/3 limit very important or can I put the jars higher than 2/3 the way up?

Well. How are you going to build up pressure to actually "pressure" cook/can if
you do not have any water or other fluid to release steam to build pressure?
-So yes you need to put water in the cooker. Check your instruction manual for
information on canning instead of cooking.-

The 2/3 limit is for cooking food. If you get higher than that level you may have
problems operating the cooker. (i.e. improper pressure buildup...)

It doesn't say anything specifc about water......if the cans are in there the water shouldn't go over the lids of the jars right? or can the water go over the lids if they are sealed and the holes are covered....

I just don't know how much water to put in....

I have that pressure cooker. Put an inch or so of water, you need too. Raise the temp slowley, and it is 15psi after around 15 minutes (the nob will be shaking steadily). For BRF allow 20 minutes at that temp, for grain, allow 45 minutes. Only 1 contaminated grain jar ever. That is a good buy, have fun.
