I'm debating whether to use a monotub or several shoebox for my first attempt at cultivation. Are there in differences between the two teks in terms of yields, contamination or colonization time?

I'd say the biggest difference is in the conditions. Monotubs are dialed in exactly to maintain conditions. Shoeboxes are more of a best guess and close enough. In my climate shoeboxes dry out a lot, need extra babying which at the end of the day the organism wont appreciate as much as you might hope.

If you don't want to build a huge monotub, build a small one. The principles can be scaled down. Advantages also include the ability to stack them, pretty tricky stacking shoeboxes.

Full agreement.

My dry ass conditions hate shoeboxes. I have had to work too hard on the LITFA part of my grows that I only use shoeboxes for questionable shit and that’s just to get a clone if I need to save the genetics for whatever reason I have.

Plus the harvest is apart of my consideration. You can get a decent amount from a shoebox. But nothing more rewarding to
Me than a good ass mono harvest with music on and cramming a dehydrator full.

I started using whole oats in 1qt jars. I followed Bods easy AF tek.

The jars appear to be colonized.  I shook around 20% and 80%. I'm not seeing anything that looks like mold or bacteria. It smells ok.

My question is, the mycellium covering the oats is very thin.  It's not the dense, solid white block I see with WBS.

Is it normal on oats for the mycellium to look really thing? Like the grains are obscured, but you can still see the golden colOK.

I'm wondering if it's maybe an under hydration issue.

Pic would help.

Smell doesn’t always give us full story.

My rye berries it does usually look thin. I have to wait till I flip the jar upside down and it slides before I tend o feel comfortable with it

Shoeboxes are great. Monotubs are huge and needs lots of spawn, shoeboxes are can use one jar of spawn.

So if it's your first time contamination could be an issue. Get a few shoeboxes and put one jar to each box, if you get contam oh well dump it and you still have other shoeboxes chugging along.

If the monotub goes south, it's back to square one/a few months more waiting.

I thought I needed a monotub but I love my shoeboxes. You will have lots of mushrooms either way.

Thank you!

Double checking my train of thought.

Just got into cryovials. But I have a yeti clone on grains.

I should be able to take one of the grains too agar, clean that up and that should still save that clone genetics.

Has anyone used just honey and agar-agar in their agar recipe? Im making my first "from scratch" batch and most recipes include potato flakes or something but I'm wondering if I really need it

You can use just simple sugar like honey or SITR etc, but the culture tends to get sluggish and lazy on it. Most people opt for something a bit more complex hence why you see potato being used so much. I would personally consider the potato essential and the honey optional.

Thanks that's good to know. I was looking around and i even have brf so I might try making a batch with that instead. The malt extract is hard to find at a store so I wanted to go with what I have.

You basically just need a starchy water. I've used Gnocchi boil water (without added salt), rice vermicelli boil water and even ramen boil water with success.

So you just mix the boil water and agar and badaboom?

So in theory I could have rye berry soak/boil water and that would be all I need to mix with agar?

^ Indeed yes, but with one caveat: those grains are treated with a bunch of pesticides, fungicides, and has a lot of potential run off. I've done it before many times, but switched over to human grade food sources.

It's safer to use foodgrade sources. Check the link in my sig, it even has grain boil water vs gnocchi.

Hey guys. I had kept hydrated coir in a grow bag sealed to use for later cuz I had made too much extra. I thought coir just doesnt contaminate but theres some kind of mold growing in it.

Why did that happen?

Was it used for grains at any point? Leftover starches can be a vector.
