No. That would reduce the chances. Overall, it would be best to do it without any grain at all

I prefer a 1:4 ratio, smaller grains/seeds will give you more inoculation points and in most cases speed up substrate colonization and increase success rate, but it comes down to clean spawn and proper pasteurization.

If i make coir and mix it with pasteurised composted manure its fine right? I dont need to pasteurise the coir as well?

If the grain looks suspicious then I would top it with casing rather than 1:1 and fruit it in a small container.  Or mix it with substrate and put it outside somewhere in the shade with grass for cover.

Outside of that, if you are using carbon in your substrate such as straw, you want less grain.  And as gulis mentioned, and as strawboys grows show, you can get great results without using any grain at all if you use straw.

And there's a lot of folks that are growing without straw, so you're going to hear different optimal ratios from different folks depending on what their substrate preference is.

Personally, I've done a number of grows just off of popcorn cased with peat and a bit of worm castings.  Which has the advantage that you can top fruit it in a little jar, worry less about bacteria, and breed quickly.  Or just get fruits if you want to scope them or check out friends crosses (which is why I ran so many popcorn jars last fall).

I typically do 1:2 - 1:4 when I'm not using straw.

But ultimately it's about bioavailable carbon to bioavailable nitrogen (30:1).  In other words, for every 30 g of digestible sugar, they want around 1 g of digestible nitrogen.

So again, a lot comes down to personal preference rather than best.  And I don't believe all grains are equal as far as bioavailable nutritients.  Or that all Copelandia even have the same preferences.

Here's some old popcorn only fruit just for fun.

India

Sus bvi qt jar spawned to a take out tray

Early bvi backcrosses for f1 spores.  Note the structure in this first photo, that's cords/consolidation.

F1 or 2 of the same

And an unstable cross some of my friends worked on.  These had a really cool spore color under the microscope, like crimson.  But folks I know that have ran this cut out struggled to get it to drop the next generation.  I think it's like (MiB*komodo island) * (bvi*eungai).  So a lot of different genetics in it that ended up not very viable.

So let’s pretend I’m growing strictly for the purpose of enjoying fresh fruits as they mature. I have no need for a flush to produce more than 15-20 wet grams ever.

You’re saying I can likely just case my grains without fiddling about with nutritive sub?

I mix my coir prior to pasteurizing, I want the beneficial bacteria to be present everywhere, just pulling shit out of my ass, but I can pasteurize a lot of substrate in my steamer.

I think it depends on the grain and likely species.  Brown rice, wheat, and corn all have good nitrogen.  Popcorn also holds a lot of water, and I haven't tried to top fruit other grains.

There might be others too that are high in nitrogen, as this information comes from human nutrition, so grains we don't typically consume I wasn't able to check.

And I was adding nitrogen and minerals to the casing (via a handful of worm castings per qt of dry peat).

You also certainly don't need a fancy setup.  As long as temperature is good.

The fruits are ugly and sparse because it's a late flush.  But this is a dubtub with water in the bottom.  I haven't tried bisporus on grain only.  Though I have ran them in AIO jars successfully.  But they would appreciate this fruiting setup more than cyans.

Also these are AIO.  I just wanted to show what's possible if you don't want to invest a lot in them.

11g wet and quite a bit more meaty than I typically get with automation.

Also this is the same cut as the ones above. So we can see how much difference conditions affect fruit morphology.

Low air flow and high humidity they gets tall. They probably assume they're in grass or something.

I’ve been growing them in dubbed water tubs pretty much exclusively. It’s really not hard to make coir with added LF, so I’ll just keep doing that. I usually just have more waste coir than I want after the fact, and it doesn’t keep.

Thanks for the info 👍

Even easier to use a nutritive sub and stop fiddling about with grain

I have hemp herd in the pastuerizer.  And spawned some India on it last week.

Figure I will get to Tractor Supply early fall, and grab some straw boss.
