For posterity,

The NOTM was never meant as a dunce cap and I really hope we don't make it feel that way. We honor our new members and we want them to feel it.

Many growers much better and skilled than I am have been elected.  Dkeppel was elected once, almost as a half joke knowing damn well he is the myco god of NZ. Kloakk, and Dv8 for example. Both well beyond my skill level, they were elected because we love them, and because they contribute a lot to our community. Headass is another one. That man SCHOOLS me on how to grow medicinals etc. Nokumana is now putting out better yeti's than I ever did, and off my plate!

NOTY/NOTM was always my way of showing appreciation for the new blood of our community.  It has nothing to do with how well you can grow a mushroom at all, and everything to do with how well the collective grows on you, rather. The point was always to let new growers know:

You're one of us. 

We all ended up here for similar reasons. This is a global community unlike any other that I am aware. We're something of a cult at this point. We believe in the power of our medicine and the good that it can do and thats really why we make more than just fleeting acquaintances in our community. The medicine connects us. Just like Myc! We are a family here, and the importance of what we do cannot be understated; new growers are the leading edge of our culture. They have the ambition and the frontier is theirs.  It is in our collective best interest to empower them.

Ill say firstly, it's good to see more newbs trickling in. Some of you are already journeymans and some of you are trying to hype yourself up enough to run your first batch of agar. Inspiring stuff.  Honestly the moment I don't know what im doing and start using the search function I feel like a newb all over again.


Whatever the intention of this thread it put vigor and life into my drive. A man with nothing ain't got nothing to lose but a man with mycology experiments has a lifetime of spore prints, clones, agar transfers and beautiful mushrooms.

Maybe your hand eye coordination isn't honed in, maybe your hands get shakers now... don't let that stop you. You've ridden this bike before, hell, you helped other people stabilize by holding onto the seat while they find their bearings.

You know the (mycelial) ropes, you can identify green...


Time away from the hobby builds up the novelty factor. Like time away from the induced psychedelic realm. So congrats bud, it may feel similar to the first time you cultivated

Why not just add the spores to the agar mix?

Screw it. Let’s just mix the spores, agar and grains for sterilization. You know how many steps we can eliminate!! Why the hell are we making this process so ridiculously long?
