Attempted making agar agar for the first time using 15g of King Arthur Wheat Flower, 5g of telephone brand agar and 235mg of distilled water. Ended up being completely opaque and disappointing, with clumping gel at the bottom before I even had the chance to sterilize it. Did I do something wrong or should I switch recipes???

(This is my first attempt at the whole process in general)

Is it solidifying?
Mine is pretty opaque.
If you followed the recipe to a T and made sure you boiled the agar for a few minutes to 'activiate' it's solidity I don't see any issues?

So far from what I know, no cubes “need” a casing layer but I have heard with PE and it’s close relatives can benefit from a “pseudo casing layer” to prevent blobs forming. I just got PE6 and PE7 in the mail yesterday so I’m curious what other people will say

Sorry but I’m confused. Do you WANT a flow hood or do you think you NEED a flow hood??

If someone has the money for a flow hood and really really wants one, I am definitely not the one to tell you what to do with your money you earned. I have shit from pre shroomery.org days I’m too much of a cheapskate to throw away just yet and all that jazz.

But you don’t NEED. a flow hood. I have never used one and have no intentions of using one. Many of the TCs don’t use them either. I have done multiple pours with agar and my plates come out clean with maybe losing 2 for every 100.

If you like no pours cause it’s what you like doing then I aint gonna stop you there either homie. Do what you’re comfortable with that works consistently. I’m going to be on the Instapot and no millet prep kick for along while. lol.

Just don’t let that scare you from doing pour agar work is all

I am using some general recipe from this thread

It mentions using 0-8% starch, and around 2% agar,

So I used 15g of wheat flower for the starch, and 5g of agar agar and distilled water for the rest.

I weighed out the powders, put em in a jar with water shook it, boiled the water in the microwave shook it again and it was super weird looking, and had some gel solidifying on the bottom. I spent like 15 minutes cleaning it out :frown:

Cubes don’t need a casing layer. But pseduo helps with moisture, surface conditions etc

(Below not if shoebox grows. Disregard. 😝 )

The Stipe Top Psuedo casing layer Tek was created by a combination of Stipe taking one of PastyWhyte’s theories on preventing blobs from PE and its variations from blobing.

The end result was at minimal an 1.5” inch layer pseudo casing applied at sending to bulk. Use a 1-3 ratio to mix, and with the thick pseudo layer you’ll be at a 1-4 or 1-5 ratio. Clean spawn needed and not recommended with questionable spawn.

As far as casing layers specific applications. Hopefully the resident amphibian appears.

i just own a pre-made humble SAB, pretty similiar to this one here

i thought i could trust bought LC, it seemed like a reliable source.

i had my first monos run harvesting only huge side pins, than i dialed surface conditions better and i had surfaces full of pins , than fruits, so for me it was good. Just started testing my LCs on my agar plates , should have done that before. thank you

So I’m going to say some stuff.

And keep in mind, I’m saying this from a place of love. And it really is a place of love cause I made the EXACT mistake I’m about to point out.

Take that SAB, cut it, burn it, and yeet it the fuck off this planet. lol.

I literally had the same one. So again, this is from a place of love bruv.

Those sleeves create a piston effect that will make contamination way way worse and literally destroys what a SAB is designed to do.

Just get a cheap plastic 110qt clear tote. Put it on a counter and mark where your arms are comfortably spaced. Drill 5” holes and that’s all. Wipe down with iso once your stuff is staged. Let sit for a good 20 minutes and work.

I had random crap issues with random transfers with that box and got wise hanging out here.

And yeah, LC are just a crap shot. Some of our vendors are good. If I’m froggy I’ll put some to agar and inoc the rest to grains. But if the LC is dirty I have agar to clean up if that makes sense.

Again, out of love homie. I was literally where you were once.

Yeah. You can use straight coir.

Eh. Blobing not really. You can eat em still. It’s just a mutation. The thick layers seems to be the only thing on shroomery that works.

I pour mine straight into plates and then it hardens in minutes.
Leave it over night and if its solid in the morning it's probably good.
You could always just make more and make sure you follow the exact recipe and instructions and you should be good bro.

really, thank you, i had that concern deep in my mind since a week or so, i'll fix that asap

last question for tonight: if i harvested around 5 oz dry per monotub (3-4 flushes, 4 quart spawn) using non clean LC (i was lucky)



and now i clone to agar, clean the myc and start over with proper clean spawn, i should get way more right? also, when i had trich it was most likely caused by the spawn?

that's something, congrats. i would have waited, if you cut as the veil breaks you get the highest concentration of psilocybin
if i'm not wrong waiting will give you around 2x weight and 20-30% less potency, so still a win for me

Take your wheat flour, pour it into room temp water,
short boil (on the stove i prefer) then let simmer few minutes, strain through cheese cloth (or similar),
or let the solids settle down, then pour off and use the liquid.
Add agar, stir up and pc.
With that flour i´d pc ~40 minutes.

Better use light malt extract my friend.
Way easier :wink:
