Has anyone ever tried using a grain jar lid for fermentation? I doubt a sfd will let enough gas out but you never know

It would ferment fine, just hella carbonated. I don't think it would explode though. Remember that SFD is a two way air flow and fermentation is almost always done one way.

I bet it would work pretty decent for bacterial fermentation, like pickles and sauerkraut. Traditionally was done in open air, just under the liquid level. Just a thought.

Yeah. My enemy is acetobacter when I ferment and it's prolly what you would be using in that situation.

For lactofermentation, at least, those silicone flat lids (they go on with a regular jar ring) with a pinhole or two are great airlocks. They bulge a bit but don't explode, letting enough air out for safety without letting any back in, ensuring that the fermentation remains anaerobic. For lactofermentation you don't want two-way gas exchange.

No idea whether that setup would be suitable for other kinds of fermentation.

Yes.

I have read of some cases where certain wells cause issues but largely no ussue.

Im making cider. I have cheesecloth to use, just had to take a ring from some grain jars and the question popped in my head

For sure
That's basically what I already do but with the trivet not raised at all. I definitely have to raise the trivet to the three court line and then add the extra water half way up the jars if i wanna do 3+ hours. And then do less jars.

I guess it would be worth it if I still end up with more grain than I would if I did 10qt jars like usual.  Ill have to crunch the numbers and see.

Why so much water? What kind of PC do you have?

I routinely do 3-1/2 to 4 hour runs on 3 quarts of water.

What PSI are you running? 4 quarts had maybe 200ml left after 1 hour 20 minutes going in between 15-16 PSI in a 24 quart pressure cooker for me.

Bags will process more grain per cycle than any number of jars...

:hewut:

I put 3 qt in my presto and after 15 minutes of venting and 2 hours and 30 minutes cycle around 17-18 PSI I might loose up to 1/2 qt, half of it probably during venting.

I think some people might be afraid of the cost of impulse sealers. That's what keeps me from trying to make bags however I found this https://shroomsupply.com/lab-supplies/mushroom-bag-clamp with that you can use agar on bags and wouldn't need the sealer.

17 psi in my Presto, 15 psi in my T-Fal. If you’re using that much water during your PC run you’re running it a little hot. You don’t want a loud, spitting, hissing, rocking weight or relief valve. Dial back the heat just a little bit and maintain pressure without losing all that steam.

My impulse sealer broke. Now I use clips or tape. 1” binder clips are my favorite.

i think it could
work with a big enough jar if you only fill
halfway.  it could bubble up and get the filter wet and ruin it.  othet than that i dont see why it wouldnt work but it might actuallly let too much gass out.

this is a kloakk question.
