It's been a while since my last adventure with true sclerotia formers, but here we are.

Jar finished colonizing only a couple of days ago.

Love it when they still look like stones and not like green-blue Martian genitalia mixed with barf.

Found a forgotten jar of subtropicalis grain mixed into what I think is composted cow manure and coir. Would these stones be safe to eat after brushing? Tea? Feel like it’s a bad idea to eat stones that have been in poo but don’t want to fruit them and don’t wanna throw the stones away if it’s not very risky. At the same time I don’t really desire getting ebola 😂

I think you’re safe. If you had Ebola in your grow in your house you’d have been sick long ago…lol Clean them up, dehydrate, consume. Rinse them off if you’re really worried. Make tea if you’re super concerned, the boiling water will kill most things. Think of how many fruits and veggies are grown in poo, especially mushrooms right here in the forum. 😉

Except that subtrops don't form stones so make sure that you have what you think you have. If it was just a mix up of names and you do have stones, give them a brushing and rinse and make a tea by boiling them in water and you should be good.

If it really is myceliated grain from subropicalis, I would not eat poo grain. The difference is that stones form and grow outward like a fruit or vegetable (think of a carrot or potato). Myceliated grain is really a network of colonized spawn and substrate, if a substrate is used. So with the stone, you are only eating the flesh on the "fruited body" but with myceliated grain you are eating the network and everything that it has not digested and converted. Ick. :puke:

Does anybody know what specifically causes the sour/metallic aftertaste for sclerotia? Does it have any correlation with potency? (I tried searching but didn't find anything.)

I never had any that tasted metallic to me, but they were definitely tart. Iove the taste of stones, and the smell of the spawn.

I've seen other people describe it as metallic. The taste is definitely sour/tart, but seems more chemical than metallic to me -- like ascorbic acid compared to lemon juice, perhaps? It wasn't unpleasant, at least not in small quantities, but it's an unusual taste and I wonder if anybody knows more about it. In particular, it'd be good to know if a stronger sour taste correlates with more potency, or if it's unrelated.

So this is kind of weird.  I thought I was growing the elusive India Woodlover, aka Ps. Wayanadensis, but it seems I may have injected the wrong mycelium into a bag of wood chips.  The weird thing is that it appears to be Tampanensis!...growing on wood chips?!

I apologize of this should be in its own ID thread but I think its noteworthy that its growing on wood chips if it is indeed tamps.

Is this not Tampanensis?  I suppose I will know eventually when I find out if there are stones in the sub but I want to see how long it fruits for:

I’m retiring a shoebox of ATL7. Is there an easier way to harvest the stones than picking them out by hand?

My pleasure.

It is not often that I am capable of a short answer. Finally do it and it is not the qq/qa thread, of course.  Tell them I tried.

This looks like Tamps to me. Keep in mind I've never seen Waya, it's possible they look similar, but congrats either way! I love to see someone grow Tamps so big and healthy, and Waya would have been an even greater achievement!

Does the mycelium smell a lot like cucumber/watermelon? If so it's 99% Tamps.

I forgot to mention that YES they smell like Tamps.  That was the first thing that made me go hmmm… I was like… either Ps Wayanadensis smells just like tamps or….  And I was trying to grow either Pollock or Tamp x ATL 7 at the time so its entirely possible that there was a mix up… or the IWL failed and there were tamp spores that got it in and grew….

Next step is a Q test to make sure they’re active so I don’t die trying to find out. Lol.  I heard Gallerina tastes like cucumber too!
