Quick Coconut coir question - I see everyone on here using bricks of coir. Besides price, is there any reason to use compressed coir over loose coir? Just wondering if the loose stuff is more prone to contamination or something...

(The hydroponics guy says it's exactly the same product, just loose)

Cheers

I believe it is the same, the bricks are just more manageable for the volume used

Real estate is $
Loose coir takes up way more space and isnt really baught in bulk

Sweet, thanks! It will be much easier than chipping up blocks with a screwdriver every time I make up a ziploc or two

bro, no, just hydrate the whole block then use what you need. then you can use the rest later.

but yes, loose would still be easier </font>

Thoughts on blue honey? I’ve read mixed reviews and was wanting to give it a go with all my aging fruits because, ya know, why not. :mariopeace:

Thoughts on casing APE? I just spawned 2 separate quarts of APE to straight coir in two shoebox totes at 1:2 ratio. I mixed it, tamped it tight and didn’t case it. When I joined, the first post I made someone said to case APE after a week with a half inch of pasteurized peat. Thoughts?

Man... I hope these aren't all aborts. Those are some promising clusters. I think I may have not misted the cakes enough. I was seeing split caps so I dialed back a bit, thinking the misting was causing it. Tonight, I ramped up the direct misting to try to hydrate the cake a bit and (maybe) save these pins.

What do you think? Aborts?

I've always used loose coir just because I have a lot from my gardening. It works fine. The same proportion as the bricks. There have been comments on here in the past that some brand of bricks has been problematic, I don't remember the brand now.

If you're having issues or want to give your cakes a decent watering while they're fruiting try bottom watering. Set them inside of a plastic lid flipped over or a metal lid and ring with some foil in it making kind of a dish. And pour a little bit of water in it and let the bottom of the cakes suck it up and get the water it needs.

Bottom watering tek

A lot of us do it around here it's a good way to keep your cakes and tubs getting the sufficient water they need without worrying about too much or too little about misting.

After a day if there's still water left and it all hasn't been sucked up you can dump it out or let it go another day as long as it doesn't become stagnant.

You could also do this with shoe boxes and tubs as long as you're not using a liner. If they start to shrink and pull away from the sides and you've got gaps. You can pour some water down the sides.
