But you weren't processing that into confectionery, maintaining a commercial kitchen, getting tailor-made packaging, or hiring drivers to do deliveries, right?

No doubt, it's a cash cow, but there are a lot of costs to consider nonetheless.

Also, I assume by that math that you're doing something else to keep a roof over your head, so you're not factoring in rent, utilities, etc. Lots of different ways to calculate expenses versus income, as any restaurant in a sales slump or hedge fund manager can tell you...

So, for all we know, it ends up being more of a cash goat.

Price is really what you’re willing to pay at the end of the day.  Most people don’t hear about them unless they know someone that makes em.  My favorite part of giving them to people is the look on their face. Then they’re like “wow these taste great” then a hour later I’m their new favorite person.

The price would also vary depending on how strong you make them.

If you have fruits make some gummies.

Chocolate is a whole other story. I gotta learn to temper before I even think of doing that. I’m probably more in the realm of go to the hobby store and get the colored melting disks that are vanilla flavored and go from there!

But yes, look at the prices of those shroom retreats in Jamaica. Big $. Those aren’t in my budget. But fuck, the experience sounds pretty wild. I’m destined for Negril. It’s in my budget, and I enjoy the ride with a red stripe or two and a pattie along the way. Probably a bottle of Ting as well.

One pouch makes about 48 gummies for me, so I just do a double extract of 48 grams and reduce that all down and mix it with the packaged stuff. Works great, and I don't use my dehydrator - I just leave them in the fridge until  they firm up a bit.

  • I think you meant Milkboy rather than mushboy for the simple gummy recipe. Mush is a tea connoisseur if I am not mistaken. But based on Milk's recipe, I think this would work well.

  • I agree that agar agar gummies kind of suck, though. The texture is all wrong. They dry out and get hard after a while. And a little agar is fine to consume, but a lot will give you bubble guts and the runs. It is known as a natural laxative. No need to add any stomach distress to mushrooms, they already do that well enough on their own for many people.

  • Their package says 3 grams total psilocybin or 0.5 grams per gummy. I am pretty sure that they mean grams of dried mushrooms, not psilocybin. 0.5 grams of psilocybin is approximately the amount in 50 grams of dried cubensis. Probably simpler for most people to calculate in dried mushroom equivalent so I see why they list it that way. But it is going to be pretty confusing in the long run when they list the actives incorrectly like that. If they are not being accurate about that, what else are they playing fast and loose with?

@AZ Did you try them or know anyone that did? I am curious about the texture, taste, and if the potency felt right. I am sure I would have paid the premium just for the sake science.

I am not surprised that they don't use any preservatives, though. Most people will eat them right away while on vacation. No FDA to worry about. More return customers if they don't last long. It really is less profitable to make them last when you can just make and sell more for very low expense at high prices.

Still pretty cool. Might need a little Jamaican vacation, mon.

So no I didn’t try them. I thought $65 or even $30 was a bit high especially since I had brought my own capsules that I made. I think I brought like 38g in 1/4g caps. We had almost all and left about 3g with our friends for their last night. Ain’t chancing bringing any home. And yes, I agree the weight is probably referring to the amount of dried shrooms. Extract from 24g of dried, make 48 gummies from the extract and you have .5g gummies. No different than anyone here is calculating stuff. I’m also wondering what that shelf life would be for those packages? I think the chocolate might have a longer shelf life than gummies. If you look at the ingredients of Haribo bears, citric acid has to be the preservative. Those things last a while!

typical restaurant upcharge is 3x cost to cover all of the above.  these folks are looking at probably 100x+ profit margin and without the costs associated with hosting customers for a meal.  good on them, and I'll never fault anyone making honest money.  there's no victim in that business model, and thats a market to envy.  we'd all gladly send planes full of mushrooms down there for half that margin.

In places where 'shrooms have been sold retail in developed countries, the going price for dried fruit seems to be from $10-$15 a gram both street and the shops. Or, at least the few articles I am willing to grant any authority to claim. Given those sales are usually taxed and taxed hard, the fact that street and shops sell for about the same amount, that is probably the max. that can expected. It also means that in a country like Jamaica, the cost would be lower.

Even so, a decent baseline, I think.

From ReverendMyc's posts, I gather 500 grams of myceliated grain would yield ~100 gummies at a strength that he has measured that should be at worst half of the gummies in Jamaica. Probably closer to equal, but WTH. ReverendMyc's results are notable because with his process using Ps. sub. on quinoa, you get about the same amount of actives from just the mycelia as you would get if you fruit that grain instead of processing the grain.

TLDR; cost to make 100 gummies like the Jamaican ones would take fruiting 0.8kg to 1.5kg of dry grain and processing to gummies as a rough guide. The processing doesn't seem involved, but it is going to take a few hours. Attach whatever numbers seem reasonable to those factors and you get a cost. The street value of 'shrooms is going to set an upper limit on how much you can get, depending on what kind of premium you can get for gummies over the dried product. Based on 0.5 grams of dried product per gummy according to the label, that puts it at $5 to $10 for the same amount of dried product. I dunno, the price doesn't seem out of line from where 'shrooms are or have been legal in recent years in developed countries.

As far as being sold where you live, well...

A new street drug pops up and is clearly aimed at kids. I can't think of anything that would get a grip on the attention of the local yokels more than that...

In Canada you can have them mailed to your door for $80 an oz through grey market weed sites. I can't imagine what they're paying wholesale.

which is why anyone with any sense will never open a restaurant. Product that goes bad over a very short period of time combined with an atrocious profit margin, large physical overhead costs, and hot, hard, rushed work and employees who are all using and underpaid. It's a fools errand.

Retailing is another issue. In my state, they are hellbent on making THC products illegal. The justification is the edibles are often sweetened and, as such, obviously aimed at kids. If I had to choose between being caught with a bottle of capsules and a bag of gummies, I'll take door number 1, please.

We aren't seeing a lot of rational thought out there.

I think the solution is for the community to decide on a color, blue, black or whatever, and any dosed edibles be colored that way. So anything edible, capsule, gummy, cookie, goo balls, etc. that are that particular shade of whatever can be assumed to be psychoactive. I am not sure if that is a great defense, but it should be better than nothing.
