Some plate pin transfers from the three wild Aussie cubes I have so far.

Nice, were the previous plates looking nearly as good in terms of rhizo?

I'm on T3s but still finding the growth to be lackluster. But, I suppose they will be restarted as soon as I get some fruits. First grains jars were made a few days ago

No, these are definitely the stars. The ones before were average and uneven and I just got a little lazy and let them sit until they pinned after some transfers to pf-ish jars.

These will go to grains, so far everything else has gone to modified pf jars. I top fruit pf recipe in 1/4 pint jars for lots of sketchy tests to get something to clone or print. That way I don't spend a lot of resources or space on unknown quantities. I got tired of the heartbreak from semps when I started with them. So many failed tubs before I learned what they want. Now it is all low commitment mini grows until I have something worth pursuing.

^ I feel ya! I've just corrected by biggest mistake, which was using too much of a plate that seemed good. Just completely ignored that

PF Teks and Pucks are perfect for testing quickly. Just made some cakes to try my first cross attempt on as a LI, after I archive it.

The grain jars I made with the Australians will be shoeboxes or fathlocks to minimize contams and maximize separate grows to hunt for phenos.

:takingnotes: I hope you don't mind if I steal this idea for testing new species when I get to 'em, it's just too brilliant to pass up

ANYWAY I was here for a small update of my own! Tico bags seem to be doing alright, all things considered. About a day or two shy from taking over the whole sub. Both look about the same, so just one is pictured.

Interestingly enough, I dropped the swab I used for my germ plates into a puck, and we've got a pin or two. Very light-colored, if not leucistic, to my untrained eyes. :takingnotes:(sorry for the awful visibility. My puck jars are repurposed and ofc the one that gets smthg interesting is the one that had an almost impossible to remove label) There are other knots, but curiously the only pins so far are the ones pictured, one of which is easy-ish to see on the pic.

It does look luecistic, that would be a new development, I have only had normal looking cubes from all of the tubs I've grown. I'd be interested in seeing those once they mature.

The original find fruit was pretty light colored and I haven't had any grow this light or albino so that's super cool.

Slippery Cross moving pretty fast. One of the pf tek-ish jars got away from me while I was away for a few days.

Stoker also doing things.

Burringbar bringing up the rear, but got pins.

Selected a couple of the pretty ones for clones.

Nice! Did you colonize those with a wedge?

I have my first Australian jars colonizing, just spawned my first Taman Negara (Malaysia) fahtlock, and have more of those from a great plate on grains.

Taman Negara of agar

Got this plin of Sibu (Costa Rica), that looks interesting and perhaps worth cloning, mostly because of the gnarled pheno I can see a hint of.

Two tico jars are also ready for a shoebox as well!

That's a great thread. Wild cubes have always been my passion.

Thank you very much for sharing the information about growing them and making crosses.
I've tried a bunch of landrace genetics, and they have never disappointed me. They've all been special in some way.

My tub with the Vietnamese cubensis:

I had very mystical and lethargic trips every time I tried them.

Incredible looking stuff and thanks for joining!

Have you personally collected them, or got them from trusted foragers?

Any variety a bit more "special" than usual? Would you say the average wild cube is on par or more potent than the average standard commercial cube?

Any crosses you have tried yet?

Thank you!

I haven’t collected them myself, nor did I get them from trusted foragers. This cube is one I picked up from a vendor ages ago. But I reckon they’re Vietnamese cubes, and here’s why: they’ve been pretty lethargic and meditative, just like other South Asian shrooms I’ve tried, like Thai.

I’ve got a print from FNQ from a trusted forager and a print from NSW from a trusted forager too. I wonder if they’ll be different in any way.

And no, I’ve never tried any crosses. I’ve just been growing and printing, but I’d like to dip my toes in and try crossing something one day.
I think crossing a Florida cube with an Aussie cube would be interesting.

I’ve also got a Tosochatchee cube print, which they say is more potent than APE, so I’m absolutely stoked to try that too! This is a wild Florida cube I got from a vendor. I’m not sure if I can say the vendor's name here, but they said they foraged this variety too.

I’ll be printing them as well, so I’d be happy to share the prints for further work and crosses. I believe it’s gonna be some nice material.

Not sure if I had any Florida ones, but I did receive some Purple Mystic and that one is supposedly from a Florida wild thing in 2016, so hopefully that is the case.

So now I have: Florida, Australia x 5, Malaysia, Costa Rica x2

Gonna prioritize crossing based on geographic distance, although even Malaysia and Australia are likely to have quite different strains.

Would love to get some modern Brazilian ones and Ecuadorians. I do have a print of Ecuador, but I don't trust these legacy strains to be accurate since the study showed its all basically GT.

I was doing some research, and I discovered that no natives in the Americas have a history of cubensis, which basically guarantees that it is an invasive species that came with cattle via spores in the feed from where they came from.

I think South East Asia and India are the likely global origins at least in modern times. Maybe it was once in the Middle East before it got desertified around 6kish years ago. Would make sense considering the lack of ancestral presence in africa, but the close relationship to Ochra.

Been slow with cultivation, but I do have wild updates.

First of all, what I thought was Sibu (Costa Rican) is actually Taman Negara (Malaysia) and vice versa

Taman Negara, one of the prettiest cubes I've seen look at those chocolate cubes

A clone sample from it, with plins on the plin. The mycelium is actually darker and tinged brown. Do shroomies have melanin?

Not the best fahtlock (coir was too wet oops), but this is Tico (CR)

I have my first tubs of Wild Australians pining, and quite a few plins that might be worth cloning.

Nice cap to stem ratio on Chinderah

Already have a Murbah clone plin that was actually put straight to grain, and then g2ged. I like the rhizo by the stem. Bit too standard cube for early cloning though

This burringbar has an interesting cap color, it is also slightly transparent, but maybe just as a plin?

What are y'all updates? I've been starting to use straw, and some of these wild australians have been spawned to straw tubs. Hopefully won't be an issue.

I did receive some Purple Mystic on agar, which is verified Florida but an old one. Still, should be a good candidate for crossing since each verified landrace should contain significantly different genes.

i’ve been running some wild australian genetics so figured i’d drop in here!! love the idea of a dedicated thread for wild genes & have been super interested in the health of our cultures lately. the study on australian cubes was super interesting & is definitely great encouragement to keep our gene pools diverse!!

been running “burringbar” & “sharps crossing” spores

some pics of the tubs… all on straw with coir or peat top layers!! i cabin sequestered all these cultures which might explain why they flushed so clone-like, otherwise i got very lucky with my cultures

i’ve got a ton of prints, been meaning to do a giveaway but haven’t had time to put aside for it yet. i’ll do one soon tho (anyone in this thread feel free to PM me, i can def get a letter or two out here & there… ;D)

hazyhorse, is is Slippery Crossing or Sharps Crossing? That was the only one I didn't get clean but 5 others is more than enough. Beautiful stuff, I have a burringbar plin clone that I think will be a good sample.

Does the coir casing help with more hidration and pinsets? That is something I feel is maybe missing with straw so far.

Here is Wild Australian Chinderah (WA Chinderah , or WAUS Chinderah?) on pure straw with straw casing.  And a 1st generation spore print of this landrace variety, darkest I've seen in a while. Only 24 hours I think or less.

I've got a "Grafton" MS on a plate at the moment, happy to share spores from that if I can fruit it.

Otherwise there's always more when it warms up.

Nice one! That’s only a couple hours south of me, be nice to see if there’s much difference pheno wise (:

Scored some wild Tennessee farm spores or “WTF” curtesy of Ladysknight, 2 tubs spawned at the same time, 1 straw/cv and another cv, cv hasn’t even pinned yet while the straw fruited and instantly contaminated, still some damn purdy fruits (:

Not going to share spores from this tub but hopefully the next one will be clean enough to share from 👍

Nice! Been slow on cult, haven't been documenting much. Also I've been experimenting with straw so that has perhaps introduced a lot of variables. Been getting quite a lot of prints though!

Wild Australians (WA) that have grown so far are Chinderah and Burringbar. Burringbar has had nice pale caps, and I got some fully solid stems that bruised nicely (it had a nice cap as well!) so that got cloned.

Now, WA Eungella, only one my jars made it, I did a little tray. It seems to have leucistic variants in it! It is possible that I mislabeled, but I don't think so. As you can see, it is outputting some standard caps as well. The darkness came from the plastic bag contact, I have moved it to a container now.

My messy Tico bag is still outputting fruits. Very yellow caps, very standard look, although some have been nipply which is nice.

Here are some plins on agar of WA Eungella, unless I did get it confused with Gemini or something. I have a ridiculous amounts of plates that have been somewhat neglected.

Now that I have multiple prints, I should start crossing them together. Taman Negara seems to be a great candidate since it has a very distinct look that facilitates visual IDing. Plus, cattle that came to Australia was not from Malaysia. From the research I did, it seems like it was Indian cattle, so that would be the origin point of those genetics.

Haven't had look with Sibu (another Costa Rican), but I need to work on that a bit more. Sucks that it seems that I mislabeled my original Sibu/T. Negara plates so IDK exactly which is which, although T. Neg gets quite easy to identify on agar since it darkens it.

I do have a wedge of purple mystics (from Florida, although a long time ago) that I have been lazy. To many interesting things to work on.

huskies!! im so sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to this thread, idk how i missed these posts.

it’s sharps crossing!! i have a swab of slippery i believe but i didn’t germ it yet, only the bbar & sharps. burringbar did amazing from MS, fingers crossed for your plin!!

i still need to run more tubs to really dial in the straw but i do feel like having a coir/peat top layer makes for much better pin sets in general. the pure straw tubs/bags i’ve run fruit fine but yeah the pin sets just feel like they could be better. i ran into some bad contam this last round of clone attempts so im gonna drop the peat top layer for a bit while im troubleshooting that, but i generally prefer a top layer if i can manage it

also those dark capped mushrooms in your last post are insanely beautiful!!

also also, big hats off to everyone else in the thread, really beautiful stuff. can’t wait to see more updates!!
