New Cubensis Strains? More like Vendor hype!
    #1640839 -

For a long time vendors have been 'domesticating' wild specimens of cubensis from any exotic area they can find purely to try and capitalise on it. The whole point of developing a good, properly domesticated variety of cubensis would be due to its high yielding/fruiting performance or perhaps an oddity of its genetics that is fairly stable that would make it unique in potency, etc.
The concept of one man going to a small island in thailand and picking seven cubensis specimens from areas within a 50km radius, bringing them back to USA and having someone isolate them once or twice, posting a picture of one of the isolates that manage to fruit in a unique way, printing this and then marketing it as an excitng new 'strain' of cubensis is misleading and redudant. Or capitalism at its worst.
Cubensis like Treasure Coast, PRs, many of the thai spore-races, some of those from Australia (i like the tassie though but there is no way cubensis was found in tasmania!!!) are just average wild cubensis mushrooms being sold with poorly domesticated variable genetics. Basing their relevance as a distinct strain purely on the location of the origin mushroom. And capitalising on the wide variety of genetic throwbacks - such as TC's albino freaks as something other than what they really represent - poor selection and domestication.
If the principle being used is correct, i could go out into the Australian country side and find four cubensis fruits in four different paddocks, isolate them a little, get a few weird fruiting characteristics that i take a picture of, then sell them as four different cubensis strains. Now that is bordering on nasty!
The best example of this came from Captain Max who actually had the guile to receive a bunch of wild prints from Australia and actually use these to make syringes - the Wollongong variety was on the market no longer than two weeks after he received the original prints.
Reputable vendors are few and far between.

I have to agree. There are many people taking credit for "discovering" strains without basis. Finding a common strain in an uncommon setting does not make a strain unique.

I've never seen a Gulf Coast grow in my yard, but then one year, there it was. I'll call it the Ainasko strain.

Also, there seems to be a trend of people taking common procedures and naming the tek after themselves. I guess everyone wants to be famous.

Nobody forces you to buy new strains. If you are pleased with the strain(s) you already have, then stay with them, why should you bother acquiring new ones.
It?s about choice and diversity, this is what makes this hobby fun.

The malabar pics on the sporebank website ARE malabars. Malabars have a tendency to grow to full maturity without their veils breaking. What you are seeing in those pics are mushrooms at full maturity when their caps are starting to upturn, but their veil is still attached. That is what makes them so unnusual looking. Unfortunately, veils staying attached that long is uncommon, and it is unlikely that yours will do the same. However, malabars are the only cubies that I know of that will do that at all. So if you want shrooms that look like those pics, then you will have to keep growing malabars.

Blue meanie, are you criticising, John Allen? Aren't his Thai strains pretty well accepted? I think he even has all kinds of pics and info on his mushroom hunting adventures in Thailand and Austrailia. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

You are not wrong at all. A few people have enjoyed his strains. I would also like to add, if an implication is being made, I personally have never seen MJ ever push for anyone to buy anything from him. So I wouldn't call it "vendor" hype on his behalf. I wouldn't consider him a run o' the mill vendor, If a vendor at all.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
