I’ve been waiting for the entire plate to be covered. Am I waiting too long to send to grain?

You can send a tiny wedge to grain if you want, it just takes a few extra days if you give it a shake after it grows out a few centimeters.

I used to let them grow out until there was a small gap (~1-2cm) between the leading edge of the myc and the rim of the plate. I don't like to use myc from the very edge due to increased risk of comtams.

However, now I just take about 1 to 2 cm strip from the leading edge when it looks like strong regular growth. Someone here put the idea in my head that using the older growth and the transfer piece was less desirable. So far I have not regretted the change. Might not be strictly necessary, but I like the vigor as the new growth takes off on the grains.

I definitely do not let the whole plate grow out. Over grown plates are harder to read if something evil found its way in.

Aye! So last week and this week I put 1/2 and full plates into quart grain jars. I rotated and then rolled them to distribute the wedges throughout the jars. Being new to the agar thing I didn’t know to just use a piece. However I have beautiful myc growing now in each of the jars I inoculated with the agar.

its only an issue if the agar isnt clean. your plates looked dope.

but yeah, smaller wedges. moving towards that myself, i think its been a major oversight on my end.

You got that right. Cutting out tiny bits is far trickier than I would have guessed. But I have shaky hands from nerve damage, that makes all sterile work harder.

pretend you are playing tic tac toe and take the center little square.

you can see the cuts and where i took numerous transfers from the same 'tac toe'

I've found that with the zit popping tools, its pretty easy to use the thin hoops and make a lil horizontal hotdog, if that makes any sense. You get a perfect lil tube.

This is a matter of mastering self control for me. Sure, I can send a wedge the size of an a2a transfer to my grain jar, but I could have spawn sooner if I sent the whole plate and then I have one less plate to decide what to do with later. And plate clutter is about the only thing that stresses me out about cult anymore, so it kinda feels like 2 birds with one stone to send the whole plate. 🤣

Kinda like Rev’s avatar!

Everyone brings up good points and good info. I guess as long as the plate looks good, you can send a piece or up to the entire plate. I do agree with Thurm that send an entire plate to a jar or two, does take the plate out of the plate collection. I can see and learned quickly that plate can pile up fast. Right now I feel like a crazy cat lady with as many plates as a CCL feeds cats in her back yard.

just want to show off my lovely looking T1 Semps, all from same germ plate

the germ plate they came from (which I cut up and put to 4 grain jars on 4/20, left out the area around 1 o'clock)

All this talk about the zip popping tools - I wanted to add my 2 cents..

I love the little pointed hook for getting *many* wedges out of plates after "tic-tac-toe'ing" a plate (not for a single transfer). Mostly for tiger dropping a2g or LI (agar to distilled water).

  • I use the flat part of the hook to ensure the cuts are clean (to separate the wedges) pressing the flat edge down along the cuts.
  • Then twist the point under the wedge and lift it out.
  • You can then angle the wedge so its not sticking to the plate resting it however you like then stab the side of the wedge to lift it out.

It's so clean / satisfying.. The weight of the wedge is often enough to remove itself from the point when you twist the point to face down (you can give it a light flick of the wrist if needed) or you can lightly touch the edge of wedge to the edge of whatever you're transferring into to dislodge it from the point into the jar/bottle you're transferring to.

Here is a video of me doing a LI transfer.

Thank you for attending my TED talk

edit: cropped and uploaded the image so its not so huuuge

oooh, that's a smooth technique. I steam sterilize all of them in pouches and end up using one side per plate.

Are you using just one and flame sterilizing it? I figure that since I can use sterilized ones, I might as well. But some sides are obviously more convenient than others.
