Running the same PE I’ve been running this year. This time due to the cold weather, RH in the room was pretty low. My surface area still looks pretty good but I’m getting yellow knotting on all my bags. Wondering if that is normal?

My grow space is 14-20 Celsius year round. If I need warmer temperatures I put a tub(s) inside a larger tub. The growing mycelium generates heat warming the setup a bit. Just need to adjust the tub ventilation.

I've had some time to think about what might be going wrong with my process thanks to the knowledgeable people here. I've been doing fooman prep for my WBS, except I've been letting it air dry before loading it up and PCing instead of just draining for 30 min and loading it up wet. How critical is it to load up wet? Can this be where I'm going wrong? Perhaps I had just been getting lucky with the bag of grains I had and when I got a new bag, with a different batch of grains, my luck had ran out.

I had been told in the past it's very hard for grain to be TOO dry, but maybe that's not the case.

When I do Foo, I leave mine to drip on a large strainer for 2hrs. At the hour mark I shake them a bit. But they are plenty moist when I load into jars.
If they are too wet, they tend to clump into a puck on the bottom of the jar. This is always an indication that the simmer was too long or the drying process was insufficient.
In my case tho, neither too wet nor too dry cause contams.
I'd try a different brand, your methods seem good.

I put my wet grains on a beach towel before they go on screens. If I go straight to screens, water pools up in the center and it takes forever to dry.

It may be less of a problem if you dry your grains in a thin layer. Mine are always a bit thick in the space I have.

Hi everyone,
after passing half an hour looking for answers without success, I came here. I'm sure it was already answered somewhere, and I'm sorry for that.

>> How the same mycelium, which is genetically the same, can grow sporophores with different phenotypes ? aren't they 'clones' ?

If you already know a thread with the answer, please enlight me .
Thanks a lot !

I would suggest that you wait for someone with a bit more knowledge than me, but the way I understand it is that we use the term clone but it's more of a misnomer. It's not like cloning a plant. The mushroom we take a clone from has genetics from multiple spores within it. I believe the only way to get a consistent phenotype is to work with a monoculture which pretty much requires a microscope to develop

Here is the Advanced Mycology forum, lots of advanced knowledge there to search and read through. I try to push myself to read stuff that's over my head, and that's a good place for it.

Im prepping my wbs. Like 20% of the grains are popped but if i cut some of them in half theres still starchy whiteness in a lot of them.

Shit is fucked

Load it wet and it will hydrate in the PC cycle

Yea ive tried that. I still get contam right at pins. Been having the problem for years im trying something different, trying to make sure no grain has starchy whiteness inside, but this probably wont work either. Always the same trich. I dont even know what other contam looks like. I never seen any sign of contam until time for pins. Not on agar and not in spawn. Heres the latest victim spawned at 1:2. It just about barely outran the trich this time but not quite. Trich will catch up and turn stems to mush before they fully grow.

Should have been a nice flush. I feel like it must be my grain prep. Ive tried like every wbs tek on here with always the same results. Wbs is the only grain i can get besides popcorn.

Ive tried all different combos and types of lids and filters and they all probably work because the result is always the same lol. Something goes wrong somewhere but for the life of me i can not figure it out.

Im going to run some cultures of this batch of burst wbs just because i have not yet done so. Will return in few months to either gloat or seppuku

I've always been a fan of a 24 hour hot soak for WBS

How are your cultures looking that youre noc'in with?

You gotta have really really bad grain for it to be the grain prep. If it’s persisted this long I’m confident you would have figured out the right grain prep. I think there’s more ways to make sterile grain than not, so I doubt that’s it

It's not your grain prep. Molds don't survive the PC cycle they don't even survive pasteurizing.
Make grain leave one not inoculated
Fake spawn a tub of coir with no spawn just hydrated coir
Chances are neither of these go wrong

It doesn't matter what i think of you...all that matters is clean spawn

I do this too, though only 12hr soak, boiling water in a bucket and leave overnight.
