"Properly Vented" "Make sure you Vent your PC"

As someone probably a week or so away from his first PC Cycle, I could use some clarification this subject. I see it a lot but I'm not sure I've ever read details.

I understand that the intention is to keep the PC at a set psi for a set time, but venting would lower the psi, wouldn't it?

so.. why? when? how many times?

Just to add, don’t start the timer for your vent cycle until the safety lock pops up on your lid.

It usually take 15-20 minutes for that to happen for me, and then you set a 10-15 minute timer, put your weight on.

I put the weight on to help the lock in popping up. It happens much easier that way. Then I remove the weight and start the timer for the venting.

You 'vent' the PC by leaving the pressure regulator off while the PC comes up to temp, and until the only thing being expelled from the pressure relief vent is steam.

The goal is to remove all the air in the PC and replace it with steam before sealing the PC and increasing the pressure. Any air left in the PC will dramatically lower the temperature even at high psi, leading to incomplete sterilization.

Common recommendation is to leave the cap off for ~10 minutes at the beginning, but it sometimes takes mine 20ish minutes to completely vent all the air and only produce steam.

This is the first I'm seeing of waiting until you only see steam... That makes sense, but I thought I was doing it correctly by just setting a timer after seeing steam. Is everyone waiting for all steam?

Your bag was extremely bacterial. That gel is bacteria.

I send that at a 1:1 ratio of spawn to substrate and cross every finger and toe you can cross. Expect contamination but hope for mushrooms because it’s not impossible that you could still get some.

How do you mean?    It's already spawn and substrate together since it's an all in one bag. So are you saying just break it all up into a tub and cross my fingers? Or I need to break it up into a tub and add some more substrate?  Am I a fool for even trying at this point? Or should I toss it and just spend my time learning the pf tek  before anything.i mean at this point it's all experimental.

Oh it has substrate. I assumed it didn’t because I thought from the chunk you had in your hand you’d already broken it up.

If you want to try fruiting it, try fruiting it. If a jar I made in house looked like that I would throw it out without hesitation, BUT it would be one of many jars and the loss wouldn’t be felt.

It’s contaminated. It will probably fail, but we’ve all seen contaminated spawn throw out a few mushrooms. The only thing you have to lose by waiting to see if it fruits is something you were going to throw away anyway.

Definitely start PF tek if that’s your next step. Always start working on the next project

Awesome thank you so much for the advice I'm going to toss it out. Do I just throw it in the trash ?or should I take it and bury it in the garden? Does it matter? Are there benefits to putting in the garden?

If you have a place to bury it then do that. Lots of bacterial spawn can have a second life outside and may even eventually fruit.

How do i have 15k posts and not know what coir is? Fair question honestly. That's actually an interesting story sort of. Firstly when I registered no company would sell LCs to California so for a majority of that time I just thought I'd never be able to grow :frown:. Plus I was younger and had access to many shroom dealers.

I started here because I found mushrooms near me house, I picked about 10lbs of it and was "drying it" under a ceiling fan. I had been posting on the shroomery about other psychedelic adventures and alot of pill based posts. And someone here saved my life told me that 10lbs of mushrooms I picked was extremely poisonous. I instantly recognized the value of this site as a resource for unintended harm reduction.

Just about a month ago I checked more sites and sponsored vendors kind of out of desperation because I'm so depressed and found that now Lcs can be shipped to Cali  So from that moment on I've been trying to learn all I can.

It is kind of insane I've been a member of a site called "the shroomery" for so long and never learned how to grow shrooms  I just loved the community and whenever I had harm reduction questions for other drugs I always git great advice here but it's never too late to learn and I've been here so long I know to take the advice because I've grown to really really trust this community over the years and honestly I think that's why I've been so successful so far.

Also I think it's worth noting I started this journey 25 days ago lol so I have alot of learning to do

Dude best of luck to ya!

I too just started a couple months ago. First batch I grew were ridiculously weak. I had to travel so took a 5lb actively fruiting block on a 12 hour drive and my hunch is all that stress (myc was BLUE when I got there lol) freaked em out and caused em to be lackluster. All good though, got another batch almost fully colonized now, and it's been fun learning!

Keep us posted.

Thank you my friend  Oh damn, yeah I think my cakes would freak if I moved them even a foot to the side once a day  that's cool you got some though even if weak. You're going to nail this next one though I'm rooting for ya  here's a link to my progress if you'd like to see I'm getting some great pins https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/28850157 :awecid:

Oh. That would be groovy.  If that happens,  I assume at this point nature would've have done it's work and  they would be safe to eat?

So take it out. break it up. and bury it, and that's it?

In a shady spot?
Sorry I know some of these things probably seem pretty obvious. I just want to make sure it's done right.

Just started my first PF grow after 2 successful attempts of growing mold on grain.

I probably should have asked this before inoculating the jars but regarding field capacity, how dry is too dry? And what happens if you inoculate dry PF cakes?
When squeezed the mixture a little water came out between my fingers but there were no drips from below. I used the ratios in the TEK and didn't want to mess with it for fear of messing it up.

Also, I plan on sending my cakes to bulk (provided they are all clean). I'm slightly unsure regarding monitoring surface conditions. Am I right in thinking I should leave it until the bulk is fully colonised then mist as needed to keep water droplets on the surface? Then stop misting again once the pins come through to avoid bacteria?

Bump. Just in need of a little reassurance please.

Well I can't help much in the spawn to bulk area. So far my pf tek fc research has been about my watertub which works great. And I'll be honest I'm having a hard time understanding what micro climate im trying to achieve. The humidity is making a strong micro on the sides of the cake but the tops look dry to me so its tricky when learning.

Did the mixture feel moist? Was it light and fluffy when spooning it in the jars? Easy to lightly pack like damp sand or was it heavy and plopped it packing tightly? More then likely it's just right.

I spent a whole night making terrible brf verm mix. Trying to get field capacity right had to scrap but the next time when I followed the recipie in that tek it worked like a charm. Seems like you did too.

In the pf tek thread https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24179086 it says : We want to achieve an ideal water content. Known as Field Capacity. I usually squeeze my verm until only a few drops of water comes out. I find that with these measurements though Field Capacity is met after adding the BRF

I found that to be true. At least the part that says after adding the brf he sees the right field capacity. I didn't get the verm to field capacity first it was way over. That recipie is magic when followed exactly.

When I did mine, first the verm water mix was above field capacity and after the brf I didn't get many drops but you can feel the water a bit when squeezed and you can tell its pretty moist. It's hard to articulate yet for me someone more expierenced will jump in and give better reassurance I just imagine you're ancy and I'm trying to give the most relevant info and as encouraging as I can.  But more then likely it's fine.

And again as a disclaimer I'm new to this just giving encouragement based on limited expierence until someone actually knowledgeable answers because you can take those answers to the bank

Just pulled 46.5 g dry from a single quart of spawn after a 2nd flush in a shoebox. Never got anywhere near this weight before. What's the upper limit? Is 2 oz possible? All I need is a 3rd flush to put out 10 g dry to hit 2 oz/56 g.

For multiple flushes, 2oz is extremely achievable. You can get 45g from your first flush with more culture work
