I’m torn on this plate. It looks like mold from the top and rhizo from the bottom

This a mold or just fuzzy, rhizomorph-free growth from the agar being excessively high in nutrients? Plate is 11 days old.

The focus is on the cover of the plate and not the myc but for Nats I think it is good. They can have very tomentose and/or rhizo growth.

I'm about to test an isolated tomentose Nat mycelium that grows vertically and hits the cover before it spreads horizontal. I will know after that for sure.

Nat myc is crazy.

That is more than likely to overlay, since thats technically what is happening.  Nothing wrong with it (if clean), plus the overlay is active.

Thanks for the help everyone. Plate continues to grow rapidly.

It’s MEA and I’m not sure of the mixing ratio as it’s a pre poured one from online. (Doesn’t list ratios)

Potato Flakes/Agar/Corn Syrup 12:8:4

I tend to get some that end up in combination Rhiz & Tomentose

Poor lighting at night sorry

I get this funny feeling I’m transferring cobweb mold.. struggling to differentiate between that and tomentose. Sometimes it’s easy to pick it but other times it looks condensed and organised.

Natalensis

Here’s a black cap Nat T1 from MS

It looks clean and organised but kind of cobweby

Hi S. Can you take a pic from the backside with it backlit?

I have this feeling that you may see the normal-looking mycelium that way. I’ve been told Nats are crazy this way

Or, we’ll find out that it’s mold. Thanks

It looks good, you can see that the leading edge is crisp and forming strands. If you take more transfers you'll probably start to see more rhizo growth. But you might still have this tomentose growth on top.

Many of my Natalensis plates look like this, they seem covered in the same overlay that later forms in a tub, and they will likely produce overlay. As long as the culture is good, that won't stop it from fruiting so don't discard plates just because of the overlay.
