Thanks. I shook it for the second time. Hopefully it fully colonizes and the grains aren't too dry. I'm using unmodified lids so I didn't loosen the lid too much so it hopefully wouldn't get even more dry

What's the longest you guys would run a 4in exhaust line to a window on a Martha? I have an input fan and exhaust fan already (planning to put the exhaust fan at the direct intake in the unit). I can purchase a second exhaust fan if it would improve my exhaust distance. I estimate 10-15 feet of vent working to get to the window as the closed is on essentially the other side of the small office room. (so going out the wall, up the wall, past a corner, then down to the window).

I realize it might be folly just due to the humid air condensing / dripping in the duct, but hey that's why I want to ask. Unless my SO decides it's acceptable for being out in the open I'm locked into my project closed. Worst case I'll attempt a 7.5lb alumina desiccant chamber venting into the general apartment and go from there.

My posts are long winded and dense.
Supplemented coir experiments< Currently ongoing spring 2026.

~Agar~ 1000mL water = 1000g water. use ~1% agar...1% of 1000g is 10g.  For cubes, use between 1-2% nutes (10-20g). For pans use 0.5% nutes (5g).

Everything I have typed is purely fiction, and is purely for personal amusement.
All images I've posted are not mine and I am simply posting interesting things I found on the Google.

The 3 jars to the right are not fully colonized due to the grains getting dried out. I was told by a well known cultivator here in my country that the uncolonized jars are okay to spawn to bulk. What do y'all think about that?

Never spawn uncolonized grain.... ever.

The only time I have ever used anything remotely close to uncolonized grain was pasteurizing oat n chaff and spawning directly to the oat n chaff which has oats in.

Key is to colonize the grain so fast the oats aren't an issue but this is only with Oysters.

Yea that's what I heard, but I'm pretty confused because people out here always S2B uncolonized grains that dried out and they are successful with their grows and are well known cultivators out here.
Check out these people spawning to bulk their uncolonized grains.

All their grain spawn they spawn to bulk is not fully colonized on top. And their fruits come out amazing with high yields.

Is there anything else I can do with the stalled jars? Like G2G for example?

Shake them to redistribute the mycelium and moisture.

Wasn't there a shroomery test done that someone shaved all the so called uncolonized grains off the top of their jars and bags and then mixed it with coir and it colonized the tub like they were regular grains...

... I still take them out just in case though because I wasn't sure if the consensus was it's okay if you're sure the rest of the jar colonized correctly.

Risk vs reward, you decide what your scale is.

My scale is always "you don't have a FFU yet just a SAB so err on the side of caution."

Why would that scale ever change?
I have a ffu but axenic spawn is axenic spawn.

Any acceptance of risk is a factor that affects the reward.

Using suspect grain is a risk.

Well I agree generally but also think that having a good FFU set up allows you to be a bit bolder with the risks you might take. Like you may have spent years being an absolute ninja with agar work and transfers inside a SAB but maybe you chilled out a bit when standing in front of a FFU.

At least in my mind that's how I would end up behaving knowing myself as I do. Although I would probably still be extra cautious about the spawn I used no matter what. Especially after I've been studying what to look for diligently because I am just sure I spawned a few bacterial jars my first go around and didn't realize it because I was too much a newbie.

Relaxed methods don't allow risk in, they just allow for relaxed methods due to experience which reduce the anxiety or work involved but you should never allow risk to enter your process regardless how confident you are.

In simple terms, your drugs should not be more important than proper technique used.

I just want to say I don't disagree with any of this but just a tiny devils advocate here. If no one took any risks, would our hobby be as accessible as it is now? Someone had to do something stupid somewhere along the line that ended up being for the best when they finished.

Doesn't apply to this scenario here but just trying to say I think if you're experienced "risk" has a slightly different connotation. Because you'd be better able to assess those risks and determine a more accurate probability for failure versus someone just shooting in the dark for the first time.

If being dry is actually the only reason it's not colonized it's no big deal, but if it's contamination slowing/inhibiting growth you're gonna have a bad time. That's probably why the general advice is to treat it as contamination.

And bury it outside because shrooms seem to do better fighting that stuff in nature?

That's what I've been doing. I hope I don't get too lazy when I get a FFU then...

Back on topic...

Question: When I'm harvesting, do I also pick up all the little aborts or do I leave them so they create a better microclimate for my second flush?

When should I start to isolate my first mycelium growth on agar 🧫 and transfer to new agar for acquiring a cleaner spawn sample? Here are some pics of plates that I have inoculated 7 days ago along with best close up pics I could take. Sorry for so so many points of inoculation. We had a bit of a flooding issue 😂 but all n all looks clean.

This is exactly what I was talking about in the cultivation picture of the day thread. Stro has a great write up on cleaning up Rhizomorphic mycelium plates but I can't seem to bridge the gap of information from spore and LC to that nice thick rope he has on his plates. Is there a write up that details going from spore and LC to where Stro is in his write up?

The problem is you're chasing rhizo and that's not always what you're after.

You are correct. I am chasing rhizo because that's what I have seen and read from the write up's in the database here. Is there one for identifying and cleaning Tomentose mycelium growth on a plate especially from MS swabs or syringes? Almost all of my grows have been from Tomentose plates. Only my B+ clone plates have thick rhizo growth. Myself and other new growers are looking for write up's on selecting and transferring starting with plates like Dad_Shroomer posted. Do you cut the whole circle of growth an transfer it to a plate or do you try and find an edge that looks like its the best even though I don't know what the best looks like? I need inside you TC's brains!
