I got some of these: "AirPort" Lids for LC and Grain Spawn

Quote:
These reusable “airport” lids are designed to keep contaminants out of your liquid culture or grain spawn, while allowing for adequate gas exchange.  Equipped with  super heavy duty injection ports, 0.22 µm syringe filters (13 mm diameter), and rust-proof stainless steel canning bands, these lids can be re-used for years.

But then I did some research and found several posts saying that syringe filters aren't enough for grain spawn.

Will they work or do I have to return them? :bored:

No they will most likely choke your jars and they will stall out. Syringe filter should only be used for LC. Use SFD for grain jars.

Ok this is my first flush ever and I’m a bit perplexed as to why they are all so short. I had to harvest them yesterday as they all had broken their veils. They never got more than 2 inches tall. You can tell by the pictures that they were healthy and hydrated. I was able to get 6 ounces (wet) / 17g (dehydrated) from the first flush. I dunked my cake yesterday and put back in fruiting conditions so I’ll see if I have taller ones in this next flush. I just don’t know if I’m doing something wrong. Any ideas? Like I said you can tell by the picture that they are healthy and hydrated so I don’t think it’s because of humidity and FAE. Thanks for any help you can offer

Whats the best way to top fruit a single bacterial quart of spawn? I rubberbanded a gal ziplock over the top and punched a few holes in it, but there was no condensation build up after about 12 hours, so I abandoned that idea and put the lid back on until I came up with a better plan. Cased with about an inch of coir as well. Ive seen the teks, but putting it in a tub is going to make it more difficult, without multiple jars helping to create a climate, right?

A Shoebox is the perfect tub for fruiting questionable spawn. 1qt spawn to 2 qts coir with maybe another 1/2 qt coir as a pseudo case to cover any exposed grains.

Do you place your shoebox in a monotub or simply play with the lid?

Oh good deal! I got the impression I was increasing risk of failure by spawning it, but this will surely make it easier to control conditions. Thanks amigo!

If you still want to top fruit, put the jar in a zip lock bag, add some water to the bag and zip it mostly closed.

What temperature was the jar when you removed it?

Too hot to touch with bare hands.

The jar is pulling air in as the internal temp cools. It’s whistling. Why didn’t you let the PC cool with the jars inside? You can break jars that are that hot putting them on a cool surface due to thermal shock.

But he didn't know? that's the reason it didn't blow
To tell you the truth I actually can't believe it didn't. the wonders of physics.
I had a gallon come apart in my hands once, but it wasnt whistling or id have been afraid of it

Sorry, carry on

If you use the purple handled shoeboxes, all you need to do it leave the lid on and unlatched for cubes. For Nats I flip the lid and leave the handles up since they like a little extra FAE. If the fruit gets too tall just flip an empty shoebox upside down on top.

The purple handled shoeboxes are very easy to adjust simply with different lid and handle configurations.

I grow exclusively in these shoeboxes. Only difference with clean spawn I go 1qt spawn to 3 qts coir plus the 1/2 qt pseudo casing

I mean, it wasn't *that* hot. There was certainly no pressure differential great enough to crack the glass, and it didn't get thermally shocked.

Also can someone tell me how my media bottle got fucked up? Could it have been from touching other jars in the PC? It was a 2 hour cycle.
