I’m keeping a jar without inoculant as a control.  Three months later it looks totally normal.

A friend gave me a fully colonized 8 oz oat jar. What is the best way to birth it? I'm still pretty new and I've only ever done BRF pf tek before.

I was thinking put it in a shoebox with some coco coir? But not sure what the amounts/ratio should be for just a single small jar (most teks are for larger quantities, obviously). Any advice would be appreciated!

You could get a small container for it.
A shoebox sized tub.

You can use a Ziploc bag with some coco coir: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/27280275

Ratio-wise, 1:2 or 1:3 (spawn:substrate) is a good place to start. You can use more substrate if you're very confident the jar is clean.

Hi team.

I've got questions around substrate shrinkage.  That's pure coir, nothing else.  Is the shrinkage not excessive?  If myc does not "eat" the non-nutritive coir, is this shrinkage then purely due to absorption of water? And, if so, was my coir too dry?  I do the "squeeze really hard, only a few drops should come out" method.  Lastly, for my second flush, should I soak this substrate after harvest, or is there nothing to do?

Yeah you should soak it after harvest. It would probably shrink less if you compress the coir as much as you can when spawning

So I had my first flush. I left the babies then misted it heavy last night. When I got up for work 5 hours later the pools of water were gone. Should I just let it ride? Should I add a new casing?

Damn, full body weight? I haven't put to bulk yet but going off beefs tub write up he says firmly but not with all your might.


I stick an empty tub on top and put as much weight on it as I can. The better it's packed the less side pins you'll get. I have NEVER used a liner

Shrinkage is a good thing and is indicative of production. Cubes do break down and consume parts of the coir. Coir is primarily comprised of complex carbohydrates such as cellulose.

no.

you start with F0, which is your starting or "wild" gen. Whichever you decide to start with, whether its selecting and stabilizing based on pheno alone or if you're making a cross. You grow out the initial f0 ms (spores) on agar and transfer until you have clean, uniform looking growth. now grow out the culture, take a clone. Grow THAT out. Now harvest spores. Now repeat this process until stable, usually 7-8 times. with each generation of inbreeding you are selecting based on pheno/desired traits both when you take a clone and when you select a fruit for your next ms, now we are on F1

its a little hard to catch on immediately if you're not very familiar with classic mendelian genetics or biology. But essentially you're going:

spores>grow>clone fruit (agar)>grow again>harvest spores

youre just alternating between growing out mss and making clones. you are narrowing the heterozygosity (wild or natural state) each time you do this selecting carefully based on your desired traits.

that represents one cycle or filial gen, which you will need to repeat until f7-f8, until stable and most if not all of the fruiting bodies are showing the desired traits.
