Shoot,  now I’m Thinking they’re allenii, when I got the print it was labeled azurescens, when they first started popping folks thought they were subsectoids.  So who knows.  Some kind of cyanescens type at least.

Last winter I was given a shoebox with some wild PNW P. Ovoid mycelium (apparently was near a costco somewhere, lol) in dirt, told to plant it in a bed with chips, and keep it covered, etc.

I kinda got lazy and set the tub under a stretched out tarp, after it slid around in my truck bed for weeks. I know it froze solid a few times, and even completely flooded to the top of the shoebox at some point when I moved it around, the few times I looked anyway. Neglected!

I remembered it this spring, and was going to transfer it under a rhodedendron bush or somewhere, when I noticed side pins forming.  So, I carefully removed it and put it in the center of a bigger tub, surrounded by alder chips, shredded up 7-11 slurpee holders, and a bag of potting soil on the bottom layer.

Anyway, I got a few little flushes coming out of the cake part that already existed, and then they went dormant sometime later, as it warmed up.

I thought I would see mycelium spread into the chips more, but they backed off, and no more activity all summer\fall. I heard they could fruit more than just springtime, or even get more flushes into November.. well, nothing, till now.

I've kept it watered, with the lid cracked ever since, and with a more watchful eye. Decided to keep it tubbed instead of a raised bed, until I transfer into large fabric smart pots. Thinking I could set the fabric pots right on top chip beds in different locations, and let them grow down in that way instead. Sound like a good idea?

Anyway, I noticed the cold lately has got them attacking the new chips again! I'm not sure the best way to go about it, transfer it to fabric pot now, or if I should leave it in the tub all winter again until it spreads more. Sure is slow!



My other question, is can I cut away some strands of the fuzzy mycelium, and clone it to agar as is? I'm setting up to grow cubes, and entertaining the idea of bringing some ovoids indoors to play with too, at some point. I heard they adapt well to cultivation indoors. I didn't think to get a spore print on foil..

If so, what kind of agar mix would I want? Would you mix some kind of wood filler in to regular MEA? Would it be the kind that has antibacterials mixed in, seems the tub has been sitting outside for a year now, teeming with microbes?

I was going to try making agar anyway for cubes soon, and figured I would ask if there are any other ingredients I should get, especially for working with wild outdoor woodloving varieties? Should I even bother growing indoor ovoids?

Cool!  Regular MEA is fine.  All these wood eating psilocybes are a challenge indoors.  All those microbes bugs worms and mites go nuts when you warm that thing up and have the thing contained.  But I would absolutely 100% encourage you to clone that so you have the culture clean and in your bank.  It’s almost like some of these cultures get to a puberty stage before they really start fruiting, and working with clones works really well.  Clone just like you would cubes, inner tissue from wherever you can grab it, they usually take a bit more clean up, but will also outrun bacteria, or even grow over and under it.  I’ve just used regular MEA, but using antibiotic types, or water agar may help.

I forgot to mention, the pic is from earlier this spring, the last few fruits I got before everything just basically aborted, and sucked back into the old soil cake it seemed like. They did drop plenty of spores too, right in the same tub, but I wasn't setup to print or anything. I just harvest and dried them.

There currently are no fruits, and I doubt it would start seems its freezing outside, but then again these ovoids keep surprising me how hearty they are.

I was kind of expecting the newer chips I added to be fully colonized by now, but only since it started freezing lately have I seen some more rhizomorphic mycelium popping out. It has made its way to the sides of the tub too, and many of the wood chips are white underneath.

I was wondering if I could clone the mycelium itself like right now, or even one of the wood chips, even without any fruits or stem butt type areas. Sorry for my noobness, but I'm just getting started into mycology finally. I know i could just transfer it to more substrate, chip to chips, but it's so slow it has barely left the dirt it was in as is.


I just found the indoor ovoid thread, so that is answering most of my questions about indoor stuff, and agar recipes, etc. Also about to start reading through here. Good stuff!

All good stuff man.  One thing about that indoor ovoid thread though, see if there’s an actual successful grows in there.  It’s still pretty young but looks like it’s a lot more spitballin than any actual mushroom growing.  Not that there isn’t some good anecdotal theory in there, I’d look more into what you’ve done and how it’s worked for you. 
Trying to clone from exposed mycelium may be possible, but I bet you’ll have a real hard time getting anything clean enough, like you might put in less effort waiting for it to fruit come spring, or letting us chill for a couple months and bringing it inside to see if it’ll fruit and then catch a clone.  Just my thoughts.  And that whole thing about J Allan putting ice cubes on their cakes or whatever seems more like a bunch of bull shit, like the John himself.

Oh, but yeah transferring myc to more chips and expanding like that is still a type of cloning, so that’s all possible!

I kind of figured as much, that waiting till they fruit again in the spring will be the best time to do anything. Or not? Should I take the tub now, and mix it all up with some fresh sawed alder chips, or a bag of mulch from lowes, and put in in a 5 gallon smart pot? I love that idea, and want it ready to spread the love to more beds ASAP for this coming year.

I'm not one bit worried that they will die on me even if i forget them again, after the way I neglected them sitting in a tub for months all last winter.

I'm so eager though, and they are so majestic to see fruiting! I feel like i could warm up the tub, and induce fruiting right now to get a good fruit to clone, but I'll be patient, and concentrate on cubes and basic skills first.

I've been foraging many psilocybes up here in the PNW in my days, and lurking the shroomery since the beginning, but never really knew about Ovoids much till I was gifted the tub.

If i knew they made their up way here earlier, I would have been looking around during the springtime, instead of waiting for fall time varieties like libs, cyans, baeos, stuntzii, etc. Probably even seen them, but didn't expect spring time actives like that.


It really gets me thinking, about having problems indoors with WL types. Why not bring outdoors inside then? Bugs, microbes, and all! Especially those of us up in the PNW, or in areas they commonly grow.

You've seen the BEEcosystem right? Where you run a tube to your window, and let the bee colony come right in your house, to a cool hexogonal frame hanging on the wall with a glass window?

Well, how about a wood lover ecosystem, where you just pump in unfiltered air from outside, right into the picture frame like monotub environment, so you can enjoy from your couch? Even let real rainwater trickle down and in from the roof, and drain down through the floor back outside. I feel like rainwater is important to fruiting of this variety, because mine started pinning after I left it flooding in the rain for a week.. And even ice cold temps are needed, seems mine just woke up a week or so ago from the latest frosts we been having. Its below freezing, and they are growing outside right now!

It sounding like ovoids have evolved to grow differently around different climates in the US. As if they are becoming different kinds altogether.

My tub is sitting on the porch next to a window, and kinda does seems like a waste of time to bring them in, when I can just watch right through the window and tub, lol.

That, and I could probably easily find a new wild patch every season, filling bags full, but I don't get out foraging much these days.

So I started a subaeruginosa culture from print and got a nice looking culture to experiment with. I inoculated a few sawdust spawn bags using some extra masters mix i had and they’re colonizing really well so it looks like a clean culture at least. My only problem is that the winter seems to have come early already so it’s way too cold to put anything outside. Should i just try again in spring after the last freeze is over?

what are you fellas doing to put your woodlovers to bed for the winter?

I was just gonna throw down another inch or so of chips and a bit more soil right on the freeze

does that sound like it would be alright?

what would the gold standard be if one wanted to aim for the absolute optimal?

I do that in the warm spring monts...sometimes they fruit in the winter if warm or they can fruit in early spring!

Pile of leaves 🍁 is all that’s needed. Snow makes them hibernate they totally live thru it unless maybe beyond weak and shallow beds

Feed your patch 1st thing come THAW , not too much, but enough for new growth to move and eat.

Your patch is bomb Nef don’t sweat pampering it too much.

Food 🍱 is most important, often fat flushes mean they are at end of what’s available
These things devour wood to dirt FAST
