How long have they been there? If they arent making progress its probably not gona happen. Is that the only reason you kept it around?

Dude, just peel up one of those rhizos and lay it gently in a new dish. Try to pick one that's studded with knots.

You'll see a beautiful culture emerge. It's already begging you to notice it's potential. The things most apparent in our existentialism are the things we work the hardest on materializing.

An example of how agar media formula affects growth patterns:

charcoal plates- low nutes
non charcoal plate- high nutes
same strain

I thought there was something wrong with my cultures on agar until I lowered the nutes, and added charcoal (not sure if that did anything).

Do they look okay, besides the non charcoal plate looking weird?

Great idea. I guess at was looking at it from too close and needed you to view that plate with a new perspective
I'm kinda sad I didn't think of that on my own, yet happy it's not too late and haven't wasted that plate possible potential, all thanks to you.

I'll do it tonight after work.

Thanks Nichrome!

Both your charcoal plates look a bit weird very likely because the charcoal.

Transfer to low nutes (1% or 1.5%) and ditch the charcoal, you'll get more uniform/circular growth.

Thanks for the reply!

My main reasoning with the charcoal was that I thought some of the cultures might be bacterial, so figured with a high contrast in color I might be able to view the bacteria growing. A couple transfers I did with a different variety barely grew at all, not even colonizing the wedge, and completely stalled due to bacteria. I opened one plate outside my growspace and it indeed smelled sour.

I have tried agar sandwich and josex poke on that culture. Just transffered the sandwiched culture onto a new plate.

Do you find food coloring is better than charcoal? I feel like many of the plates with charcoal I've seen on this thread looked pretty good to me.

Best to get used to a basic agar first. 1.5% lme, 2% agar powder, Pinch of yeast. Colorants and charcoal are just extra factors. You can be 100% successful all the time without extra additives. It is best practice to observe growth without them whilst learning (forever).

It's a gimmick.

All my cups look tomentose mostly and they take about 2 weeks to colonize to the 2oz cup but look good in general...

My recipe for 400ml is 7 each agar/lme and 1gm ny broth...

If I were to experiment what would you change?

Or leave it?

I never used colorants before, and I've been growing for awhile (not bragging just clarifying, I realize I'm new here)- maybe I also just wanted to be cool like you guys...

Jokes aside, I tried the black color because I couldn't see the bacteria, and I thought it might show up better with a black background.

I also tried water agar...did some transfers from those yesterday as well. Can post pics if you want to see progress.

Try 6g lme and 8g agar for 400ml.

You have little Rustys? awwww <3

edit: I use for 500ml 0.5gr NY for 400ml you can go with 0.4gr

I only noticed with NY that it grows slightly faster. But just using LME-Agar is totally enough. Nutes are not necessary
