I would wait. If you need them you can always add them later. It’s better to need a little more airflow than it is to have too much, especially starting out. Once the myc gets too dry there’s no going back.

Trying out these short tubs. I think either my spawn was not 100% or maybe I've been stretching the genetics a bit far. Seem okay anyway.

I only starting cultivating a few months ago (shoeboxes- small bins/trays - small homemade FC). I've been looking into monotubs and decided to go with this method. I've got a tub of "B+" and a tub of "Z" going. I also have a good bit of "RustyWhyte" spawn ready to go to bulk... anyday now. Just wanted to say thanks to the OP... thank you!!!

Just adding... I don't like liners. I'm not worried about side pins. I plan to float the cake onto a side... harvest reaching right into surface level... soak and float it back to the bottom for rd 2.

How do you remove the water after the float?

You may change your mind about liners down the road. Bottom pins happen too. Annoying as all hell.

You just hold the cake and pour the water out gently.

I haven't really seen liners really help with side pins personally. I feel like some genetics are more prone to side pins then others. They do seem to help improve my surface conditions though.

Liners are good for clean up. Scrubbing tubs isn’t my idea of fun.

How much gap should there be? I was under the impression as close to the sub as possible was good. Currently using 6-8 quart jars of spawn : 1 bucket of CVG.

If you are using the same tubs as the OP then 5” from the bottom of the tub. Say you have a 3” sub which is quite common then your holes will be 2” from your sub.

This sounds about right in my experience although I’ve not combed the thread for confirmation.

I run a 23 qt version mini mono and even they are a good 2” above sub level.

Just measured, looks like I did around 4" whenever I made these up (prob bc of outdated info). Looks like im takin a trip to Big Lots to get some new ones 😂

It won't be as pretty, but you can put a small piece of tape (duck/duct) on the inside or outside over the too low holes and drill some higher. The shroomies don't mind the hillbilly-ghetto decor much.
