Some say you shouldn?t sterilize you casings. Some do it wih great success.
I put the casing soil into the microwave for 5 minutes.
This way it?s pasteurized.

yes, sterilizing actually can be a bad thing concidering there are helpful bacteria that exsist in your casing, Pasturization is what you really want to do. Pasturization kills all bad but leaves the good to help.

It's not just about good and bad bacterias. That's true, a casing does contain some good "microflora" but contrary to what I've heard said on this forum before, the reason for not sterilizing isn't JUST because you kill the good bacterias.
It's simple really. When you sterilize, you're destroying all forms of life inside of the casing soil which will be exposed to contaminated air, you leave it wide-open for infection by the first mold that decideds to make a new home. By pasteurizing you leave some of the competition, which gives just enough time for mycelium to reach the surface and kill everything.
And aside from that, if you sterilize, you will kill the weakest bacterias and allow the strongest most heat-resistant to survive. they will germinate soon after sterilization and boom, there goes your casing. (Soil is very hard to COMPLETELY sterilize).
Does that make sense?

While were on the topic of 50/50 sterilization.. when your using the microwave do you mix up the verm, peat moss and water before putting in the micowave, or do you leave everything seperate?? e.g- put the peat moss in (dry) for five minutes, then the verm (dry), then mix and add water.

It's easiest to mix it all up before hand. But if you want to leave the water out, that's fine. But be sure the casing is at least a little bit moist or the microwave wont do too much. I've done it both ways. The logic behind leaving the water out for me is that when it comes out of the microwave, it's usually pretty damn hot. I then pour cold, Brita filtered water into the casing which cools it down immediately so I dont have to wait for 3 hours. That way It's ready to use right after adding the water.
But either way is fine. The microwave doesn't vaporize water as much as the stove will, so it will not alter the moisture content so much as to cause failure.

I just did 4 casings 3 weeks ago w/ verm/peat/oyster/lime and just put in a pot unmixed and stuck in oven for 1/2hr on 150 give or take and I havent had any contams yet. I used it as my bottom and top layer. Mushies just started last week.

Yeah, the oven's a good alternative. But it can alter your moisture content a bit.
