Casing Sterilization

This is my first time casing and I am wondering what if anything I need to do to sterilize the casing layer. My friend who is working with me says he thinks we don't need to sterilize. However from what i've read it seems like it would be a really good idea. Can I sterlize casing mixture in jars in a pressure cooker? I don't know about using that bag to put in your pressure cooker to sterilize. I'm planning on using the 50/50 tek. Also do I need gloves and a face mask when birthing the cakes into the casing? These are all things that I would have to buy. Does simple green work good for sterilizing instruments and the work area for when set up my casing? Or do I need lysol? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I don't know if you need to or not, but my casings fell to contams after the first flush until I started sterilizing. I also switched from straight vermiculite to Jiffy Mix at the same time, so maybe that's why my casings are holding the contams off better now. I just microwave on high for 10 minutes and let it cool. I store the leftover in the fridge in airtight containers - gladware, spare pint jars, etc...) I saw a post some weeks back where a member posted this method, and Anno endorsed it later in the thread. That was all I needed to see. Fast, easy, and it has the Anno Stamp of Approval.

yeah sucks to lose all your work due to not sterlizing in the final stages-it only takes 10 minutes in the microwave-put it in for 5 go smoke a J-then stir it and put it on for 5 more, then go finish the J -come back-its sterile

I see you had a recomendation to use bleach and lysol... i dont like these things. Use a glove box, and alcohol. i cook about 6 wet cups of case in the micro for about 12 mins. works fine. i had ba dluck with pressure cooking it. not sure why, but its no better, thats for sure. i would still sterilze it. i mean, the bag of peat i had smells musty to start with.. that shit cant be good going on your colonized cakes/grain
