Long-time lurker, first-time poster....

My new scrounged-together inoculating loop, constructed from an unused carryout chopstick and the wire handle from the rice container.

It might not look like much, but it signifies quite a lot to me. Today I'll be transferring some germinated spores that I recently streaked with this bad boy, all the more gratifying because they're from a print that I took myself a couple years ago.

My first attempt at growing cubes was about 30 years ago, attempting to follow the instructions in Oss and Oeric's MMGG. This involved starting with an inoculating loop on agar, but we had no idea what we were doing, and didn't pursue it past our first set of moldy plates.

My first successful attempt was about 20 years ago, using the PF tek. Syringes completely rocked my world, and that first little grow gave me the belief that I could cultivate cubes when needed, and also taught me a LOT about variation in potency...

I came back to it again a few years ago, this time ready to go all-in on the process. I started obsessively reading the Shroomery forums, and trying things out, and screwing up, and going back to the forums. Started with direct grain jar inoculation with multispore syringes, then gradually realized how horrible that was and started working with agar...

At this point I'm pretty settled in to squirting plates with spore syringes, pulling clones straight from colonized plates, dropping agar onto grain masters, then g2g-ing till the cows come home. I've also become massively risk-averse, for a number of reasons, which is part of the reason why I've settled on quart jars spawned to shoeboxes (I can run multiple cultures at once, pull tubs that are even remotely suspicious, etc.)

Until now, my risk-averse outlook has led me to irrationally avoid 2 things: starting cultures from my own prints, and attempting to streak plates direct from any print. I've made my own syringes from time to time, but still always keep going back to outside-sourced syringes based on the idea that they're somehow "better." And I've completely avoided streaking plates, based solely on my lack of success many decades ago.

So this little piece of sketchily MagGyvered equipment represents the dawning of a whole new era for me!

Congratulations on your first post..

A good source for the wire is the paper twist ties that you'll find your produce bundled to gathered with or bread wrapper ties..

Just burn the paper off and you'll find the best wire for making inoculating loops.

Thank you!

And thanks for the tip, I'll definitely keep that in mind for v 2.0...

Damn, and here I am holding a hot little piece of wire in my bare fingers.

One of these days I'm just gonna make a loop out of a dildo and some wire and be done with it.

When I think of long term storage In sterile water I think of five seven ten years.

Why Is it you never hear of lc. storage for five or more years?

Probably just because that's a long time in life terms. Enough time to move, change jobs/life curcumstances, lose stuff, stop or radically alter cultivation practices, etc.

The work and technical learning curve required to get some epic, viable, clean liquid culture suitable for that sort of long-term storage is also likely going to leave a cultivator extremely comfortable with the process of starting and selecting cultures from spores, so the only compelling reason to really push the cutting edge of that sort of research is personal curiosity.

And I know generally that, in my case at least, the stuff I had a burning curiosity about 10 years ago has since been replaced several times over....
