For any of you that have access to an Ace Hardware I found a plastic trowel there for I think $3 that works great.

Made this leveler that sits on the edge of a underbed sterilite 28quart container... but is adjustable to any size/subheight. That with a morter trowel pat down is my method.

Curious as to what the reasoning behind getting a perfectly flat surface on the substrate is? I've seen it mentioned hundreds if not thousands of times in various posts and teks but nothing I have ever read mentions exactly why it is important/optimal and what the benefits are. Thanks!

homogenous surface conditions create an even pin set which makes for a heavy and even flush that is ready all at the same time.

My tool that I think everyone would enjoy having in their tool box is a green laser pointer.

You can buy them off ebay or Amazon with battery and charger for 13.00 dollars.

If I held the pointer parallel to my filter, with the flow hood off this is what the laser beam would look like..

If you turn the flow hood on in two second you will not be able to see your laser beam because there should not be any particles coming out of your filter.

Now take your finger and tap the front of your filter and watch the beam come to life.

It's not easy to capture with the camera unless your an octopus, It happens fast..

If you move the pointer away from the filter you can actually see your outer perimeter of your work area, when the laser beam starts coming to life.

If you think that you could have a bad filter and It's letting contaminate through, the pointer will aid you in finding any leaks.

If you're using a SAB you could rig or permanently mount the laser unit to the SAB. and let the beam passes through It. Just think of the advantage of actually seeing If you do have absolute still air..

This Is the unit I bought:
laser ebay

When I first got my pointer I place the battery in just as you would If It was a flashlight and nothing happen.
When I reverse the battery It work fine..

That's a great idea! If you had a laser that fans out like they use in night clubs then you could actually get a visible cross section of
your flow area that would show you how far in from the sides you are getting turbulence in air flow.

Aren't there any party people here that could check this out?

It has an attachment you screw on the front of the unit and enjoy the light show.. You turn it by hand and get different patterns on the wall...

That’s awesome. Would it have any use in a SAB?

I hope you get a cut of the sales lol

I’m just guessing here, but I would think an amount of contaminants that could ruin a grow could still be coming through the filter and not register to our eyes with the laser.

Even if it doesn’t light up every microscopic particle coming through, I could see it being a useful tool to periodically evaluate the boundaries of the flow and alert you to any major problems.

I imagine that red would work also. I can't see why It wouldn't.

But I do know that green does the job..

Green is more visible than red, unless you're colorblind.

I was thinking about you having the particle counter, That's a cool unit. Do you have any idea what percentage would be living contaminates on the average?

I was reading that Aloha Medicinal claims to have 50 percent living particles in their outside air. One cubic foot of air has roughly one million particles and half of those particle are alive.

Does that sound right to you..?
