Indoor Cultivation Of Psilocybe Cyanescens: (Ps. Cyanescens will work best with this method, however the same methods can be used for psilocybe azurescens, with the addition of fresh european dune grasses to your substrate mix)
The Setup: Before building out your tub, you will need to grow out your stem but culture or spore print. To do this, you will simply cut the bottom half inch stem butt of a P. Cyanescen with desired characteristics. Alternatively, you will place spores directly on a freshly fallen but dry garry oak leaf.
Take an approximate 2" piece of cardboard with exposed corrugation. Mist cardboard lightly with distilled water. Lightly fold stem butt into middle of moist corrugated cardboard and tie with twine. You do not want it to be too tight, just enough to make the stem butt contact the cardboard lightly. You do not want it too moist either. Key note that this species vegetative mycelium does not like to be waterlogged and in nature it can survive a drought, but not prolonged flooding or excessive moisture. Place cardboard in the center of a new ziploc bag and put it into a semi dark place for one to two weeks until it has obvious colonization protruding from the cardboard. After the mycelium has colonized the cardboard, it will be ready to transfer to your shoe box tub
Preparing tubs: First Step- Use thick corrugated cardboard. Take a sheet of cardboard and place it in a clean tub of water just long enough to remove one side and expose the interior corrugation. Take the moist cardboard and hang it to dry out. (Alternative, you can buy pre exposed corrugated thick cardboard.
Second Step - Line the bottom of the tub with two layers of the cardboard cut to fit the bottom of the tub.
Third Step - Shred / rip up more cardboard into small pieces (1" to 2"), which will act as airways and a non nutrient, moisture retentive medium in the tub. Remember never too moist.
Fourth Step - The wood chips you want to use are Gary Oak do to its fibrous hardwood nature, nutrient value, and ability to decompose. If you look closely at the cross section of an oak tree it actually has thousands of pathways throughout the wood that nutrients and water can travel through to provide proper seasonal nutrients for the tree. Without these pathways the wood is too dense for nutrients to travel throughout that tree. It reminds me of cardboard in a way. Wood chips are usually cut into pieces that are 1- 1.5 inches in size. Narrow 1 inch longer pieces will work also. The smaller size chips seem to cause the mycelium to grow quicker. Ideally the woodchips you use will be fresh/green, but due to the resilience of this mycelium they can be older as well. Soak the wood chips in water overnight, and then drained and dry the wood chips on a rack until surface dry.
Fifth Step - Next you want to add 1/2 cup of soil in each shoebox size tub. The soil used in these photos was selected from under a scotch broom plant. Put the soil in a thick bag and then put it in the microwave for 5 minutes on high. Take it out and allow it to cool down, then put it back in the microwave for and additional 5 minutes. Allow to cool. The reason for selecting this soil was due to its lack of nutrients and slight acidity. Not sure if the sterilization was necessary.
Sixth Step - Add two layers of cardboard to the bottom of the tub, and continue by adding 8 cups of wood chips with the shredded corrugated cardboard, and the half cup of soil. Mix evenly, and leave the shredded cardboard pieces exposed to the air as well as below the surface.
Seventh Step Place the prepared stem butt culture that was in the ziplock into the center of the tub. I put a woodchip resting just below the inoculated piece of cardboard. The inoculated piece of cardboard will be exposed to the surface are as well as contact the wood chip below.
Eighth Step - For vegetative mycelial growth, temperature should be maintained between 20°C- 23°C, and then decreased to 10 degrees celcius after tub shows consistent mycelial growth. You can use a wine refrigerator to obtain these temperatures. These temperatures are typical summer to autumn temperatures where p. Cyanescens occur in the Pacific Northwest.
Ninth Step - Next you will add unsterilized ryegrass seed to eventually become clusters in key areas. This adds moisture, nitrogen, and nutrients, creating symbiotic relations with the mycelium.
Tenth Step - Once temperatures have been reduced to 10°C, fruits will begin to appear in 12 days with consecutive 3 flushes. You should experiment with "resetting" the flush, by introducing warmer temperatures, then going back to 10 degrees during the winter to see if they can continue to have additional fruiting. There's lots of slow releasing food for them in the chips so it could work.
Make sure to mist accordingly with distilled water throughout the whole process, never too moist.
Good luck and enjoy.

DAMN those are some beautiful looking shoeboxes! It's so great to see a definitively successful tek for cyanescens, I'll definitely be saving this. Thanks a lot man and good work!

VERY cool!!!!! Thank you for sharing! So many focus on Azures which is great, but I've been wondering about Psilocybe cyanescens indoor grows too. I have three tubs of chips growing indoors and fully consolidated but had not yet decided how to proceed from here. Your tek gives me a great path to try. I like the addition of the soil and the rye grass seed. I'll give that a try. I take it you allow the rye grass to sprout prior to cooling the environment to 10c?
Here is one of my tubs:

Those are for Panaeolus Cyans - dung lovers. This is for Psilocybe Cyans - wood lovers. Quite different, but both very potent.

Results are looking good.
Not sure why the chips should be Grey Oak though. All hardwood chips should work at least your reasoning why Grey Oak is so great would apply to any hardwood I know.
Also any particular reason why you are recommending distilled water? Tap water didn't work?

One more thing: What kind of care are you giving your tubs when they are in the fridge? Daily misting? Tubs covered or open?
You having them in there for 12 days straight?
That part needs a bit more explanation.

Awesome write up! Definitely some of the better indoor wood lover grows I’ve ever seen. Have you tried this with any other species?
Btw, many people here make money selling spores. It’s not that big of a deal…

Ehh harassment is pretty widespread throughout the internet. Shroomery folk have been pretty great in my experience, as long as you don’t mind critique. It seems like most people who complain about the shroomery get mad because they don’t like getting critiqued or questioned. But I say bring it on. We’re all here to learn more than we already know!
Looking forward to more stuff from ya!
