Experience mostly. Eating well as a result of your labor on land you own will never go out of style. Having a surplus to share and trade will never go out of style. Homesteading, ranching, farming will never go out of style.

It means you rely on no external inputs for survival.

That's as American as it gets. You don't hear much from us, because we're working the land and raising families. But we're out here living the American dream while other people who don't have their own lives together are preaching that they know what is best for other people.

Some of us are misled. That's all. The truth will bubble to the surface, though.

It has repeatedly throughout history. Too many people are connected and can read and write in the world today for the truth to be buried long.

Good people will continue doing good things and we'll persevere no matter what.

I think the term Fake News is misunderstood to mean reporting events that did not happen. There is some of that too but to me Fake News is presenting structurally biases opinions as news, like in this case.

I agree. The process has been facilitated by the click hungry media constantly whipping up controversies just for the sake of it. They are the enemies of the compromise.

The best example was the Wall funding standoff. Things like this are normally resolved by a backroom deal where each side gets half of what they wanted but with a plausible PR cover. But because the media made it into a Trump v Pelosi thing there was no compromise possible.

When you think about it this is when the gloves went off - in big part because the media pressure made it too costly politically to pull back

The media will taper off the covid stories rapidly enough that most people won't ever go back and say, "Huh.... it just disappeared in May, just like Trump said it might."

Yes, the rugged individualism is just for people who work for a living, whether they are workers or small business owners. I'm not hearing too many too big to fail banks talking about rugged individualism.

In 1987, Smith Barney had a famous commercial with British-American actor John Housman saying with a heavy accent, "We earn money the old fashioned way. We earn it." Smith Barney has since merged with Travelers, Citigroup and Saloman Brothers (the latter invented the bundled mortgage instruments that destroyed the economy the last time),  We wont be hearing any investment banks using that rhetoric again.

You can't eat industry nor technology nor any combination of the two. Can't eat finance either.

Food is the backbone of every civilization and will always be.

A nation can survive without industry and tech if there is food, but not only with industry and tech.

This means the producers of food had to come first and only then could people be sustained for any other pursuits.

This will never change. The method of providing food may, but the producing of food will always be human's most important task.

The city life is what's killing America. Everything about it. The universities, the crime, the waste, the poverty, the hate, it's all a big shit show and rare is the happy person.

Go out to the country and you'll find people that seem like they're out of the 50s. And they're beaming, radiant, strong, and have good morals. Not everyone, but overwhelmingly.

It is a niche that can still work for just about anyone as an alternative to the poisoned cities and slums and cramped apartment buildings and traffic and crime and misery found in cities.

It's tending the Earth. The people tending the Earth are indeed the backbone of America. Take them out of the picture and the whole country starves in a matter of months. You could remove any other segment of America and everything would continue on.

People are waking up to this.

I don't know anything about you. But I know that most of the people that I do know that went your route are escaping from society. Whether there is an escape from society or not is debatable. What is not debatable is that your route is not an option for the masses even if they were so inclined. You could buy land at a reasonable price precisely because most people don't want to live there. If most people did want to live there, you could not buy it at a reasonable price. That is an unchangeable law of real estate prices.

I like to buy tomatoes from a farm stand; they're better. But most of the food that Americans eat comes from corporate farming and that trend is not going away.

I like to be around a lot of people, even though I think a lot of them are assholes. I'll take the good with the bad.
