I guess the establishment thinks Trump should let people die?

The supplies have been here over a day now, and there's no news about them being defective or being equipped to spy on us (as if they need to ship supplies to do that).

A very good example. Both Trump and Putin are on the CNN list of villains so when they colluded to send medical supplies to the US it must be nefarious. The other pathetic angle the left wing media took was bagging the Chinese for using totalitarian measures to enforce the Wuhan lockdown. How do you stop an infected city of 11 million from imploding without cctv, drones and location apps? Would it have been better to preserve personal freedoms at the cost of 10,000 dead? How about 100,000?

Exactly.

I am in a minority on the shroomery, as I frequently defend the opposing side when they have a point about something or when my side make believes something about them.  I also attack my side if I think they're wrong.  People here get very confused by that and think it means I prefer the other side.

Not an epidemiologist but from what I see covid is quite hard to handle. It is so infective that cannot be suppressed easily but not lethal enough to stop people from thinking the societies can ride it out. With smallpox and Ebola no one could afford to be complacent but if the alternative to gutting the World economy is losing 1 in 150 infected - mainly the oldies - there is a half valid argument for the herd immunity strategy.

There are computer models for virus spread which allow for all factors and the covid combination of infection rate, mortality and asymptomatic shedding is nasty. Ebola was way more lethal but less infective and we managed to suppress it. I am not sure covid is containable.

There's also the non lethal injury that is happening to those hit hard by the virus, if you let the spread go unchecked there may be a lot more of that. These people with lung and heart damage will be more susceptabe to other illness. Tuberculosis comes to mind immediately, but there's a lot of other chronic debilitating infections that are advantageous in nature and a threat to the health of those that are well as their exposure increases. Flattening the curve will help keep the number of those damaged by the virus and the damage down.

Yes, covid seems to cause more damage to those with compromised immune system.

The really nasty dilemma will present if we are unable to contain community transfer with anything short of a full lockdown. China began to fire up the economy about a week ago and their new cases are still very few so hopefully it can be done. Another good thing is that the US is some 6 weeks behind China and so able to learn from their experience.

For s skyscraper graph of new (daily) cases click on the country in the table and scroll down -  China had 35 yesterday

Not in terms of the number they quote but it is the trend that matters. Their 35 may in fact be 350 but if a week from now they are still on "35" it will give everyone hope we are not looking at perpetual lockdowns.

I recently saw some graphics of the two different curve scenarios. The flattened curve is definitely advantageous, but it means the outbreak (at less severity) goes on much longer. The alternative is the high curve, caused by inadequate social separation, which would mean most people get it and if they don't die they have immunity.

But we have to be realistic. the flattened curve does mean more, and more lasting, economic damage.

What we are doing is trying to keep the number of acute cases below the capacity of the ICUs in hospitals. This is because ugly things happen when hospitals are overwhelmed. The only way it can be done is by slowing down the community transmission rates by reducing social exposure. Of course more ICUs will be added so maybe in June things will be better but the natural peak of the hospital load with high social transmission would come sooner.

So there are many variables in the first wave but if we cannot restart the economy without creating more waves we may be fucked.

Good point about the hospital capacities.

It's such a double edged sword. Doing the right thing with the disease, is going to make the economic consequences that much worse. We don't know how to make accurate predictions with the disease, but we do have a good idea of what happens each week with the economy. In the context of what we saw after 9/11, this one is going to be a real train wreck.
