Impatient, try agar! * 2
    #26303871 -

First post on here but been reading like you would not believe and lurking for a bit now. Just started to dabble and dip my toes in the waters known as mycology, but if there is one thing I can recommend for anyone new to the hobby who is too impatient for their own good would be to start doing agar NOW! Its very simple and no where near as intimidating as it sounds. Read a few teks and figure out what will work for you and just jump into it. No better way of learning than trial by fire. I found that meddling with agar gave me something to look at and work with on a much shorter timeframe then brf cakes or a grain jar. Not only does it keep you busy while you're waiting on other projects, but if gives you an opportunity to work and practice your sterile technique in your SAB, and in the event of some contaminates you get a close up look and get a chance to see them 1st hand. You can also quickly transfer at the first signs and not all is lost with said dish either.

Just one impatient first timers thoughts on it all though.

I'm quite new at all of this myself and i do agree completely. At first I wanted to try brf cakes, but after lots of reading I quickly understood that skipping the pf tek and going straight to agar is the way to go.

I agree. But even better, I'd say is to streak some spores across agar and make a few PF cakes.

Agar newb high five! Also started the hobby with agar last month and loving it! Put sweet-smelling wedges in my first 12 jars yesterday & today. Agar took the scare away from contaminants. Even if all my jars fuck up for some reason, there's plenty of clean mushroomy backup goodness waiting in the fridge. So thankful to all the contributors to this site, too.

Did just this, ms syringe to some brf cakes, streaked some spores from a print to agar and also dropped a few drops of the syringe on a sterile swab and streaked agar with that as well. Figured this was a good way to cast quite a few lines and get some hands on from a few different approaches. From there I've transferred 3-4 times with each strain and by the 2nd or 3rd transfer I was getting some nice, full, healthy white mycelium growth. I've also since prep'd some qt jars with wbs and dropped some agar wedges to those, which have taken off in just a few days.

One questions I do have, what do you experienced growers do with your agar dishes that are fully colonized from a 2nd or 3rd transfer? They look healthy and show no signs of contams after fully colonizing the dish, I just have further isolated dishes of that same particular strain that I plan to use on future grows. Are these just casualties of the hobby and soon get pitched after some observation or do you repurpose or utilize some how?

I see where you are coming from, but from my short time in the hobby I would say that I've learned quite a bit from my brf cake project so far and I'm hoping to familiarize myself with fruiting using these, so by the time I get to this stage with grain I have a solid understanding and don't jeopardize a promising future bulk grow. I don't have overly high expectations on the brf cake front, but still should provide for ample learning opportunities. If nothing else, I can clone or get a few prints from this project and roll it into another future attempt.

plates and cakes is how we have started. was all bought in for pftek from psilocybin bible, then started reading here, quickly learned the agar mantra.

you're on target JohnnyKarate, great thread! :dancer:

ref your question: on plates that have been transferred from that still look good we plan to let the 'grow out' until they contam or...maybe a pin forms, if so pick it off and put on new agar plate considering it a representative of what resulted from the transfer, if agar>grain plate anyway, and that grain grew something we liked genetically.

once plates contam out, or have dried out (agar cracking and curling up/away from edges) producing not even a pin then trash whole thing unless of course they are reusable plate, like glass or pp5.

:whathesaid:
Setting them aside and looking every now and then for agar pins is a great way to get a nice easy clone. Alternatively though, one could just throw it to a quart or two of grain and make up a quick shoe box. I'd rather go on a clone hunt then let a clean culture go to waste.

Makes sense, thanks.
I could see putting those to grain n making shoeboxes with every clean dish could end up with an excessive amount of projects n tubs going at once.

not every plate needs be expanded for bulk grows- lots of good clean myc on many plates is a great problem to have as an amateur mycologist!

you can refrigerate plates, will bring growth to near a screeching halt. also plate to slants for even longer term storage, and plate to LC when you know you got something good growing from it.

small grow containers for quick favorable genetics test seems great way to "see what you have" on any or all plates, easy clone from there to bulk in tubs. maybe try some outdoors projects, during growing temps ofc. and novelty grows, wine glasses, crystal skulls, coffee cups.

then you have tons of fun, now make tea and freeze some, make chocolates, gummies, mushroom-bucha, etc etc ad nauseaum. lol, another great problem to have, imo :dancer:

(dont forget to make spore prints of the ones you really like! :sporedrop:

True that, I suppose that's about the best problem to have for a beginner in this hobby. I guess when I started it was a mad rush to try and get some spores to germinate and ensure that I get a good bit of healthy mycelium not only to start the grows I was planning originally, but also subsequent grows that wouldn't be dependent on that first grows success for prints or clone opportunities.

Thanks for the pointer on the refrigerator, I'll have to utilize that to stall some of these things out until I get some grain jars prep'd and have everything ready for my next attempt.

I also like the idea of some of the novelty grows, I just stumbled upon a  real pleasing looking glass jar terrarium build that I think would be a fun project once I get dialed in with all the different aspects of a full grow.

Oh believe me I already have my eyes set on some spore prints, thinking I'll have to take a commemorative print from the first guy I get to grow

commemorative print, i love it, lol! Dcevlearn made a template of shroomery logo and a huge multi-cap print on sheet of foil then framed it, simple idea turned beautiful product. we want to do something like that, perhaps holiday 'cookie' design prints for harvests around those times, going to start with a commemorative now tho, love it.

I figured since it's quite a process and time investment it warranted something of the sort. Thanks for showing me that logo print, that thing is awesome.

Took a 4th round of transfers from some RW GT & Martinique on the 7th, some of the Martin wedges are grown out to a quarter size or better and looking super healthy, the others are not quite that size but coming along. The Martin's recovery period was almost non-existent, I'm thinking that might be favorable when I get around to dropping that into some grain, should start growing quickly, then really explode after an early shaking between 20-30% colonization.

There's a subreddit called r/sporetraders and there's quite a few reputable vendors on there that'll sell prints and spore syringes. Won't say anything more specific than that, since I don't think you're supposed to on here.

 got it. very cool, RustyWhyte is Pastywhyte's baby, i thought they were pretty locked into forum trades, good to see they out and about as long he gets credit desired.
have a good fella I already trust offered to send print of RW, was feeling too new so postponed until we have been around and got to point of having something worth trade. even if they don't want anything in return we'd still feel better about being able to engage community from that pay-it-forward perspective.

I did not know that until you mentioned that, then I spent the last few nights reading through that whole write-up and process of him developing the RW...what a trip!

It's crazy to think of all the different possibilities that one could do with a few different prints or spores if they have the patients, time, technique and determination.

I'm in the same boat as you, want to get a few grows under my belt and have something to trade and return the favor. What strains are you working with?

yah, this community be rockin it. melmak, aka homestead PE, i just learned about is another that had desirable traits stabilized by members.
gonna get us some of them, friggin huge monster leucistic  fruits :dancer:

right now we have 8 cakes each of B+, Golden Teachers (GT) and Purple Mystics (PM), about 1/3 are near 100% (rest are 50%, one contam'd out).

All three varieties are on plates as well, going to noc up white millet masters quarts and 16 quart Pods with rye grass seed today from T2 plates that look damn good already. PC cooled off overnight, hoping my grain prep using ratio method worked right (load dry grain and water in jar then PC, added 1/4t of gypsum to half of them).
yah, fun times indeed~ :jah:

You aren't kiddin' this place is a treasure trove of knowledge and helpful, informative folks :teacher:
Don't want to get ahead of myself, but based on my interest level at this point, especially in working with agar, I hope to work my way from these couple of prints I got to something worth showing off, or even possibly try crossing some once I get a full understanding of all parts of the process.
Came across a small half bag of wbs the other night, so I soaked it for 24hrs and simmered and pc'd last night. Now I just have to decide what I want to drop in these puppies. I'm leaning towards those quick recovering Martin dishes, but I also have a GWM print that I swabbed and transferred a few days ago and that 2nd transfer is looking promising as well....decisions decisions :awkwardconfusion:
I started with some cakes, but those were moving slow and I had some agar dishes shortly after that so I immediately jumped on the grain train and so far, so good.
Don't hear nearly as much about PM as you do about B+ or GT, I'd be interested to hear how those go for you and see some end results
