Re: OFFICIAL Nordic/Baltic Liberty Cap Season 2019 [Re: SideNote]

Nice posts everyone! Quite newbie to this forum (lurking mostly), thought I would save making a post until I find enough to take a nice picture, but unfortunately things have looked pretty bleak here in western Estonia. I have been able to find only 2 libs so far, having visited many fields that should in theory yield results, but I guess that 2 is better than nothing and it has motivated me to continue my hunting. Hope I manage to find enough for a nice trip for myself and a friend before the season ends. Good luck to everyone.

I've been searching from late August, many fields which I expected to be perfect but no luck until today - found my first libs, about a dozen total.

It's not a lot but I was ecstatic to finally find some. I will scope out some spots next summer and will be on the hunt earlier next year now that I know where and what to look for :mushroom2:

I know that feeling of finally hitting home.

Nice finds, and welcome to the Shroomery. :toast:

Just want to follow this thread. Has been a few years since I posted anything and also since I went hunting. Life has been busy. Found quite an amazing and interesting haul from a peat bog last weekend and this weekend. Temps are dropping heavily though and not sure of I will make it out again. These are quite unusual from anything I have found before, quite possibly P. Strictipes. Colour darker than anything I have seen also, probably due to the dark bog water. Some were growing right in the small pools amongst the cranberries. Will post some photos soon. If semilanceata or strictipes I can't be 100% certain, but they are definately active psilocybe and probably one of the two ... Unless a new species. Perhaps someone else here has experience with picking them in the bog? Location Northern Estonia.

You have yourself a very nice forest path there 😁 palju õnne! I have found a few similar locations, but never with that amount in those spots. Keep hunting, I think our season is almost done here.

I hope the season is not done yet, weather forecasts say the temperatures in Estonia will rise next week to above 10 degrees at all times and even to 15 degrees in daytime. Here's to hoping for a fruity October!

The forecast has changed a bit since I last checked. You might be right, and I hope you are 😃 I really started late this year, but was out of the country for about a month from August to September and then had a big deadline, so first got out about 10 days ago. First time checking the peat bogs (Raba) and was pleasantly surprised 😊. Still don't know exactly what I have, bit probably strictipes. Found about a dozen of the usual libs from one small field between two housing projects, they were growing out of the sand from buried sedge grasses. Also something interesting. Will try to get out to another bog soon and see if I can find some more. The one patch had hundreds in a fairly small space. There must be more out there. Quite curious to know if anyone else has found them in bogs also. Cheers and happy hunting!

The weather here in Estonia looks like it will be perfect next week—hope it holds out another month or so, I might just have a chance to go hunting! Kids are great but they aren’t exactly conducive to spur of the moment mushroom hunting 😝 Oh well—There is always next year!

What do you guys mean? Is current weather not optimal? I thought they liked day temperatures below 10c

Having three kids here, I completely understand. Although, had it not been for them it probably would have taken  a few more years to find them here (originally from Canada and moved here 13 years ago). I made a couple of farays into the fields before the kids, but was a little late into the season. Then came a time, with each one of them that I needed to walk them to sleep in the stroller (pram). That is when I first found magic here in Estonia, even though we live in a rather residential area, it is in the edge of Tallinn and there were just the right conditions for them. Never huge thousands at a time kind of an experience, but enough over a month or so 😃. Managed to collect a few large jars worth dried with each of the kids 😉. Sadly now most of the spots have since been developed on and can't find them anymore there. A few left though where they won't build, and also a few where they have now taken to lawns with some sedge grasses growing in them. Now I have my bog spots though and the yeilds have been fantastic.😁 Still it enough time to go hunting as I would like. But do manage some quality time.

In my experience they prefer nighttime temps between 5-10c or so. They can fruit with a little lower temps but frost not so good. Mind you I have found some amazingly blue pins after a frost. Typically they also prefer some sunlight and a bit of warmth during the day if possible, but not always necessary. Ideal in my experience is 10-20c daytime and 5-10c nights. But that is only my experience.

It's been minus over here but now getting warmer and rainy! Here are some findings from a few days ago in eastern Sweden

Day 1 started out getting 7 frosty shrooms early in the morning at a new random field.

Then, to another field I discoverd last week  it is a field with unusually dark green, tall grass. (No animals roaming). Found 580 big ones in 3 areas of around 50 m squared each.

Day 2 we began the day with some coffee above the cows pasture

Saw this bird hammering the tree:

Found some in the forrest right next to the pasture:

Then some more:

The sun has gone down:

After that I took this awsome picture which fused the sacred mushroom together with the moon - causing this alchemical process resulting in me finding my best patch of liberty caps ever right afterwards!

It was 55 huge ones next to 21 rotten ones glued together next 10-15. Closest to the moon.

Ended up with 510 from this field also so a total of 1090 from these days

This song is perfect for hunting:
"Keep your head down, keep on working, keep on digging to the end of the day"

quite possibly P. Strictipes

There is no such species. It's the same as Psilocybe semilanceata.

I think yours is a Galerina or perhaps a Deconica.

Sorry my friend, but are you serious? You are trying to tell me that https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_strictipes don't exist? (They have have been both documented by Stamets and Guzman.)

Since when? Even if it has been reclassified to now fall under semilanceata, of which I have seen no evidence to support that ... these mushrooms have nothing at all to do with any sort of galerina (of which I can personally correctly identify without issue) or deconica (gills are totally wrong for deconica also and I have found several types before).

My post was not asking if these are psilocybe, it was a request to see if anyone has found anything similar in our geographic area from the same type of habitat.

I actually remember when you first joined the Shroomery, and I am in no way an amateur, just haven't been around much the last years. (this being my second account and you can see the join date on this account), and I know a psilocybe when I see one. They are most certainly semilanceata or strictipes - perhaps something new, but given the peat bog habitat, they exhibit slightly different characteristics. A deeper color and can get quite large, but in general they fit within either of the two mentioned species. I have also found libs that had more umbonate caps in mature specimens.

As I mentioned above, very purple/brown sporeprints, easily removable gelatinous pellicle (on younger to middle aged specimens),and noticable papilla, especially in the younger mushrooms, but also most often slightly in the older specimens also. The photos I posted were merely an example, showing the color variations. They are quite hygrophanous and dry much lighter in the caps than when fresh. The young ones look very much like semilanceata, but the mature ones like strictipes. I personally have more experience with Liberty Caps, but then again most people do. These are active psilocybe, just curious as to if anyone else has found anything similar growing in peat bogs (mostly from mosses and sedge grasses). Even looking at the photos of the younger ones, how you could possibly jump to galerina or deconica is baffling, and in general I know that you are quite decent at identifying fungi. I would encourage you to read a little bit more into a post before making a comment such as the one you made, and also consider the source ... Not only that, but be 100% certain that a mushroom either exists or doesn't before saying it doesn't. It can cause a lot more harm than good, especially for those new to the field. Cheers and happy hunting.

You guys finding `em in forest-paths, now even in bogs (?! - never thought even checking this habitat before). Nice and good for you  But I haven`t been able to find any in my thousand kilometer of driving / looking for new fields all over Northern-Estonia. And now even my "secret garden" have been discovered by some guys picking it empty, damn you psychedelic god! I will find my way one day!

According to DNA analysis, what was originally named P. strictipes is apparently identical to P. semilanceata.
As far as I know, the two species were previously separated by rather slight differences in microcharacteristics, but
apparently there can be variations big enough in P. semilanceata alone to make this separation invalid.

Yet, the name P. strictipes seems to be officially valid, which I would guess is due to lack of any published
papers discussing the topic (correct me if I'm wrong here).

I guess to get a better grip on the taxonomy we would have to get some input from Alan Rockefeller, which is associated
with the late Guzman's team of mycologists and would thus be our best source for updated information.

Regarding Stamets, I don't think he has provided any significant work in taxonomy, although he undoubtedly
has been helpful in popularizing the study of these species through his 1996 book.

I went down the strictipes rabbit hole last year. Found this old post from Alan which seems to confirm strictipes = semis
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24590209#24590209

I guess until its official it will continue to confuse
If you find an possible example it might be worth getting tested?
