OFFICIAL Nordic/Baltic Liberty Cap Season 2019 * 5
    #26128761 -

I found the first liberty cap on July 23, but I couldn't report it here at the time... Since I don't see another thread I'm just going to start the "official" thread here and all of you nordic/baltic shroomers who want can join in and report what you find, discuss the season etc.

Please, no ID requests and only report/discuss liberty caps (and other actives) from the nordic and baltic countries, that's the simple rules of this thread  :super:

A couple of my fellow countrymen have also reported a few more finds this week. The temperature is going down and lots of rain coming! Good luck everyone! :mushroom2:

Happy to see this thread started! I'm new here but have been looking at the previous Nordic/Baltic threads and also read your book knarkkorven about where to hunt for mushroom photography - it was very helpful, so thank you. I am in the Gothenburg area and am excited for my first hunts.

I found some on Aug 4 outside of Linköping, and some today outside of Växjö.

As I said, I'm new here (first post), so I'm guessing it's best to wait to post pictures until I've had the ID confirmed

Photos to come as soon as I get them ID'd!

Nice one knarkkorven!

There's been a few reported findings on Finnish forums since 19th of July. I've been out a few times and actually just came back home from the bushes. No any kind of mushroom activity whatsoever. Way too warm and dry in my whereabouts, althought found a single dried out Psilocybe medullosa on my yard a couple of days ago.

Pandasalad: Thanks! But it's not my book and I'm not involved more than I gave permission to use a lot of my photos (in high res) and helped spread the word and connected the creator with a translator to get a Swedish version. He wrote the Finnish and English versions himself.

I have my own site about psilocybin mushrooms called "Svampinfo" with liberty cap identification guides etc. (only in Swedish)
http://knarkkorven.magiskamolekyler.org/svampinfo/

So... Today I was out riding my MTB in some forests and was passing through this clearing on a narrow path. It has some remains of an old house and is dominated by the preferred grass for liberty caps. I immediately thought that I must look down and 3 seconds later I spotted three libs in the grass on my left! It was the only ones I could find even though I walked around for a couple of minutes.

So I ate them and an hour later when I was back home, had a shower and finally was able to relax I felt some nice euphoric effects. Thank you dear mushroom god! :mushroom2:

The forest paths are very good in the late summer. Try it out everyone, just look for horse dung indicating that "spore spreaders" pass through once in a while and then look in all the Deschampsia cespitosa.

Awesome you all! Seems that the season has kicked off. :sunny:

I went for a walkabout to check some nearby forest paths, it was a success.

Most of the photos failed unfortunately, probably due to the damn moose flies, horse-flies and mosquitos attacking me constantly. But yea, new hunting grounds for me within a walking distance from my house.

Here's what I collected with some Pholiotina cyanopus.

Forest paths are great and also more stealthy than open fields.

Hello

Went out today to a local forest trail and found these

was wondering if these are liberty caps or not, they were growing in the same spot and were dry as hell when I picked them, started getting dark just as I found these so I had to bail after 10 more minutes of looking around with no luck.

Any help is appreciated

Oh my, that's a pretty nice haul for 30 minutes! :cheer:

But oh boy.. These can sometimes really surprise you with the potency. I had my weirdest P. semilanceata experience last night potency/dosage-wise. I thought just to elevate things a bit and consumed 15 of what I would call small specimens. I picked ten very blue ones from the pile and swallowed them pretty much whole, then after 30 minutes took 5 more. I had eaten normally few hours earlier so didn't even take them into an empty stomache. Couldn't have been more than 0.5g, likely even less considering the size and I got my ass handed to me. It felt like I had eaten a gram+. Not that I'm complaining - I had a great time, but this has never happened to me with such a low dosage.

I picked 105g fresh weight yesterday. A place that used to be a cow pasture but since a few years the cows are gone and the farmer only cut and collect the grass in autumn. I thought this change would disrupt the habitat for the mushrooms but it's still good. Last year I found them mostly by looking from above, but yesterday I had to get down on my knees and comb through the grass. Really hard conditions but it payed off! Some random places was really good, I could pick 10-15 right were I was sitting. Awesome! And I just found more and more and more transporting myself by knee forward. And lots of small pins as you see in some photos.

I only searched 0.1% of the area you see here. The place must have thousands of liberty caps.

Weather in Estonia for last two weeks have been: around 10C at nights, around 15C in day time. And big rain showers almost every other day for 2-3 hours a day.
So quite perfect conditions for our little friends.

Went out to my field yesterday (8 days in between) and saw lots and lots of panaeolus growing everywhere, but only around 35 libs to be found in 1 hour search. Have anyone noticed some connection between panaeolus and semilanceata fruiting times? Do they fruit in exact same period or perhaps panaeolus is more earlier (warmer temps) and then follwed by semis ?

Thank you for your replies. I recently moved to Denmark. The temperatures in my area stayed at around 10°C at night and 16-20°C during daytime also there wasn't that much rain in the past week or so. So i didn't hesitate to go and look for libs as i thought that those fellas like colder temps like 5°C or lower at night.
Anyway i decided to check two of my possible liberty cap fields. One is a cow field in which i didn't find anything and the other one is a sheep field in which i managed to find those two:

I'm a little surprised as those two libs are the only shrooms i managed to run into. I didn't find any other ones of different kind.
This is the field if found them in:

I was a little worried before going in because the field is wired and there is also a public path going besides but on one of the gates i found a sign which translates into something like this " the aerial has sheep in it. Keep your dogs lashed and if you run into any problems call name on a number xxxxxxx". So this propably means that i can acces the field and shouldn't worry about tresspasing someones territory?
Anyways i'll be going back to check the field later and good luck guys ✌✌

Looks like a good habitat, you should be able to find more. Keep going back every week. And go when the grass is dry and it's a bit more cloudy, it's so much easier when the caps are white/yellow.

dry and old or easier to spot?
Plus singles can lead to their mates with bit o rummaging sometimes...

these look like perfect specimens to me. Libs are only little brown mushrooms until they dry a bit and, as (I think) best way to store and preserve them is by drying, the sun has already done some of the work for you! I guess in Nordic/Baltic brown is commoner but in UK i know people which will only pick dry/white/cream ones and leave perfectly good brown 'uns . madness!
anyways there are way freakier ones out there! (check out some of the buggers on the Irish thread https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26199730#26199730)

i personally dry them at room temp near radiator/heating to speed it up a touch until dry as possible (others will recommend faster and more thorough drying).
I store in air tight container whole until needed.
To use I grind up with electric coffee/spice grinder and put powder into capsules for consumption. i can manage dose level through grind level and amount of compaction (from 0.1-0.5g in size 0 capsules).

Deffo easier to spot. Like this one.

Went on a stroll to a golf field and found this one growing alone. Looked around and then all thorought the area for some time but was not able to find a single another one. It's a young one and already white so does it mean that there is not enough moisture in the ground and that this little one is not going to grow until it rains? I am just wondering that this rain we had in the last few days was just not enough for new liberty caps to pop out and all those white single ones i am picking are just leftovers from some time ago.

Srr if i am sounding stupid but i just want to clarify some things out.

Anyways all i can say is that on an excellent day the creamy/white examples are big bastard beacons to draw you into decent flushes.

The season is long. Where you find just a few today might well produce a few hundred when conditions are right! Keep hitting it periodically, predicting conditions as best u can, and when conditions ain't quite right you should spread your wings check out nearby fields or just some spot drove by recently that seemed "likely". Why spend 2 hours covering every blade in a field you know can produce decent amount but as slim pickings at the moment when can cover some yards, maybe get less shrooms but ID couple more spots which might pay off big when all the conditions are just right!

happy hunting.

There will still be dew in the grass several nights after a rain.

If you didn't pick it, it would still have been growing.

Been out a few times the last week, my favorite spots are slow to start this year, I suspect the almost biblical
amounts of rain have left the ground too soaked, so I'm going to bide my time. Still finding some in various
locations, today I went up a mountain/hill of around 550 meters and found some quite large ones lurking in
the grass tufts.

Note the monster (2nd from left) in the last group photo, it clocked in at 2.87 grams fresh.

The first one might be a pale variety of one of the inactive Panaeolus species, not sure which though.
Second one is a Mycena species. It would help a lot if you take in situ shots too. Other than that, I suggest
you make separate threads when asking for identification, both because it will attract more attention but also
because this thread is primarily for posting pictures of confirmed liberty cap finds.

Still very nice and favorable Autumn here in Estonia...for some liberty cap searching at the usual fields (and one field that didn`t produce any at lat year).

Here some pics  The one with shroomies on my hand were found all in one tuft / patch :P

And all of them was picked by two people in 3 hours. Around 250-300 I think

It has been a horrible season in my whereabouts so far. Hard to believe it was like +25 celsius just a couple of weeks ago and now the nightly temperatures has been around -2 celsius, daily temperatures barely above the zero. I've been finding some, but yea.. Fuck this weather at the moment.

Found that patch today and left them to grow up. Probably will be killed by the frost, we'll see in a couple of days. The frost also killed or halted the Psilocybe medullosa growth on my yard and in the backyard woods, haven't checked the clearcut area. Found also a tough lonely Pholiotina cyanopus soldier today fighting against the cold. Can only hope for a bit warmer days and nights until it's over.

I'm in the Northern Savonia area, Eastern Finland. I know complaining about the weather accomplishes nothing, but man this is bad. Should be prime of the season going on at the moment. Thankfully it has been above the zero during the daytime so no "permafrost" yet and there's still time until the end of october/early november when the season ends in Finland.

Amazing finds @SideNote, nice to see that they do currently exist in Estonia. I thought that the humidity was still too low, guess not. Now I'm starting to doubt the cow pastures and forest paths, that I have been searching and not finding a single one. Found only the typical co-species.

I guess I should switch it up more.

Yea it's a pretty looking cluster. I didn't pick them because most of them were so small, but probably going back to check them today or tomorrow. The unexpected sudden frost is a really bummer, but atleast this morning there's no frost on the ground so hopefully things will improve now. Going to check also the clearcut area for some Psilocybe medullosa this week or next week.

Hello! Here are some pictures from my huntings in Sweden. They take place from the end of august in super hot weather to a few days ago. I'll post the first findings first followed up in
chronological order. Based on my last hunt the season seems to be coming to an end over here but I think I've got at least an other flush!

The location is eastern sweden, around the middle.

The habitat is fields of diffrent kinds close by to pastures of cows and horses.

I have found around 120-150g dried

Thanks and cheers for the fleinsopp!

Yeah they're really good. All inte same area of a few miles. 80% are caught in 2 fields.

One which they hide really well in the tall grass and under the dead grass - they get super funky looking. Right next to a cows field.

The other, which is in the village next door, is a field right next to a few horse pastures as well as another cows pasture where they are way more easy to spot. Over here they get really perfect looking with a straight stem. In one area, the grass is quite tall which means that one time when I went there at the perfect time, i found some enourmos ones which looked just like when they grow in short grass like at peaoples backyards and such.

I have gotten around the same amount from both these fields so I have all different types of mushrooms!

Went to check my fields after some recent rain and was left stoked .
All of them where fruiting and i also discovered a few new ones.
Managed to find 1177 in 3.5 hours.

The fields have been grazed by animals before. The ground was soaking wet and damp. As for the temperatures it's above 10°C ant night was similar the days before. Daytime up to 18. Cold rain propably did the trick though (??).

So how damaging to the shroom system is picking? How often is it best to get back to the same field? Also is it possible to dry libs on a radiator using a low setting and a piece of carton between them and not lose any potency?

Re: OFFICIAL Nordic/Baltic Liberty Cap Season 2019 [Re: Grybiene] * 1

Picking is not damaging unless you pick the mushrooms before the cap opens and disperses its spores.
On the contrary, by foraging in the fields and picking the mushrooms you are helping the species spread
as you become a carrier of lots of spores which then will spread further as you move around.

Been out hunting as much as possible this year but only found one lone shrivelled specimen on my last camping trip with the missus :frown:

Unfortunately I work in the city and don’t have a car so my hunting opportunities have been quite limited...

Wanted to ask you guys (I don’t think this breaks the thread rules but if it does I will happily remove it) Is it legal to purchase/possess spores? I live in Estonia btw... haven’t been able to find any info online that specifically addresses this question. Obviously they don’t actually contain psilocybin/psilocin but Estonia has some pretty restrictive drug laws it seems and I would hate to end up behind bars 😬

Any info you guys have would be great and been loving seeing your finds—if any of you are in Tallinn anytime soon, there is a really cool exhibit on mushrooms at the natural history museum—definitely worth checking out!

Looks like it could be a promising spot, thanks for the tip! Tbh there are quite a few nice fields within biking distance of the city, for me it is just a matter of finding the time—my daughter broke her leg last week so I’ve been ties up at home a lot more than usual which is too bad because the weather has been perfect for fruiting :frown: Hopefully I’ll have time to get out at least once more before the season is over...

Nice posts everyone! Quite newbie to this forum (lurking mostly), thought I would save making a post until I find enough to take a nice picture, but unfortunately things have looked pretty bleak here in western Estonia. I have been able to find only 2 libs so far, having visited many fields that should in theory yield results, but I guess that 2 is better than nothing and it has motivated me to continue my hunting. Hope I manage to find enough for a nice trip for myself and a friend before the season ends. Good luck to everyone.

saturday i visited my forest path, didn't expect so much mushrooms from there because last weekend i pick pretty much from there.

Just want to follow this thread. Has been a few years since I posted anything and also since I went hunting. Life has been busy. Found quite an amazing and interesting haul from a peat bog last weekend and this weekend. Temps are dropping heavily though and not sure of I will make it out again. These are quite unusual from anything I have found before, quite possibly P. Strictipes. Colour darker than anything I have seen also, probably due to the dark bog water. Some were growing right in the small pools amongst the cranberries. Will post some photos soon. If semilanceata or strictipes I can't be 100% certain, but they are definately active psilocybe and probably one of the two ... Unless a new species. Perhaps someone else here has experience with picking them in the bog? Location Northern Estonia.

You have yourself a very nice forest path there 😁 palju õnne! I have found a few similar locations, but never with that amount in those spots. Keep hunting, I think our season is almost done here.

I hope the season is not done yet, weather forecasts say the temperatures in Estonia will rise next week to above 10 degrees at all times and even to 15 degrees in daytime. Here's to hoping for a fruity October!

The forecast has changed a bit since I last checked. You might be right, and I hope you are 😃 I really started late this year, but was out of the country for about a month from August to September and then had a big deadline, so first got out about 10 days ago. First time checking the peat bogs (Raba) and was pleasantly surprised 😊. Still don't know exactly what I have, bit probably strictipes. Found about a dozen of the usual libs from one small field between two housing projects, they were growing out of the sand from buried sedge grasses. Also something interesting. Will try to get out to another bog soon and see if I can find some more. The one patch had hundreds in a fairly small space. There must be more out there. Quite curious to know if anyone else has found them in bogs also. Cheers and happy hunting!

The weather here in Estonia looks like it will be perfect next week—hope it holds out another month or so, I might just have a chance to go hunting! Kids are great but they aren’t exactly conducive to spur of the moment mushroom hunting 😝 Oh well—There is always next year!

Having three kids here, I completely understand. Although, had it not been for them it probably would have taken  a few more years to find them here (originally from Canada and moved here 13 years ago). I made a couple of farays into the fields before the kids, but was a little late into the season. Then came a time, with each one of them that I needed to walk them to sleep in the stroller (pram). That is when I first found magic here in Estonia, even though we live in a rather residential area, it is in the edge of Tallinn and there were just the right conditions for them. Never huge thousands at a time kind of an experience, but enough over a month or so 😃. Managed to collect a few large jars worth dried with each of the kids 😉. Sadly now most of the spots have since been developed on and can't find them anymore there. A few left though where they won't build, and also a few where they have now taken to lawns with some sedge grasses growing in them. Now I have my bog spots though and the yeilds have been fantastic.😁 Still it enough time to go hunting as I would like. But do manage some quality time.

In my experience they prefer nighttime temps between 5-10c or so. They can fruit with a little lower temps but frost not so good. Mind you I have found some amazingly blue pins after a frost. Typically they also prefer some sunlight and a bit of warmth during the day if possible, but not always necessary. Ideal in my experience is 10-20c daytime and 5-10c nights. But that is only my experience.

It's been minus over here but now getting warmer and rainy! Here are some findings from a few days ago in eastern Sweden

Day 1 started out getting 7 frosty shrooms early in the morning at a new random field.

Then, to another field I discoverd last week  it is a field with unusually dark green, tall grass. (No animals roaming). Found 580 big ones in 3 areas of around 50 m squared each.

Day 2 we began the day with some coffee above the cows pasture

Saw this bird hammering the tree:

Found some in the forrest right next to the pasture:

Then some more:

The sun has gone down:

After that I took this awsome picture which fused the sacred mushroom together with the moon - causing this alchemical process resulting in me finding my best patch of liberty caps ever right afterwards!

It was 55 huge ones next to 21 rotten ones glued together next 10-15. Closest to the moon.

Ended up with 510 from this field also so a total of 1090 from these days

This song is perfect for hunting:

There is no such species. It's the same as Psilocybe semilanceata.

I think yours is a Galerina or perhaps a Deconica.

Sorry my friend, but are you serious? You are trying to tell me that https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybe_strictipes don't exist? (They have have been both documented by Stamets and Guzman.)

Since when? Even if it has been reclassified to now fall under semilanceata, of which I have seen no evidence to support that ... these mushrooms have nothing at all to do with any sort of galerina (of which I can personally correctly identify without issue) or deconica (gills are totally wrong for deconica also and I have found several types before).

My post was not asking if these are psilocybe, it was a request to see if anyone has found anything similar in our geographic area from the same type of habitat.

I actually remember when you first joined the Shroomery, and I am in no way an amateur, just haven't been around much the last years. (this being my second account and you can see the join date on this account), and I know a psilocybe when I see one. They are most certainly semilanceata or strictipes - perhaps something new, but given the peat bog habitat, they exhibit slightly different characteristics. A deeper color and can get quite large, but in general they fit within either of the two mentioned species. I have also found libs that had more umbonate caps in mature specimens.

As I mentioned above, very purple/brown sporeprints, easily removable gelatinous pellicle (on younger to middle aged specimens),and noticable papilla, especially in the younger mushrooms, but also most often slightly in the older specimens also. The photos I posted were merely an example, showing the color variations. They are quite hygrophanous and dry much lighter in the caps than when fresh. The young ones look very much like semilanceata, but the mature ones like strictipes. I personally have more experience with Liberty Caps, but then again most people do. These are active psilocybe, just curious as to if anyone else has found anything similar growing in peat bogs (mostly from mosses and sedge grasses). Even looking at the photos of the younger ones, how you could possibly jump to galerina or deconica is baffling, and in general I know that you are quite decent at identifying fungi. I would encourage you to read a little bit more into a post before making a comment such as the one you made, and also consider the source ... Not only that, but be 100% certain that a mushroom either exists or doesn't before saying it doesn't. It can cause a lot more harm than good, especially for those new to the field. Cheers and happy hunting.

According to DNA analysis, what was originally named P. strictipes is apparently identical to P. semilanceata.
As far as I know, the two species were previously separated by rather slight differences in microcharacteristics, but
apparently there can be variations big enough in P. semilanceata alone to make this separation invalid.

Yet, the name P. strictipes seems to be officially valid, which I would guess is due to lack of any published
papers discussing the topic (correct me if I'm wrong here).

I guess to get a better grip on the taxonomy we would have to get some input from Alan Rockefeller, which is associated
with the late Guzman's team of mycologists and would thus be our best source for updated information.

Regarding Stamets, I don't think he has provided any significant work in taxonomy, although he undoubtedly
has been helpful in popularizing the study of these species through his 1996 book.

Now that was a much more thoughtful response. I realise in the world of science, mycology being part of that things change all the time. Don't get me started about the whole panaeolus subbalteatus /cinctulus change or the gymnopilus spectabilis/junonius thing, among others. Sometimes it makes complete sense to change a name or species such as psilocybe montana to deconica montana. I suppose a change always makes sense to someone, but often it seems like nonsense and unnecessary - especially when a species has been known as something forever and the vast amount of references to it can and do take years, if not decades to fix, adapt to or clarify. Especially in guide books that were correct one year and the next no longer.

In regards to the semilanceata/strictipes matter, to be honest that is the first I have ever heard of the change. I had even been researching heavily after these latest finds both on semilanceata and strictipes as macroscopically these presented just differently enough from 'either' in many of the samples collected. And I am well aware of some huge macroscopic differences even across the same species. At the same time, they fall within the differences I have seen in the past, just not on such a large scale through the majority of specimens.

Given my photos (which are not awesome) and my description however, they certainly are active psilocybe, and very closely related to 'both/either' of them.

For several reasons ie. not having encountered any reference to strictipes having been merged with semilanceata, the description of them (easily and noticable seperable gelatinous pellicle, spore print color- deep purple, purple brown, pronounced papilla, (especially in younger specimens) stipe features etc. Nothing else matches, especially not galerina, and the gills and how they join with the stipe also totally wrong for deconica. The smell also totally matches with semilanceata and the overall look and feel. After researching and hunting for so many years, having found so many different psilocybe and countless other species that I can easily identify - as well as my having been a member here for 20+ years ... I took issue with the response. I think for good reason. I am a easy to get along with mushroom enthusiast and have also had countless conversations and dealings with experts here as well as other places. I won't call myself an expert, but experienced certainly. I was even asked several times if I wanted to be a Trusted Identifier - but turned the offer down for various reasons. Biggest being I just don't have the time.

The pint of my post was mostly to see if anyone else on the region had encountered similar variations growing in a peat bog. The reason for their coloration is not certainly their habitat, the bog water is a deep, dark reddish brown and therefore makes the mushrooms darker and almost the same colour. The bog also has a tremendous amount of fascinating nutrients which can also alter their appearance.

Cheers and happy hunting everyone.

These look interesting. I take it that you have confirmed their psychoactivity through bioassays, not combining them with P. semilanceata or any other hallucinogenic species?
In that case - how would you classify the potency when comparing weight of dose to effects?

If you happen to come across more of them, you should definitely send a collection off for microscopy and DNA sequencing.

Other than that, their appearance and habitat are good matches to Psilocybe fuscofulva, but that is an inactive species as far as I know.

StInvetroThomas: I was thinking of Galerina paludosa, I looked at the photos and read the text, and when you mentioned the bog so many times I probably skipped the part when you stated that they are 100% active psilocybe. If you have done like Anglerfish said, not combined with any P. semilanceata (not even one!) and you ingested a descent amount to be 100% certain it's not placebo, then I also think this is really interesting.

Please look for more mushrooms and take lots of photos in the habitat, no more dull indoor photos on paper please.

Yes, at least it has never been detected in any Psilocybe fuscofulva. Here's a recent study:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4510267/
The same study that concluded that P. fuscofulva = P. atrobrunnea.

But I think the habitat is wrong, and also wrong for P. medullosa which are also close macroscopically.

Sorry, have been quite busy with work and home-work lol. Need some time to address all of these interesting thoughts and ideas. Quickly though, bioassayed yes, fresh, very lib taste, just a bit different, probably due to the bog water ... Very similar experience to libs also, strong but also slightly different - could have been down to mood of knowing where they came from, a peat bog - a little exotic and magical.

These also dry quite a bit different than the descriptions I have read for p. fuscofulva, the caps especially dry a light cream to white in many cases. Stipes also similar color in the end to how semis dry. Have also noticed on a few of them slight blue/green bruising, the effect doesn't however seem to last that long and fades even after a couple of hours perhaps less, just noticed at that point. Libs have also done the same in my experience - although sometimes the bruising is still slightly noticable after drying. The majority of libs I have collected don't display any bruising - the most blue I have found were by libs hit with a frost. somewhere here I have a decent photo of one that had a completely blue cap. At any rate, these are interesting to say the least - one more quick thought as I need to hit the sack and wake up earlier than jsualt tomorrow. Although these have been found in a bog, they have been very localised and not widespread. I found them in two spots over several km and all were found not far from the bog boardwalk within spotting distance. They were also found growing in and around sedge grasses, mostly in a drier terrain, with no noticable wood debris or buried logs. So also not the typical habitat preferred by fuscofulva, from what I have read and seen.

Anyway, that's it for me for now... Night all and happy hunting!

1st thoughts were always libs but I do like a bit of speculation

I also think i may be going down a Psilocybe fuscofulva rabbit hole this season.

My (admittedly old) version of Roger's Mushrooms, which has it listed as P. Artobrunnea, enticing states "not authentically recorded in Britain". If this is still true it'd be nice to find some. I pick on moors so think there could be a chance I would come across them, though perhaps Irish hunters might have more luck.

Great shot! Sadly I never have my good DSLR with me while hunting. Should bring it along sometime. Usually just my phone camera, which is quite decent - but lacking in certain situations.

The jury is still out on the ones I found in the bog, bioassay was right on though. Have also noticed what appears to be a bit of blueing in some places once dried, especially on the stems... And they shrink a lot - end result is quite Liberty Cap looking in most specimens. Just a bit bigger than my usual field finds. Will need to do a bit more research and send some samples off.

I think with the variability in some species, such as semilanceata, I like the idea of they would add a variation to the type on the end such as Psilocybe semilanceata var. Strictipes and so forth. It makes sense because some honestly open up their caps quite a bit in larger ones especially, but not always. I have seen giant and older libs that have a very slender and tight cap with a pronounced nipple, then as above some that are more umbrella in appearance with a slight nipple - which I for so long thought were strictipes, and also this is usually dependent on where I find them, usually a whole group will have either one of the features. These news ones probably also libs, but just the habitat is so much different than the field types. Just an idea. The weather has improved here and with just enough rain, probably will have a few other successful outings, just not back to the big unfortunately.

Cheers and happy hunting all!

It takes time and experience for sure. That's an amazing haul ST1R

pangeabish keep searching - there are some hunting days still left this season. It took me a couple of months before I was able to find any, got about 70 total from 3 successful hunts, each better than the last.

In the third image there are a couple (two) brownish lookalikes, which I didn't notice until after taking the photo - they had a black spore print and now that I am finding more I realized they don't look much like liberty caps.

Being a novice I also learned quickly that glass jars are bad (trapping moisture) and paper tissue sticks to the caps easily, though read somewhere that plastic is apparently not a good container material?

Scoped out some other pastures and nearby a sheep field in Northern Estonia near to Tallinn but no luck. I have plenty of time to hunt right now, so is there a general area that you guys would recommend? I am not asking for specifics of location (I read the forum rules asking about specific locations) but is.. e.g. Western Estonia better for the kind of grasslands that are good habitat for liberty caps or it's sort of all over the country and can be random?

yes should be that they grow until bigger frost, but as earlier user StInvetroThomas wrote, I think also that they need some sun and "nice weather" to fruit their most. Not only overcast and heavy cold rains. But will check this weekend for sure!

finding bout 1/3 than what I did 2-6 weeks ago. 2 fields - 1 cow pasture and 1 non-roaming field.

In some places of the fields which previously were super productive, they have stoped growing completely.

They need some extra sun nowadays since its been atleast 10 days of freezing nights and one day of pretty heavy snowfall!

Think this was my last hunt. But u newer know, the season has lasted for over 3 months with no stops in between  I have 4 different w.xyz fields which are compeltely different, each field has been flushing for 1 - less than 2 months..

got some more to upload:

(I saved these before they got destroyed, look at the machine in the background tearing up the grass)

Yep, seems that temps are going to minus side this week too. Field was very wet from heavy showers, managed to find 30 libs until heavy rain came again. Shroomies were very dark and stems weak, rain had "beat them up", it seemed. Overall seemed like season getting close to end.

Well, my best season so far im forever grateful!! Ye man. Though since im at a new location for this season i cant tell if it was better the previous years.

So yeah, as I was away on a trip the last week and a half my haul this season ended up being 2 liberty caps in total :crazy2: I was so looking forward to finally getting to experience what the shrooms got for me but I guess I have to wait at least another year and try again  Overall not very motivated to go looking for them anymore as I put a lot of energy and effort into finding them this year with little to no reward. But thanks to everyone who helped me and gave me tips.

I gave up long long time ago, it was one of the worst lib seasons I've experienced during the years. Ofcourse I was lazy too, but the weather was just all over the place so didn't feel like going out much.

It was -15 celsius yesterday, so it has been over for a while in here and yay.. 10 months or so to go. :uhoh:

I picked a few handfuls last Friday, 1st of November. Several nights in the blue here as well the latest week.

It's been a slow season here, never really peaking but dragging along since July. It appears to me that every time the conditions
seemed perfect, things would start nicely then the conditions suddenly changed. I won't complain though, I've had some really
nice walks and found sufficient amounts of spoil to keep me through the winter.

Sorry,  but your pictures aren't reallly good enough to make an id of your mushrooms, but they might be an Amanita species.
Also, this thread is specifically for confirmed Psilocybe semilanceata finds in Sweden/Finland/Estonia/Latvia/Denmark/Lithuania/Norway, so
your request is a little malplaced in here. I suggest you take better pictures and make a new post in the main forum, there will be better
chances for you to get a good id.

Yea same in here about the conditions. The below zero nights came early this year and everytime it started to improve and some rains came, back we were at the freezing temps. I'm not really complaining either thought, I got enough libs anyway to survive through the winter and I still have several hundreds of P. medullosa from last year and collected 50 or so this season aswell. Likely giving them a go at some point. I got also hundreds of Pholiotina cyanopus left, I gave them another go some time ago and they really are some potent little mushrooms. Had some good walks and found two new habitats nearby of my house, so in that sense it was a "good season".

Ah, still on my list to find those buggers, haven't really had an eye open for them so far but tempted to check for them next year.
Is the experience different from liberty caps?

The experience has been less "mindfuck" compared to libs and no nausea whatsoever. The onset has been also weird, like you don't feel anything happening and 30 minutes after consuming you get the feeling that these ain't working. Then suddenly BAM and you're zoned in. The next day afterglow and feeling is awesome. Other than those it hasn't been that different based on my experiments, but I do enjoy the no nausea or no any kinda of uncomfortable feeling.

I hope you do find them and I'm really waiting for the next summer to see if they fruit again and also got an idea about some possible habitats to check because of this years finds.
