Psilocybin treatment for depression- improvements?
    #26086609 -

Hey all-

First time poster, after using the growing forums for a couple of years to successfully cultivate P. cubes. I grew them specifically because I've had clinical depression for essentially my entire life.

I got diagnosed in my 20s, I'm now mid-fifties.

I'm looking for people's insight into using P. as an adjunct to therapy for depression. I'll be posting abt my first few trials, but I'm curious if there are any successful methods, like guides or scripts, to make the treatment more successful or last longer.

(I've read Pollan, various articles, as well as some of the original 60's research.)

I think this is the right forum - it seems to have more depression related posts than others. LMK if I'm wrong.

im curious aswell, im in the same boat... what i remmeber is when i used them and had a decent experience my depression subsided for like a solid 6 months and i felt more motivated, happy, i had alacrity and energy.Im going to get allot of shrooms and try to take them once every now and then to help treat it.. i hope..from microdosing to stronger doses.. im not sure what the best method would be.. i know in lower doses the feeling you get is incredible, similar to mdma which mdma is also being studied to treat depression, ptsd, and other mental ailments.

i tried lsd and it had no lasting effects on my depression , the shrooms did. im going to see very soon what happens when i start medicating with mushrooms

OK, so quick background:

Long maternal line history of addiction and depression and migraines. I got the depression and migraines, got lucky and missed out on addiction.

Shitty parents in general, including 2nd dad who was pretty much a narcissistic sociopath.  So I had the genetic predisposition for depression and environment helped it really bloom.

In my teen years it would sometimes manifest as straight up catatonia - I was paralyzed but conscious. I had "normal" times and then depressed times, so I was unipolar, not bipolar.

So fast forward to my 20s, got on Prozac. That helped but increasing the dosage over the years as the down periods got deeper was helping less and less.

Started reading a few years ago about the new psychedelic research, esp mushrooms. I'm naturally cautious so wanted to grow my own.

First attempt last year grew fine (PFTek) and they looked normal- gills, purple-brown spores, bruised blue, but they were DUDS. I don't know why,but trying a dried gram, then 2, (spaced out by 2 week intervals), had no effect at all.

Finally tried SIX GRAMS and was still stone cold sober, sitting reading a book and checking my phone. I don't know what I did wrong.

Tried again this year, grew Golden Teacher, Mexicub, and Purple Mystics. I confess I didn't keep great notes because I was throwing all kinds of techniques at it, trying to get something reliable dialed in.

First trip: about 1.5 g. After abt half an hour, said "ok that's sort of cool. Fractals. Wiggly fractals." Put on some tribal trance and had a relaxing couple of hours listening and watching. Nothing beyond that.

For the next week or so I felt... lighter. No facts in my head were different, no circumstances were different, but bad stuff just seemed like something that I was going to be able to deal with, instead of catastrophic.

Ok, enough of that, More later.

I created a self-therapy psilocybin regimen for myself that really helped me address some issues, I plan on starting it up again next week. Here's the thread if you're interested:

Psychedelics can be wonderful adjuncts to therapy. In my case, they put the issues I most need to work on front and center. They kick my ass and tell me why they're doing it, and it's almost always topics I wouldn't naturally have brought up in therapy.

I'd definitely write down as much as possible during/after your trip. A nice moderate trip a few days before your first session would be ideal IMO. 2-3g is my favorite range for those introspective journeys. The first session will likely be mostly interview and not much therapy, but your responses will likely guide how future sessions go.

Do you have a therapist already? I'm lucky enough to have found one who's totally on board with how I use psychedelics. I very rarely mention them in therapy though, it's all the stuff they bring up that is what's worth talking about.

You could also look into Grof. I've yet to dive into any of his work but some people swear by it

1st of all, thanks, feevers.

I've got a therapist, and a very good one, too. He deals with me on my level and has never condescended or talked down to me, unlike some.

The thing that makes me curious about improving the use of P for depression is that the first trip, the second one (abt 3 grams) and the most recent one, (over 6 g) have all had about the same result - about 2 weeks of greater clarity and feeling "lighter," then a stumble and fall into the pit again.

The first two had no "insights" at all, really. They gave me nothing to talk to him about, but they still worked. (His reaction was "You look completely different, so yeah, keep doing that.")

The third one was rough, with me saying a lot of scary dark shit, thinking... well actually about the same level of scary dark shit I think all the time, and asking scary questions about my childhood.

(I should probably mention that I have that "depression fucked up my memory" effect. My childhood is almost a complete blank, with little bits of memory here and there. I also have a shitty memory for events in general, and a very discontinuous "sense of self," like I'm a different person every couple of years. I joke with my wife that I'll never wander, because as far as I can tell, I've only ever been married to her for a couple of years (it's been 27).

Like I always say, "you can't soak a growing brain in cortisol for 18 years and expect it to work right.")

I haven't had a chance to talk to him about the latest trip, which is the only one that had any real content. But they all had the same success (2 weeks), which makes me think that maybe my main benefit so far has been the dialing-down of the default mode network? Rebooting from core, like in Jurassic Park?

Shit I run on. Cutting this, heading off to read feever's post.

https://www.mixcloud.com/MendelKa/playlists/psilocybin-v13/

This playlist was developed for depression.

5g, eyemask on kind of trip. make a ceremony out of it, have a sitter todo normal sitter things.. cuddle/ make food ect.

My mrs had great improvements with it. you dont need depression to listen to it oviously, its a great flowing playlist. with silent bits in! dont be fooled thinking its paused lol

on the idd occasion ill have it on in the background or while going to sleep, and it takes me back to my trip, very emotional stuff (for me anyway)

I didn't use any guide, just my own will and understanding of how mushrooms affect me.
Therapy is working a lot to, an understanding human being that didn't overreact over dark fantasies, she helped me a lot.

Now that my backstory is presented, every introspective trip helped me realizing, understanding and sometimes making me able to overcome depression mechanism, self hatred, isolation feelings, emotional dependant stuff and obsessions. It even helped me with the worst and darkest intrusive thoughts.
