How to improve one's own posture? (to help with Scoliosis)
    #5341350 - 02/26/06 03:00 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

I've been diagnosed with scoliosis, which apparently is what has been causing my severe but sporadic bouts of back pain. Physical therapy was prescribed, but I'll probably have to wait a few weeks until I can actually start. Until then I might as well try to improve my own posture to help prevent myself from aggravating the condition. Does anyone have any advice about this?

I imagine yoga would be a tremendous help in what you're trying to accomplish.

Really? Myself I would think that yoga would just make my back hurt, a lot.

I know that scoliosis has two characteristics: it makes your spine curve and it justifies medical marijuana. =D

Imo, you could find alot of help in stretching exercises like yoga. You might try it out some time (when you are properly warmed up, i.e. sweating). I think that a basic back stretch with your feet about shoulder width and your hands held together, finger to finger + palm to palm, somewhere around your diaphragm area (try to join them where most comfortable) would be good. This enables you to maintain a center of balance like this. I think this is really important for you, especially, because you want to take it real easy. You could possibly make things worse, so keep in mind that you need to stay relaxed. Bend at the waist and think of your torso as a stiff piece. Your reference point can be the top of your forehead or your third eye. Everything should fall around that. When your reference point no longer goes, then just stop and breath. Breathing is the most important focus that you should have. Hold for however long feels good. I find that, after a while, my arms kindof want to drop. So, when the time is right, I lead my hands to the ground, keeping my thumbs together. Then I just work with my fingers. Place your middle finger on the ground and let all the other fingers stretch down in a uniform, symmetrical, and naturally comfortable spot based around your first placement. In this way, you can move from area to area on the ground with perfect symmetry. I think it's fun.

Meditating is also another good spine strengthener. You get used to tensing your muscles all the time to support your weight. When you meditate, you can releive that tension and it rejuvinates your electrical pathways.

The stretching and the meditation go hand in hand. They will benefit eachother greatly.

Ah I missed the part where you said you can't even start PT for a few weeks. Once you get some flexibility back yoga would probably be awesome for you.

I could probably start off with very simple excercises now. I have some level of flexibility, I just try to be gentle so I don't aggravate anything. Would there be any place on the internet where I could learn how to do it myself, or perhaps a recommended book that I can purchase? I can't afford to pay for instruction in yoga, especially not in California... it's popular among the plebes here (who find it cool), so the prices for instruction have gotten very unreasonable (the same goes for martial arts).

My scoliosis is pretty mild, it may even be reversible... the problem is that it just hurts a lot.

Usually the most radical treatment is a brace. That pretty much reduces your flexibility to "not very." You can ease the pain with massage therapy--some insurance companies will pay for alternative treatments, and that includes massage. Deep tissue, myofascial, and connective tissue therapy (all of these mean the same) can correct your posture if you find a knowledgeable bodyworker. If you want the quick and bloody, get Rolfing(R) done. It hurts like a bear beast, but it works like a charm.

I know about braces, they're set up by a surgeon, and used to treat severe cases. My back is just a small bit curved, "mild scoliosis" is the official diagnosis. All components of my spine are in good condition, it's done no damage. Anyone who would think of putting me under a knife as a treatment for that would be a quack (not that it was suggested, I just wanted to say "quack")

I'm convinced that with the proper therapy this will all cease to be an issue, but that's partly because I want to to work out that well.

In mild cases it is a reversible condition, though... according to my medical dictionary.

The best remedy I have found, is go buy a zafu and zabuton, and sit (up straight!) in it to do everything.  Reading, watching tv, meditation etc...  Check out www.dharmacrafts.com .  I suggest getting a zafu filled with kapok, as buckwheat hull can be very annoying.

That sounds like it would definitely help... but those look pretty expensive

As it is, the physical therapy copayment is allready daunting.

Just buy the zafu, and put it on a blanket.  They are only $50.  Trust me, I have suffered from back problems all my life, and sitting on this has helped all the muscles relax into there natural state.  The trick is to remember that nature knows your body better than you do.  Leave it alone (ie, no adjusting) and it will work itself out.  I have spent over $1000 on back remedies, and this $50 zafu is the only thing that ACTUALLY worked.
