holy land....
    #2598994 -

so much violence has been caused over land...especially holy land

to ask a question...

if God made everything...then isn't EVERY piece of this Earth is holy then??

why would there be an exception?

--------------------
Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

I think the creeds of the world are terrible. Only by getting rid of culture can we stop the bias, but as that stands now, it will never happen because culture and tradition have ruled society since humans first walked the earth.

>culture and tradition have ruled society since humans first walked the earth.
-When humans first walked the earth, I'm pretty sure they didn't exist in society. They were probably on the go and too different from one another to have formed tradition and culture. Culture has been around for a long time... it brought people together into tribes. Nowadays, there are so many cultures with complex traditions you'd think it would be impossible to unify them all. Well, there are some ways around this. Find something that everyone can believe (and we better well make sure that this is something that EVERYONE can agree on) and spread it. Eventually, people will accept this as a stable base... and culture inspired conflict will deminish. The historically recent development of science seems promising.

from the book of tokens -
my presence is the substance of all things.
i am the virgin snow on mountain heights;
i am the fruitful loam in valley depths.
i am the gold and silver of the temple vessels;
i am the mire on sandals left by the faithful
at the temple gate.
see me and regard me equally in all, o israel,
and thou shalt see indeed.

You're refering to "Zionism" which is essentially the belief that Israel is the Holy Land of the Jews, ordained by God, and that it is thiers and no one elses. It's an elaborate excuse for genocide and colonialism basically. A lot of Jews don't subscribe to Zionism and are humiliated and upset by it, and its consequences.

Zionism reminds me quite a bit of Manifest Destiny, the idea that America has the divinely ordained right and destiny to colonize and own all of North America. It was the excuse for genocide against Indigenous nations as well as the war of 1812.

Power hungry, civilized Nations will use religion as an excuse for the extermination of other cultural groups and the expropriation of thier homeland time and time again, until hierarchy, dogmatic religion and nation states are all smouldering rubble.

ShroomHermit,

Oh man, homogenizing cultures is NOT a viable or desireable "solution" to genocide. You're saying that if we all believed the same damn thing the world would be a "peaceful" and better place in which to live, since cultural differences would cease to exist.

Wouldn't it be preferable to teach respect for other cultures, recognition that localized mythologies are just that - localized mythology - and not the ONE RIGHT WAY to live, and that there are no universal truths but rather specific interpretations based upon environment and circumstance...

A major reason religion serves as an excuse for state sponsored violence and cultural genocide is that it holds itself as some ultimate, supreme institution when it is in fact nothing of the sort.

I agree. People shouldn't have to believe the same thing as each other, in order to get along. Instead, they should be taught tolerance.

When I said "Find something that everyone can believe" I didn't mean to create another religion. Things like, the existence of the self and respect for others is something that I'd like seen spread.
