Anyone having any luck around Wellington? Or have we gone straight from "too dry" to "too cold/windy"?

You can use the search function to see what's been posted in the last few months in reference to Wellington.

Finds in Wellington:

Also a couple of comments regarding Wellington/Hutt area:

Quote:
Finally today the subs are popping in Wellington. It has been a long summer here.

Quote:
The Hutt has been going a few weeks now, pins up until the last few days. Bring on a cold snap

Quote:
I did try the big gardens and parks in Wellington but found next to nothing

Conclusion: Seems like it's kind of quiet in Wellington area, but there's definitely been finds there. It seems that people are especially reporting finds of P. weraroa, far more so than P. subaeruginosa, which is interesting and indicates that searching in surrounding bush might be a better bet than looking through woodchipped gardens. Although the latter is certainly easier than the former.

NB: I only looked at confirmed actives posted in this (the 2019) thread. There's also a number of other threads in relation to Wellington that may change the ratio of subs:weraroa.

Thanks!
I have been following this thread pretty religiously, and have read most of the official NZ threads going back the last 7 years or so. But I wasn't aware of that search function, that helps a lot with Wellington specifically.

It looks like Hutt has confirmed patches all over the place, but fairly strong competition. I imagine the competition in the western suburbs is far less, but there doesn't seem to be anything growing there. Either that or it's being cleaned out by people that don't use this board.

I'm hoping for some rain over the weekend so I can hit the bush with less people around to question why I'm inspecting every fallen branch
I'll check out your suggestions as well SteCon, thanks.

Sterile? You mean free of worms? Definitely won't be sterile though. Also, you should print them all, take the prints you don't want, make a slurry and dump that over some chips wherever

Or take that slurry, dilute it until it mostly just looks like water, then put that in a small water pistol and take short shots at a dozen or so chip beds...

By saying sterile I think he means they're not producing spores

Has anybody found anything growing around the Manawatu or Taupo area? Not after anyone’s spots just want to know if anything magical grows around these areas, being so far inland? Or is it a waste of time looking here. Cheers.

Hi All
First post, but been reading this thread since day 1.
Taken mushrooms plenty of times before but always obtained through friends.
A mate and I decided to get serious this year. We did a bunch of research, I read many threads from this forum, and we started out as soon as people were posting finds in here back in March.
Took us 3 weeks of many fruitless hours before my mate found a patch of p.subaeruginosa literally in his front yard.
My partner had been listening to me go on about what is found where, and she is a keen runner in the hills, so started looking out in her travels.
Nek minnit she finds p.weraroa.
Suddenly we'd gone from nothing to 2 places with 2 different varieties.
After getting our eye in, and some more research, within a week we had 2 more good spots. Fast forward to now and we have 8 - 10 spots we frequent. We've only ever found p.weraroa in that one spot, and just a total of 5 mushrooms in two visits, but we've taken in many hauls from all our p.subaeruginosa spots.
Once you've got your eye in and recognise the habitat signs, it's like shooting fish in a barrel.
Stecon, have been reading your posts with great interest as we too are in the kapiti area. I have no knowledge of previous seasons to base anything on, but they are absolutely everywhere, and they turn up when you least expect it at times. Was at a park where the missus had just finished a running race, and there was a massive patch just sitting on the lawn there.Sat in amongst it and picked all the large ones in full view of about 100 people, no one seemed to notice hahaha. Sometimes plain sight is the safest method! Dodgily jumping in and out of bushes does my head in. Taking the dog is indeed a great ploy, as you can pretend you're just picking up dog shit if caught off guard.
Found amazing patches on the grass literally on the edge of very popular walking tracks. Even went to the shop and was getting back into the car, and our front bumper was nudging a patch in the carpark!!
I agree with your sentiment about wood chips vs non-wood chips. We often hit the wood chip areas, they are really accessible and grow pretty prolifically. But I have come to prefer the ones I find in grassy areas by rivers etc. They tend to be much "juicier", with thick stems, and they just seem a bit healthier and more robust.
I have quite a few pics around but not many habitat ones, and I didn't take much effort with the pictures, they aren't as good as most of the awesome images I see on this thread, but may throw a few up later.
Love all your work everyone posting in here, it's fantastic seeing what's happening round the place, and have learned so much from you all over the last few months.
AW

And revisited the patch of Psilocybe weraroa var. subsecotioides following a positive ID of one i picked a few weeks back

Managed to get 25 grams dried plus this 65 grams wet.  Only taken .65gm so far, getting up the "balls" to have my first full trip.

Hi Arsene,

Great to hear you are getting results, attitude seems to make a difference when looking.  If you limit yourself to woodchips I think you end up disappointed a lot of the time. A bit of research and some perseverance looking and there they are in the most unexpected locations. It took me about 3 weeks to find some last season but once I found some it was like they were making themselves known.

My first patch last season was right next to a bus stop I walked past every morning, I wasn't out looking today but I found a patch in a neighbours front garden while walking the dog. Kapiti region has rocked this year by comparison to last which was still good though, I have found so much along walkways I haven't even bothered checking all my old sites from last year.

Sorry to be posting cultivation stuff in here, but I need answers from Kiwis, not Peele from the US who don't understand that $10US is $15NZ and that Amazon charges your first born child and both kidneys for delivery to NZ.

Just asking about sourcing agar. Reply there tho so this thread isn't filled with irrelevant stuff 👀
