Quitting the internet...my on going experience. * 3
    #26023279 -

So a few months ago I decided to completely quit social media, which had absolutely brilliant results on my personal life, but I found that the term "social media" can be loosely applied...for example is Reddit social media? I found myself still getting into arguements with people on Reddit, either through giving advice for it to get thrown back into my face, or just, honestly, conversing with stupid people.

So about a week ago I took it further...I quit the internet. I went from spending 8 hours a day to 0 hours...about half an hour a day actually, just to check emails, update my Plex library, and work related activity.

Quitting completely is not practical, so I have decided to limit my usage to an hour a day, I have picked Shroomery as the only place to communicate to people...I read a lot of Shroomery on my kindle, before bed, not logged in - I have since deleted my wifi info from my kindle too - I find this place to have a higher vibration than other places.

I read a conspiracy theory a while ago that suggested the internet is another dimension, as ludicrous as that could sound if you start to think of it like that a lot of things make sense.

Already it has made me healthier. No porn for a week...today I was able to stay erect and climax just by using imagination, before I relied on porn and could not "perform" without it. The last time I had sex with a girl was a similar experience. Porn seems to condition you in a bad way...is it a stretch to think the internet does the same? Especially in the social media - image obsessed world we live in. I am already finding myself flirting more, coming out of my shell so to speak.

Another advantage is I have been powering through books, both physical ones and kindle titles. I have disabled wifi on my Kindle, and I run a 42 character wifi password, which I cannot remember, so I literally use it for books and books only now.

I will update the thread as this goes on if requested. I urge anyone who is able to at least try quitting or severely minimizing the internet, even just for a week.

BTW my dreams, which are Reishi-aided, so really deep and vivid, are crazy at the moment...basically I live out internet-withdrawl symptoms in my dreams. I am also taking Lion's Mane hoping to replace the neurons associated with the internet, with new ones.

Love to all

I really like the notion that ive been thinking about this lately, that majority specially gen-z are mostly stuck on their cell.... phone.

Ive posted this awhile from the other subs, great report man. Ive also fully disconnected for 6 months last year. And upon return this site is what occupied me during my free time kinda realtime timebook with lots of freethinkers. I also consider fb as just pornsite now adays. Abstaining from porns gave me alot of energy and bringing back that imagination + sex life alive once again.

A few more days

- no porn and pornography addiction is all but gone now. Not been watching much TV, and skipping the sex-scenes too. Been having some intense lucid dreams involving women and sexual activity. I've run out of Reishi for the month, sadly, so this might fade.

- Spent about an hour a day online. Today a bit longer, had some stuff to do. I have my browser setup to delete everything - cookies, site data, history, bookmarks etc when the browser window is closed - which is annoying, but good because it means I have to enter a master password into the browser- password manager then manually log in to all my sites - that process of having to do vs just clicking, about 80% of the time I can't be bothered so I just leave.

I have only been watching Youtube videos, and only stuff like car channels. Avoided the news, and social media. I caught myself off gaurd browsing reddit and starting to get ired by stuff so clicked the X and went and mowed the lawn.

There's just benefits from this guys. there's no downsides. I thought I would be bored but I have read 3 books in 2 days, meditated more, done outside chores and activities and managed to walk more also. I'm actually starting to look at the house to figure out what I can do just for an excuse to be outside. I also find people bother me outside, less. Less wanting to murder dumb people who drive cars badly. Maybe more empathy...

The worst thing is that it feels so wrong to be on a PC now. And I feel so bad for all those people who have to work in an office 10 hours a day then spend the other hours glued to a phone or a tv.

It's liberty cap mushroom season in August and I can't fucking wait to be out harvesting them!

I'm interested to see how this plays out. While there are benifits to the internet as far as sharing ideas and information I feel that far too much of it is just dragging society down a very dark hole.
It's no secret that social media is addictive, the way you described having vivid dreams about the internet sounds eerily similar to the vivid almost lucid dreams of drug use I (and many other addicts) had the first few weeks after quitting heroin. I wonder how much something like that has to be messing up younger generations that are more exposed at a younger age. I'm old enough that I remember what things were like before the internet, I've seen it evolve from the days of dial up modems squealing away trying to connect to now and you simply don't see kids playing outside like they used to.
Back in about 2012 I had someone try to hack into my e-mail, Facebook, shroomery and some of my other accounts. Ones i could were locked otjers the password was changed so even I had no idea what is was and I left them abandoned. Even friends around my own age thought I was nuts just walking away from things like that. Shows how ingrained it's become in society now.
I hate to admit it but in my current situation where I'm recovering from a heroin addiction that's left me working to put my life back together I've found myself spending alot of my time on Facebook. Normally I don't spend more than an hour a week on it, preferring to be involved in hobbies during my free time. Now I find myself checking it multiple times a day compulsively, I don't post much don't say much either but for some reason I still spend hours on it inspite of the anxiety I feel on it.

Good luck with beating your addiction, you got this! But it sounds like your brain is simply replacing one addiction with another addiction - a very bad addiction with an unhealthy addiction - this is how the brain replaces neurons - so you might want to force it to replace with a healthy one?

Had a great morning sat outside drinking my coffee, just got on here now and I stopped and literally felt the anxiety arrive... I can feel it now, underneath everything...it seems like the internet is a trigger for my anxiety, something I never explored before. I think it's likely I will end up using it even less, even though I currently have work to do so have little to no choice. I am actually conidering selling my PC completely, (which then means no more Plex but I think I can live without TV it's called "programming" for a reason....) and just getting a big laptop and running Linux on it to limit it's functionality.

Anyway my quality of life is way way higher. Just this simple thing...

Office is also one of my past job. Its a painfully exhausting.

I admire youve also gone thru this while experiencing dark night of the soul.. There are far more benefits than the percieved downsides which is non. without tv/news or net for six months while feeling alienated from the society, i manage to keep myself busy for choirs..

Starting to notice that the real beauty lies deep within. That joy/happiness should not depend on something external whether it be material or another form. But something long lasting in the internal.

I myself have long way to go and would love a worry free life of a minimalist.

I agree it's not much of an improvement, but when currently unemployed with a car that's broken I find myself in a bit of a rough spot as far as getting back to working and being able to support my self again. I'm getting some help from my mom with money but it takes time
Unfortunately this leaves me with alot of time and not much to fill it with making it hard not to fall into that trap. Atleast I have been getting out to go fishing even though the only spot I can get to is a small pond in town. Also been working on fixing up my old mountain bike so I can start riding that.

Good on ya. The trick is finding things to do, but sounds like you've got that covered! I quit similarly, but fell back into bad habits eventually..

But, I still use adblock to block elements of a page (other than ads), which is helpful. It's really useful, I removed the sidebar from youtube, and the timeline from facebook (I only use FB to message friends), which reduces my time online considerably. I highly recommend. It's waaaay too easy to get sucked in...

Maybe I'll do the same as you, and just quit again for a while/indefinitely.

I have been considering this for a while now as well. It can be difficult in the younger generation of people (just assuming your grew up without the internet). It’s now considered important even for job interviews, staying up to date with memes and lingo and so many other things. Growing up with the internet i feel has (in an extreme way of putting it) debilitated me. There’s so much that revolves around it, and I fear deleting it all will have me lose contact with everyone. I have very few of my friends numbers or contact information outside of social media. I don’t know what I would do when i get bored ( holy crap, typing that definitely shows there’s an aspect of dependency) I know there’s a seemingly obvious answer but i am extremely nervous to go cold turkey

--------------------
Dying of boredom Ill try it all

Ill be faint like a crook

Its looks and feels great but look at what it’s doing to you, well that’s okay, look at how FEEEEELSSSS

Aside from being addictive, there is strong evidence that social media in particular can precipitate depression and social disorders.

So I want to reboot this thread and really recommend the practice. I do shit cold turkey but there's resources for weaning oneself off the internet slowly, such as reddit.

I find just 24 hours every 30 days is pretty optimum for me. I wish it could be longer but currently I require computer and internet usage for work. Still...32 days later and I have majorly cut down on movies, tv and computer games. Unfortunatly it's winter soon which means snow, ice, below 0C temperatures and generally a few months of misery. I am pretty sure I have SAD too (seasonal anxiety disorder) and I should probably look at moving to a warmer country during the winter months in the future.

I quit Social media and the effect it's had is remarkable. I'm only on here for mushroom growing advice. I use the internet a lot for formal education but not social interaction or news. I don't even watch tele. Except Netflix.

If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were: any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee."

This is exactly why I limit myself to 60 minutes of leisure internet time per day.

I'm self-employed. If I didn't create that discipline I'd be way, way further behind in my career lol.
