Help with finding the right blower for LFH * 2
    #26018410 -

First off, massive thanks to El Chupacabra for sending me this filter. Honestly I wouldn't be able to build one without him sending it my way, mush love to you

Ok, so here's what I got:

24x24x5.875in Biomax 99.99% HEPA Filter. 550 CFM and 1 in water gauge.

Here's a spec sheet for them that I don't really understand some of it means.

Now, I was pointed in the direction of this Dayton 1TDT2 Blower, 549 CFM, 115V, 2.05 Amp, 1640 RPM (link takes you to Amazon listing). Am I barking up the right tree with this filter, and will it produce the results that I'm looking for? I basically have enough money to buy this once so I can't really fuck it up and get the wrong thing, so I want to ensure that I'm buying it right the first time.

If I have all my ducks lined up all I'll need to do is build the box and get some silicone for it. I'm going to build it into a weird closet I have  I'm excited to be close to having a flow hood.

1TD2 is only rated for maximum 360 cfm at 0.8" static pressure. You need at least 400 cfm @ 1.2" static pressure.

Fungi perfecti sells the 1tdu2 with their 2x2 and 2x3 kits. I think its a bit overpowered(perfect for a 24x26) but with a nice thick prefilter it will work. Its hard to find a fan thats perfect for that size IME. The one I built uses a centrifugal instead of a squirrel cage which made the build slightly more complicated.

I’ve personally made and/or used LFH’s that have ranged from 80- 250 FPS successfully.  Turbulent flow after obstuctions is a more likely occurance in the higher FPS ranges but with proper technique it doesnt affect anything. With filters being used in non laboratory environments its better the be in the 100-150 range but the fan filter units which are made for using in a clean room only blow 85fps. Also good to note that fliters “fill up” and produce more resistance as they age. You can always increase the resistance but its not possible to decrease so overpowered is better than under, although I know a couple growers on here who’ve gotten away with underpowered.

Shit. I thought I was just going to get a thumbs up for all this. *sigh*

Any recommendations? I'm having a hell of a time figuring out which blowers would work for this, and I don't really have much more money than that one was going to cost, and the one that Bod recommends (as AyePlus) sells way more than Bod lists the price at. I can't seem to find an easy way to shop for these knowing as little as I do. Is there a catalog I can look through?

Yeah, well, they're also super over priced :frown: My budget is pretty close to $150~ give or take a little. I thought I had it all set and figured at this point.

Just call up your local hvac service/repair places and ask around for a 1/3 to 1/2 hp 120 volt used blower from a customer take off. You can also ask for a blower from a 3 to 4 ton AC system if they only understand that lingo. Chances are good that with a half dozen or less phone calls you will have a perfect blower that will be more than powerful enough for less than $50, maybe free. You can put some strips of gorilla tape across about 50% of the intake to reduce the flow once you get the blower home and wired up to verify it works. Then build the hood and test it out with a lighter and remove or add strips till you get it perfect 45 bend on the lighter at 6".

I'll try the HVAC route again. I tried it a few weeks ago and the few places I called and they all had extra questions that I was flabbergasted when asked so they were like "can't help ya".

120 volt, 3 to 4 ton squirrel cage blower, direct drive, 1/3 to 1/2 hp should be all the info they need. Just say you are building a garage fan to ventilate.

Your filter was bench tested at 550cfm. It produced 1" resistance.
Your filter is 24x24 so its 4 square feet. Times 100 fpm

So you need 400fpm at a little less than 1" resistance from your blower

as it tested at 550cfm to 1" at 400cfm it will be less than 1" resistance but not by much don't worry about it.

Basically you need a blower that pushes 400cfm at 1" w.g. or bigger. I would find one that can push at least 500cfm at 1.0 or higher

Thanks.

Outside of cold-calling these HVAC places (actually, I just submitted email requests to 7 places... I hope that works out to me), where can I look through lists of these things? Google seems to be kinda a crap shoot, and it's hard for me to find these specs on blowers. I.E. this Englander Blower BM-1376 is rated at 850cfm... but I can't find the information about what the fpm per 1" would be... sigh.

I mean, if I'm being honest I've watched a few videos on this, read a ton of shit, and I really can't even read what you wrote there bod ... or most of what AyePlus wrote... and parts of Sandman) *sigh* . It almost sounds like you're saying the blower will likely work that I originally linked?

This all makes me kinda want to bang my head against a wall.  :talkingtowall:

Ok, went back to the drawing board, rewatched some videos, reread some shit... Still kind of confused but trying.

The HVAC places that I've contacted all state that they do not save used parts, or that they don't sell parts to customers. That's 7 places, same answer. This is the problem living in a larger city, no one is willing to bend any rules. This route will not work.

I'm having a hell of a time finding places that list the fan curve that I'm told I need to be looking for. I'm finding that places tend to list everything out like this:

How do I read this? Is the "CFM @ 0.100-In. SP" the number I'm looking for to be over 400? If it needs to go further, up into "CFM @ 1.000-In. SP" the sites I'm looking at just don't have this information listed.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I also searched for the blower that I originally linked and used the TC only part and found this:

If you live in the states zoro tools is the best deal on the blower. That blowet was $160 with free shipping last i checked  Stop obsessing on the perfectly sized blower. The 1tdt2 is mor than enuf blower for any 24x24x6 inch hepa you will  find. You want it oversized. You can easily decrease the flow.....but if your  blower is sized perfectly to a new hepa, you will have no way of increasing  it as the filter clogs and creates more resistance. This is why we oversize the blowers. I am running a 1tdt2 right now thru a 36x36x12 and it's plenty of blower. That is an excellent choice. Just be sure to buy a quality hepa and ur golden.

The 1TDT2 is probably not powerful enough for a 24x24. You need a min of 400 cfm @ ~0.8-1" SP, and if Stamets is now recommending 150 cfm flow, you need 600 cfm min at this SP, and probably more like 700-800.

Do the math I guess, but I can tell you I am using the 1tdt2 thru a 24 x 24 filter and it is too much blower.  I have to cover up part of the intake.  Its a lot of blower. FP's bigger blowers are universal blowers that will run 120 or 240 and they are high dollar.  Check out zoro they have a nifty table where you punch in the specs you need and the appropriate blowers pop up.  OR call FP and ask them for a list of blowers that are appropriate.  They usually do pretty well answering questions, so long as ur not complaining bad cultures.  Then they ignore you...:goat:

Also, it looks like Bod did all the math of this shit like 2 years ago.

So... these statements are in contradiction. I know that Amanita virosa's posts are 6 years old, but this information doesn't change

Super lost feeling here.

I had the same issue with locating reliable specs when I was building my flow hood. The best resource I found was the Grainger website www.grainger.com . Grainger is an widely used parts supplier in industry so if you can locate the blower in question on their website the page for that product usually has a downloadable spec sheet that includes all relevant info including CFM/Resistance charts.

I went with a Dayton brand blower and I believe this site has specs for all of Dayton's blowers.

The graph you posted lists 360cfm at 0.800

So at 1.0 it would blow less than 360cfm so it's insufficient for you.

You want at least 400cfm at 1" but i would go for at the least 20% over that

Looks like I'll have to after this last string of comments

I also found a non-vendor site that shows a similar blower as I linked listed as working for the same type of filter I have

This shit is maddening :frown:

If you can manage $180 for the 1TDT8 they got em on ebay, free shipping. Thats what I used and I'm pretty sure its sufficient for the long haul. I'm not an expert with this shit but i haven't had issues so far. It passed the lighter test and I had to use 2 prefilters and I'm pretty sure it could use a tad more resistance.
Sucks that you havent had luck with HVAC shops in your area.

To get the laminar flow I suggest for you to look at this graph on the S.P. (static pressure) and what cfm you actually need..
Grainger..
scroll down

https://www.grainger.com/product/DAYTON-Rectangular-Permanent-Split-1TDU2

This is the same blower stamets at Fungi Perfecti installs in his 24x24x5.8 inch flow hood.
It's a little more than what you need but that is good. Just block the inlet a little with cardboard and duct tape..

Ditto on the 1TDU2 being the good choice if you are buying new.

So I see this rated at "CFM @ 0.800-In. SP 500/392". That looks like by the time it hits 1" that it'll have that 400 cfm number with 20% as Bod stated. I saw this before but was kinda confused by the "Permanent Split Capacitor" thing.... as in why do I get two number outputs? I want to make sure that I don't have to be an engineer to make this work since it's got split numbering.

I'm going to make a couple calls in the suburbs just in case I can get out there, but I'm going to cut the drive time off at 1 hour, and I'll be buying this one if that doesn't work out. Thanks again for all this help ya'll, seriously thought I could do the math on my own with this.
