Psychedelics and Alcoholics Anonymous
    #25941765 -

This is a pretty taboo subject for AA. Figured I'd write this here.

I am a recovering alcoholic of the hopeless variety. When I drink, i drink until i end up in jail or a hospital. I had my last drink of alcohol 3 years ago. I took a very large dose of acid at the time and realized the extent of my drinking problem, i had been in denial up to that point. I have lived a straight edge lifestyle since that day in 2016, giving up not only alcohol but psychedelics, marijuana, stimulants, opiates, downers... everything. Life has vastly improved for me.

Psychedelics have played a role in alcoholics anonymous since the early times in the 50's. Bill W. cofounder of AA experimented with LSD for multiple years and thought it could help provide alcoholics with a spiritual experiance and aid their recovery from alcoholism. AA also experimented with belladonna treatment which to my understanding is nightshade.

In my experience, I've really only had powerful spiritual awakenings from psychedelics. I am tempted to welcome psyches back into my life as a tool for self growth. Dont really feel i can have this conversation with people in AA because "its illegal" "you are just getting loaded, better reset your sobriety date." Most had never used a psychedelic in their lives. Good idea?  Bad idea? What you guys think?

well you'd have to be a weirdo to get addicted to psychedelics because its so hard. gets exhausting to try to keep dosing multiple times in a week. i cant maintain that type of schedule, but thats cuz im too busy with career aspiration.

Those groups hate any drug. I got charged with a drugged dui and when I explained to the counselor i had a medical marijuana card he went deep into how it was bad for me. Its my medicine prescribed by a doctor wtf does he know.

If you can do some one on one with some people there you can trust, you can bring up the subject of how the founder of AA had used psyches as a judge to how they react, then you can choose to continue the convo further depending on that.

Don't dob yourself in though. Some people can be batshit crazy, be safe and careful about who you tell.

They don’t need to know about your psych use.  You’re there for alcohol.

I am also a member of AA. I have a respectable amount of time of sobriety in the program. I never experienced psychedelics until I was in the program. The following is my own experience and opinion, take from it whatever you want:

First and foremost, AA is about alcohol. This is indisputable and found in the big book. I go to AA because as a result of alcohol my life became unmanageable. There are many who as a result of other substances have turned to AA because it is often considered the more "serious" 12 step program. Those looking to recover from other substances find the mindset in AA better than elsewhere and go there.

Use of mind altering substances is discouraged by most. Why? Many believe that while alcohol is their problem, utilizing mind altering substances in a recreational manner (getting high) will lessen their resolve to stay away from alcohol. It is also akin to the "escapism" that many utilized alcohol for, and puts you on unstable spiritual ground.

Modern AA has been strongly influenced by recovery institutions (rehabs). This in my opinion is of detriment. Things like "90 in 90" are a direct result of this institutional influence. The "no mind or mood altering substances" is also from the same institutions. In general I agree with that statement. I do not use any recreational substances including marijuana in my life. I do however treat psychedelics differently.

I utilize the mushroom in a strictly spiritual ritual. First and foremost I have set a strict limit of once per calendar month for use. This has a few implications. I ensure that I am on firm spiritual ground before use. I question my motives. Am I in the right mental place to do this? Is my motivation pure? You get the picture. If it isn't I wait. Often a few weeks or longer. I don't have to (and don't) utilize mushrooms every month, but that balance doesn't carry.

Utilizing mushrooms in this manner has helped in my recovery. It has shown me different perspectives on my own life, and helped me accept certain realities and insecurities. I am truly grateful for these experiences.

Now that being said I don't recommend it for everyone. Altering your mind is a dangerous thing for an alcoholic. I'll emphasize again that true introspection, the often uncomfortable type, is required to examine your motivation. Having a firm base in meditation helps with this.

I don't share my viewpoint with ANYONE in AA. I wouldn't want to influence anyone in a way that could have a negative impact on their sobriety. If it isn't broken don't fix it. These strict interpretations, often with institutional influence, help many stay away from the drink. My mushroom use isn't relevant to a program that has a focus on staying away from alcohol.

On another note, the principles I have learned have been the most spiritually relevant things in my life. I get a great deal out of AA, and besides Buddhism in my opinion it is unrivaled in its concepts.

Namaste.

I've met a few people at AA, NA and CA that openly use, encourage using, and distribute cannabis. It's tolerated by most. It's the least detrimental psychoactive substance one can really use/abuse. I think it's tolerated because many people can not or will not be totally abstinent and just being a stoner is the next best thing to that.

I know many people at Anonymous type meetings have used or occasionally use psychedelics; especially people there against their will who may be forced to test clean for legal, parental, workplace related or spousal reasons. There's also the breed that once used psychedelics as a tool for self improvement and it may have gotten them sober, but they have overused them since and now don't touch them because they have gotten the message and they put down the phone.

I think approximately 35-45% of NA, CA, CMA anonymous people have seriously explored psychedelia at some point in their lives

Probably 10-15% currently use occasionally and moderately.

About 2-5% probably use it more than once a month.

I'd say at AA the number drops to about

10-15% having seriously explored it

5% using occasionally

1-2% using more than once a month

Luckily people at these meeting generally share their life experience, what drugs they've used and how much they've used them.
I've found these meetings a good way to identify the drugs with the biggest potential to negatively impact a life.

Opiods, Benzos, Alcohol, GHB, Inhalants, and Cocaine are the big winners there. Very damaging to self-sufficiency, health, relationships, self-control, personal economy.

Meth, MDMA, Prescription Stims, Nitrous, And Wax/BHO/Dabs are the middle class in terms of harm. Likely to end in mild poverty, getting mixed up in some bad shit, potential mild health problems, damaging some relationships and getting fired.

LSD, Mushrooms, Weed, Ketamine, DMT, Mescaline seem to be the least harmful to one's life.
Not physically damaging really, potentially positive impact on choices, not frequently detrimentally used.

That's all she wrote.
