Re: RT vs. Last Week Tonight [Re: ballsalsa] * 2

At 3:40, John Oliver says:

"Listen, it is mother's day today, and there is nothing wrong with moving back in with your mother, it's just it's a little weird when your mother has to send you an unmarked militia to force you to do it."

Crimeans voted by about 96% to rejoin Russia; that's not being "forced" to rejoin Russia, and certainly not by a militia - that's obviously a lie.

96% is not a result you get in legitimate elections. 96% is a result you see when there’s only one choice on a ballot.

Maybe you should travel to Crimea and talk to the people there to see what they think, oh great king of make believe?

Or maybe just do a little research first so you don't keep making yourself look stupid?

German sociologists on Crimea’s choice
Written by ORIENTAL REVIEW on 10/02/2015
Quote:
A few days ago an interesting study, “The Socio-Political Sentiments in Crimea,” was released by the Ukrainian branch of GfK, the well-known German social research organization, as part of the Free Crimea initiative. Intriguingly, the primary objectives of this project, launched with the support of the governmental Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, were to “debunk aggressive Russian propaganda” and to “reintegrate Crimea into Ukraine.” Thus the researchers can hardly be suspected of being Russian sympathizers. So let’s take a look at the results.

In answer to the most important question: “Do you endorse Russia’s annexation of Crimea?” 82% of the respondents answered “yes, definitely,” and another 11% – “yes, for the most part.” Only 2% gave an unambiguously negative response, and another 2% offered a relatively negative assessment. Three percent did not specify their position.

So there you have it.  In 2015, only 4% of Crimeans opposed Crimean reintegration with Russia.

Are we starting a new round?  Is this you taking your turn?  I'm confused what's happening at this point?

Balls was a bit unclear on the rules when I asked if it's Enlil's turn ("That would be my preference, yes.")

Enlil protested, and in the absence of clear direction I went ahead and posted another John Oliver lie.

So balls - your call.  Are you now requiring Enlil to post an alleged RT lie from the last 5 years?  Or are you requiring him to address the new alleged John Oliver lie?

Make a FIRM decision!

I'm good with either, and after it's decided, I'll block the thread again, edit the OP with the updated rules, and we'll begin.

in this round Enlil will have the burden of proof.
From now on, I'll be more explicit in my instruction

Okay guys, I have posted the updated rules in the OP.  I have taken some liberties on certain details, but I think that they represent our mutual understanding of the rules.

Please confirm your assent to the rules as posted before I begin the next round.  If something needs changed, let's do it now.

The judge should be allowed to ask questions as needed between turns.
Aside from that, I'm ok with the rest as long as Fal agrees.

Two things:

1.  I believe we also agreed that the threshold of proof for the judge is 'more likely than not'.
2.  Now that it's you're turn, I see you redid the original agreement to give yourself the last word, but when it was my turn, it was the other way around.
:hmm:

Ask questions and then get answers?  Answers from whom?  Does that open the door for sources in answers?  I need more clarification on this.

That was at your request.  We agreed on that.

Also, if you're concerned about who has the last word, we can fix that problem by simply making a rule that the petitioner gets a final argument wherein he is not allowed to bring in any new evidence not previously introduced in the thread.

I think that's fair.

If you don't want that rule, I'll remove it.

1)good call on the more likely than not threshold.
2)It is an advantage for the petitioner.  We should have had it last time, but we didn't.  It was added because you mentioned the advantage of the last word.

@Enlil- ask questions of the person whose turn just concluded and only about the subject matter contained within the posts that made up that turn. Yes, I would want answers.  No new sources could be introduced during these questions/answers

So propose a process for that.  How does the other party know whether or not a question is going to be asked?

I think rule #5 is fair.  I only wished it had been suggested it before the end of the first round.

Same thing with rule #7.

I just noticed your OP doesn't say "Edited by Enlil (timestamp)".  Now that's a secret super power mods get that doesn't seem very fair at all.

Mod:  "Show me where I said XXXXX!"
Poster:  "I could've swore you said XXXXX, but in looking back at your post it appears you said something different..."
:hmm:

Why so snarky?  There's no need to be a dick to each other.  If you don't trust me, then find another opponent.  I don't know what to tell you.
