Have you considered that this friend didn't know how to respond or what to say? Don't write them off just yet.
I know what you are talking about, I shared some personal information with my neighbor of 20yrs, after confiding in him he all the sudden turned against me and started causing me trouble.
It started in early 2006, oxycontin was all in the news about its responsibility in over dose deaths, crime and addiction, I had been taking it for several years but decided to stop and try to live without it.
After a nasty 45 days of hell I was released from the hospital, my neighbor of course noticed that I had been gone for a long time and asked me what was up. I told him the truth and I knew instantly that I had made a mistake.
This guy was so freaked out that I had been taking that drug that his whole demeanor changed immediately, like someone had just rubbed shit on my face and he just saw it. From that day on he and his wife have treated me like I have the plague. These people have the nerve to call the cops on me for everything, for example, I had my gallbladder removed one week and the 2nd week I had to have my knee reconstructed due to injuries, these bastards called the code enforcement cops on me because I didn't cut the grass for 2wks and everything else they can think of to harass me.
I learned a valuable lesson from that experience, and it helped me to understand that I didn't really have friends that I could trust with intimate secrets and to be careful with whom I share things that can be damaging or possibly detrimental, you never know when someone will try to use the things you've said/done against you.
