Maybe if the US didn’t try to sabotage nations that defied US interests at every opportunity, those arguments wouldn’t hold any weight. Same goes for Assad in Syria, or KJU in North Korea. It’s easy to scapegoat the US because we’ve been the dominant imperial power for nearly a century.

Exactly - it's easy to scapegoat the US because that, and we do sabotage them given the opportunity. But that doesn't mean they weren't corrupt POS to begin with either

So it's important to point out the role of the US (and other actors for that matter) - but throwing the blame in that direction detracts from the changes that need to be made that will actually improve the lot of said country - I think for better or usually for the worse, foreign interference to some degree is a given in any major political situation across the globe, and if that becomes the focus of attention of said country then rarely does the actual change that needs to be made - happen (See 2016 election... etc.)

... Scapegoats make for great unifiers and talking points - but ultimately they derail the train so hard that the actual focus is lost... it just makes way for fouler schemes run amock... see USSR/Nazi's.

Then it's not scapegoating, is it?

Nobody is saying the weren't corrupt, but what government, including (and especially) the US isn't?

Actually, the best thing the US can do to help is remove our sanctions.  But we'll never do that because that might make socialism look good again, like it was under Chavez.

Yeah which one isn't  that doesn't mean there's no difference between one that's completely dysfunctionally corrupt and one that's functionally corrupt

It's scapegoating when it's not the primary cause

And yeah, as it was said earlier - it had the appearance of "working" to a degree under Chavez (if you ignored the murderous gangs of government criminal millitas, and guerilla warfare brewing on the side) while there was a massive oil price glut that gave Venezuela way more money than they needed to work with - then the price shifts a little bit, the government shifts a tiny bit and it all comes crashing down because that money wasn't spent remotely resposibly.

It may have looked good at first, but Chavez was sowing the seeds for the current situation. Like I said, he had the great fortune of artificially high oil prices. The economy he created was not sustainable, as is painfully obvious now.

All you have to do to have a sustainable economy is establish yourself as the world’s one imperial superpower, then your economy will be great (only crash once every 8 years) and your citizens will flourish (one fifth of children starving, 80% of populous can’t afford a $1000 emergency).

No, I didn't concede, and you haven't found any fake news on RT (please respond in the other thread).

Actually an article from 2016, but enjoyed the insight

Quote:
Amber LeMay, a 60-year-old, self-described drag queen, moved to Burlington, Vermont, in 1987 from Lima, Ohio.

Bernie Sanders was mayor of Burlington back then. LeMay said she fell in love with the place.

ā€œI was impressed with the open and vocal gay community,ā€ she said. ā€œThere was the monthly newspaper, Out In The Mountains, and there were frequent protests and demonstrations with gay themes. This was a new world for me.ā€

LeMay is founder of The House Of LeMay, a drag performance team she founded in the early ’90s. She is also founder of The League of Drag Queen Voters.

ā€œFrom what I understand, [Sanders] didn’t do anything specific for the gay community,ā€ said LeMay. ā€œHe just treated them like he treated everyone else. He gave opportunities and the gay community took him up on them.ā€

Gay-rights organizers had planned Burlington’s first pride parade four years before LeMay had arrived in 1983. Many community members and politicians had opposed it. But Sanders, who was in his first term as mayor, vocally backed the parade, citing the right to march as a civil liberties issue.

In a memo written a day before the parade, Sanders wrote, ā€œIn our democratic society, it is the responsibility of government to safeguard civil liberties and civil rights—especially the freedom of speech and expression. In a free society, we must all be committed to the mutual respect of each others’ lifestyle.ā€

Two years after the parade, Sanders signed a city ordinance that further prohibited housing discrimination. The ordinance gave legal protection to the gay community, as well as welfare recipients, the elderly, and the handicapped.

Alana Cleverley is a 29-year-old transgender woman who lives in Montpelier, Vermont’s capital. A few weeks ago, she got a tattoo of Sanders inked on her ankle, in part because of the work Sanders has done for the LGBT community.

ā€œHis actions show that he feels that everybody should be treated as equals,ā€ said Cleverley. ā€œEverybody should have equal rights regardless of their situation and regardless of their gender. He has fought for all of that and made it way easier for everybody in the community. Not just for trans people, but for everybody.ā€

According to Cleverley, Sanders changed attitudes and helped shape Vermont into a more accepting state. She said she feels safer in Vermont than anywhere else.

ā€œI can easily go anywhere designed for females, even though I was not born a female,ā€ said Cleverley. ā€œThe fact that we are such a progressive state that allows for that has made my life so much easier.ā€

In 2015, Cleverley and her then-girlfriend would not hold hands or show affection when they traveled outside Vermont. Another ex of Cleverley’s, who is also trans, lives in Washington. According to Cleverley, her ex struggles with a less accepting community.

ā€œIt’s very unique to be able to walk around my own state and be able to date the people I want to date and be able to be the gender I want to be,ā€ Cleverley said. ā€œI know that’s largely in part to all of the work that Bernie has done in the past to get equal rights for everybody in every aspect.ā€

Some, like 28-year-old African-American trans woman Elena Littlebug of Burlington, argue that Sanders hasn’t done enough for the LGBT community—and for the trans community specifically.

ā€œNeither of the remaining Democratic candidates have spoken to reforming policy that will help secure health care and public accommodations for trans people,ā€ she said. ā€œI’m still waiting to hear acknowledgement that the numbers of [killed] trans women of color are even alarming to these people.ā€

In 2015, 22 trans women were murdered in America, 19 of whom were trans women of color.

But Cleverley has hopes that if Sanders were to be elected, he would push for nationwide improvement for the lives of those in the trans and the LGBT community.

ā€œIf Bernie becomes president, he will make it so that every state views the LGBTQ community as a whole as a good thing. He will push for the rights for everybody, like he did for gay marriage. I mean, he did that in the ’90s and gay marriage just recently got legalized,ā€ said Cleverley. ā€œI don’t feel any other candidate will push for things that will end up benefiting people like me.ā€

Malnourished?
Maybe.

Sometimes miss a meal?
OK.

One fifth starving would be a famine.

Does it count number of contributions, or number of contributors?

I've already donated, so if I donate again would it add to the total?

I was being hyperbolic, the 1 out of 5 number refers to what CNN calls ā€œat risk of hunger,ā€ which means if the government wasn’t supplementing capitalism’s shortcomings 1 out of 5 children would be starving. Even still, WITH these government programs the number of ā€œat riskā€ being 1 out of 5 is staggering.
