Studies have shown that libertarians and conservatives are lacking in "empathic concern for others" while libertarians are particularly lacking in "perspective taking" (these are technical terms with corresponding psychometric constructs). It is all there in the libertarian psychology study I posted. The accusation that the people here lack empathy is well justified. I mean, the post I quoted which many here hailed as a "champion post" unapologetically and explicitly states that they have no empathy for the poor, going so far as to call them "scum".

What a crude caricature. These particular dissidents, and the majority of their ilk, do indeed lack empathy and compassion. I could name several libertarians who don't lack this flaw, my favorite of which Is Roderick Long but not many libertarians are bleeding heart libertarians. Most are frozen heart libertarians.

Where in that post you quoted does it say that the poster lacks empathy?

Pro Tip #1: It says he has no empathy for a specific thing, not that he lacks empathy in general.

Pro Tip #2: Oft times making blanket statements makes the person making the blanket statement appear quite foolish. Plus it's absurdly easy to point out just how poorly thought out their position is.

Because we live in a consumer economy where we need to have a thriving middle class. It doesn't have to be direct income, but it is the most efficient way to stimulate demand. I guess you could put stipulations on what you could buy with the capital, no paying down debt etc. We have the fractional* reserve system, why would you balk at running up deficits this way? It doesn't make sense.

And to be clear you could give this income to EVERYONE even the super rich, although that seems like overkill.

Where does this money come from that YOU want to give away? The government does not produce anything, their only income is from taxes and what not. I understand you mean spreading the wealth around, right?

Yes we have to spread the wealth around or you run into the problem marx very accurately described. His solution may not have been perfect, but the conflict is clear. And if you want the system to continue on you need to find a balance. We live in a consumer economy where more and more wealth is controlled by fewer people every day. And this hurts our society in an innumerable amount of ways. The most direct being sucking the wealth out of communities and leaving large swathes of the population destitute

But from an economic standpoint. There is no reason not to stimulate demand via direct income. Government deficits don't matter to an economy like ours

edit - and if they hadn't bailed out the banks that should have never gotten that large (they certainly would have with less regulation), our economy would have collapsed

The economy is vast, the stimulus was small, especially compared to giving tens of thousands of dollars away to each citizen a year.

who knows, you may get wealthy and its possible i will as well. The guy who invented snap chat in his college dorm just got offered 3 Billion dollars from Facebook. There are many examples of self made people in this country and others. Economic stimulus comes from productivity. Giving away other peoples money is not productivity.  And Socialism does not work. The more capitalist a society the more prosperous it is.

Yes I did, give consumers money to create demand. That's the type of stimulus I was talking about. Although saving some of the most massive financial institutions this world will hopefully ever see was necessary.

And I don't expect anyone to earn for me, but I don't expect to raise my children in a community that I'm not willing to pay for the betterment of. You're clearly uneducated, the income would serve and your family well.
