My situation regarding Coir Vs Grains
    #25860531 -

Hey guys, I’ve been doing so much reading and see many different opinions it’s making it hard to make a decision on what to do. My dilemma starts with me only having Spore Syringes I have the money for a nice pressure cooker and such, just at a standstill. I don’t have a problem following teks, and making sure surface conditions are optimal. Here’s what’s going on in my head.

I’ve seen a lot of people say inoculating grains jars with syringes is not the optimal way, but I’ve also read people say if you want to grow bulk correctly go grains. Before getting into agar, let’s say I must use BRF jars as spawn. Can I use BRF cakes to spawn onto a tub of grains? I guess I just wanted some “updated” opinions.

There are some awesome teks, the one tek I wanted to follow was mushboys shoebox tek but it looks like he even does grain jars spawned into CVG. I wouldn’t make a post, but I’ve done so much reading and see so many different opinions. If someone could just talk to me quick (lead me in the right direction,) and help me breath then I’ll feel better.

Before getting into agar, I’d be very happy to utilize BRF jars as spawn into a bulk tub. I truly appreciate your time, I don’t need to be spoon fed just led in the right direction.

I will always regret not getting directly into agar.

It was so easy and made my work so much better, I felt sheepish after my first few rounds of plates.

The best advice I could give you is don't be afraid of agar, and don't be afraid to fail.  Failure is a part of learning, and boy have I learned...

Do not spawn cakes to grain, major contaminate town.  The whole reason for cakes in the first place is it's a far more hospitable environment to myc than it is to bacteria, but the bacteria are in there for sure.

When you use agar you can be fairly certain that your culture is clean.  When you drop that clean culture on some grain (using good sterile technique) you get clean spawn that you cannot with cakes and direct spores to grain.

Spawning that clean spawn to Coir is how people get such nice results on here, along with precautions like providing good surface conditions in the tub.

TLDR:  Throw yourself at agar with no regrets.

No spores to grain.
No cakes to grain.

Agar is cheaper and easier than you think (I say from experience).

You can do syringe to grain, I have done it in a pinch. Your syringes are cleaner than most syringes, considering the vendor. You can do it and you will get results. Be as CLEAN and STERILE as possible and you have a fair chance.

If you want to get started this way you will have some success and some failure. If you drop $15 more dollars and start with a 20 petri sleeve of plates and 4oz of agar, you're going to get much much better results.

Do not do cakes to grain. If you do cakes, just shred to pure coir bulk in shoeboxes and you'll be fine.

If pouring agar is intimidating you can always get started on some no pour plates.

Use the site search function for "Pasty plates"

Edit out the vendor name dude it's the rules.

You can spawn BRF cakes to coir but I would just fruit them as cakes if it were me.

Grains need to be inoculated  colonized in sterile conditions, IE spawn bags or jars. I suppose you could inoculate grain with BRF by skipping the verm layer and using a GE after on the cake jars, and inoculate the grains G2G style, but you would have the extra (and potentially difficult) step of blending or breaking up the cake in sterile conditions first.

I suggest just learning the proper way from the beginning, get a nice clean culture on agar to put to grains. Then spawn to coir.

Ok you’re right, I’ll just go straight to agar. All the teks seem 10 years old, once I’m off work I’ll order everything to make agar but how do you make it? Do you follow and tek? Thanks man, I feel a lot calmer now. I think I’ve been reading too much, and just need to do it.

This cool cat likes house music for sure hehe!! Im just a cat lover/rescuer who enjoys house/break beats and such. And yes I’m just going to jump into agar and do grains, I’m reading too mich and stressing myself out.

Get into agar.  I started using MEA a few weeks ago and I’m never going back:grin:

I absolutely understand this. I get like this all the time. Agar is especially easy, but looks stupid intimidating.

Here: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/21922023

Start here. If you need to you can look at other stuff (https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22721954/vc/1#22721954) but that too can be intimidating to read, there's a ton of info. You know why? Because there's so many ways to do it that you can basically invent your own ways to make it work. I had even my most stupid ideas produce clean transferable mycelium.

Anyways, yeah, all of this is stupid easy once you see it happen in front of you. It is much easier to learn from your mistakes too once you've seen how it failed then you go back to the teks.

You got this!

Agar > grain > bulk

Spores to grain is a crap shot, everyday people post here asking what went wrong and how to salvage a jar with mold. Yeah if you don't have the back ground or exposure, agar can seem like rocket science, but it's not. You will save yourself a lot of headache, and money if you do it right. I know, I did it wrong and failed a lot, and it took me awhile to get back into this hobby.

No pour agar is super easy. But I hate how you can't really see what's going on. Pouring petri dishes is not hard.

Mistakes happen, we all end up throwing some work away. But if done right it's a learning experience, not a waste.

I feel like 95% of shroomery has this same story. It's like getting over your fear of agar is a rite of passage.

Wow. Agar was not specifically intimidating to me. It was sterilization and pasteurization that intimidated me.

I do feel that agar > grain > coir tub is the rightous path.
Personally i did cakes till i succeeded, moved on to agar/grain spawn/bulk tub, and the next stepping stone for me will be to successfully bulk grow cloned canopies of PE. After that maybe pan cyans.

When do i get to call myself an experienced mycologist?
Advanced wud be like PastyWhite.

What's in between? Avid?

So... I think the word you're looking for is Amateur. And I'm pretty sure that most of us will never move past that phase. I tell people I "work in mycology" in my spare time. I can't even create a true isolate from two unique spores, how could I ever be a full fledged mycologist? Either way, an amateur mycologist is still a mycologist.

:2cents:

Also, I would say that also, BRF Cake > Coir Bulk is a great starter path that should step up to your recommendation. This is because for many who aren't sure about the process, the $70+ dollar entry fee on a PC isn't a certainty. Being able to steam BRF cakes is a huge leg up to getting started, even when shredding to bulk.

Lately I've seen a few people dissing BRF Cakes as a starting point, and I think that's bullshit to do. If people aren't sure, BRF Cakes will get you enough experience to be sure. It's upsetting to see people knocking it so quickly. So ... putting a little more effort into speaking up about the positives of it (like not needing a PC).

First, you should edit out vendor name, could get your post deleted. Happened to me.

If I was you, I would start learn Agar. Easier than it looks. I used Bod's Agar write up to get it down. This will actually save you lots of time, money, and headaches! I didn't start with Agar, went with BRF cakes and ended up shredding them up for bulk grow. During there colonization time I learn Agar and will not look back.

There is a Tek that uses BRF cakes in a LI slurry to innoc grain but that's pretty advanced and need some expensive equipment.

Going spore syringe to grains is a crap shoot but some people pull it off. I don't suggest it (not that I'm an expert or anything, just a noob like you).

Good luck and enjoy your new hobby. It will become an obsession.

I just consider myself a cultivator, because that's what I do. I could probably get along alright in a spawn lab with a bit of training.  I also like to hunt wild mushrooms. Amateur mycologist. But I haven't studied fungi much further than medicinal and edible mushrooms.

You're experienced when you're experienced. I've been cultivating a solid 5 years now and I know what I'm doing, but I still have a lot to learn  we all do.
