No Pour Petri's Revelation
    #25811629 -

So I had a revelation that has come to fruition.

No pour petri's.

I know it's illegal to grow active mushrooms in most countries, which makes many members crimbo's. This is no reason to be filthy dirty stinking polluters.

I have been using glass petri's due to my distain for polystyrene, which should be outlawed IMO.
 over.

I had a failure of poured agar. No idea why  some blank plates just went green a week after pouring. I am also tired of waiting till agar cools enough to pour, without waiting too long. :grrr:

Normally I'd sterilize my Petri in the same PC run as my agar, then pour when cooler. I made a wire rack to stack 10 Petri covered with foil for the PC run.

Revelation. 30 mins before bed

Now I lay out my petri, lid off, pour the exact same amount into each. Lid em, stack em, wrap in foil, and PC. Turn off, go to bed.

As long as you let them cool naturally, they don't boil an come out glassy, with only the top few condensated.

I'm looking into stainless pasta cannisters for a more permanent container, just need to find someone to whip up some stainless racks as the galvanised wire ones I made are rusting after their first run.

Will photo the next run.

I'm adding 3-4mm 2% telephone Agar and my 60mmØ plates are 18mm deep.

Heat on high without weight until steaming, add weight, 25min cycle, turn off, and leave till morning?

I discovered this sterilizing the plates that went green. Glad (sameish saran) wrap melted, though easy to peel off borosilicate petri's.

Just curious why styrene petris should be outlawed.

^ That looks nice!

I don't see what's so hard about pouring, if you can manage agar work you should be able to pour plates

I would just sterilize the plates and pour

Someone told me the other day that you can put glass petri dishes in the oven wrapped in foil for sterilization. I'm not sure temp or duration but a quick search pulled this up

Not petri specifically, more polystyrene itself. Toxic crap that can't be recycled. In this country it's super expensive to dispose of for that reason, I.e. a skip containing polystyrene cost twice the price of removal than one without.

Discarded polystyrene does not biodegrade for hundreds of years and is resistant to photo-oxidation.

I fall to see why the clever minds in here can't find ways of avoiding the seemingly inevitable single use plastic problem.

Those don't ship here :-( and those that do (from Malaysia or India) cost heaps more, this the requirement for innovation. Shame the racks can't be made from number 8 fencing write (well they can, bit but though)

I just use the smallest size mason jars. They work great for no pours and I can resuse them forever.

Ooo cool link. I was about to start oven sterilizing them for next batch but that PC tek seems like itll be faster and avoid getting water in them.

Also good to know the usual plastic ones arent recyclable. Even more of a reason not to use. Been realizing lately recycling plastics is such a joke all over the world. Almost all of it gets shipped to China, then a lot of that gets tossed in the trash heap anyway for mundane ridiculous reasons with a fraction of the materials ever actually going through the process. Makes it all seem like more of a wasted effort flushing tax payer money down the toilet.

Here's a couple reasons to ban plastic in general: the ocean trash gyres, illegal plastic "recycling" (burning) in third world countries, the fact that seafood now contains quantifiable levels of plastic. There's many more.

Single use plastics are great if you care more about saving money and time than the impacts of plastic use. Anyone using single use plastics is fooling themselves if they think it's harmless. Pasty plates and glass petris are viable alternatives.

They should ban cigarettes too but they never will. People don't care about the consequences because everything is about money. Things won't change till they find a cheaper alternative.

Or the consequences become socially unacceptable. I think there's enough evidence that the consequences already are. They should be fully acknowledged.

If things never change after we realize they're wrong there would still be lead in gasoline, DDT would be in use, pregnant women would still be drinking alcohol etc.

To keep it on topic, my pasty plates have been reused many times now, probably more than 10. If they cost $4 for 8, and I reuse them 10 times, that's 5 cents each. The more you use them, the cheaper they get. Unlike single use which are a fixed cost and much like the waste they produce, their cost keeps accumulating over time.

Glass is even better but you can't walk into a grocery store and buy them.

I posted this because of the convenience factor, as no pour makes the process quicker, cheaper and with less waste, thats win/win/win for me because I was starting with pouring glass plates.

One thing that I found difficult with pouring plates was getting a consistent depth of agar. Pouring with glass is harder than pp as the stacks are heavier/slipperier, and lifting the lid is a contamination vector due to the lid touching the plate/bench/grate below.

If we talk cost, over time petri's end up being very cheap, as long as there's no breakage.

Yea it's a shame no pours are kinda shit at the things that matter, like being able to see what is going on in there really good without taking the lid off.

Unless you have a flowhood and can 'dry' your petri some can be pretty hard to see through also.

You can get a good idea from the back side with a strong light.

Oh to have a flowhood and be able to take a lid off and see the glassy goodness. . .

Or they all suffocate because their love of petrochem's convenience interrupt phytoplankton making O2.

Cost drives 'willing change' sometimes. Laziness Trump's most things. . .

So I’ve found that condensation can be problematic in glass petri.

Too much condensate can bring any non-sterile contaminants from your hands into your plate.

As the lid of glass petri touches what it is sitting on, then is captured inside your cling/para film, potentially contaminating the edge of the plate.

Back to pour agar. If/when I get a flowhood, I’ll try no pour again.
