My theory on why the American community is breaking down * 2
    #25649829 -

It has been occurring slowly, but surely. I feel that America is losing its sense of community, not just within the nation itself, but that all communities are breaking down. People don't know their neighbors anymore, lots of people go to schools/colleges and have no idea who any of their classmates are. Little kids who have little to no friends aren't even all that uncommon anymore.

In the past two decades, we've been seeing some more deadly symptoms of this breakdown in the American community. Mass shootings, a disturbing increase in mental health issues, anxiety and depression especially. We've seen entire online communities forming to express violent rage over the state of society today. Incels, white nationalists, hardcore Trump supporters, BLM, Antifa. Personally, I get a strong feeling that there is an incredible amount of anger and frustration out there right now about how our society is turning out.

I believe that the increase in mass shootings is a symptom of that anger, and I think the American community is breaking down into small groups who are beginning to hate each other more and more as time goes on. I don't like where society is going right now. I believe that a large amount of the problems we are seeing in society right now, are symptoms of slowly deteriorating communities across America.

Some people blame the Internet for this phenomenon. I disagree, if anything, the internet has prevented this from becoming a true catastrophe. Instead, what I think is really behind this breakdown of the American community, is the increasing pressure to meet social expectations. Not only is the pressure to succeed higher than ever, but its easier than ever to fuck up now than it was before. From my research, a community cannot function unless members of the community are allowed to fuck up a little. To a reasonable degree of course, but once a community starts expecting perfection from its members is when it starts to break down. You need a community where a minor scandal isn't going to ruin your life and is nothing more than neighborhood gossip that people forget about in a week.

Instead, I feel that it is easier than ever to make a minor fuck up, and then get ostracized from the American community than it ever was. With today's hypersensitivity culture, say one thing that maybe wasn't even racist but got interpreted as such and you're fucked, say something a little too sexually forward and you're now a misogynistic pig that people will demand be fired, had sex with a college girl while you were both drunk and can barely remember it? Well she can now claim it was rape and you will forever be branded an evil rapist. Get caught with marijuana and had to go to prison? Well now that's on your criminal record for the rest of your life and your chances of getting a job are fucked. Do a little badly in school, maybe skip one too many classes? Well congratulations, you graduated with a GPA that's less than 3.0 so now you're totally fucked because employers don't want a GPA less than 3.0. You can't take a gap year either because that means you're not ambitious.

The fact is, American society has become punish happy. We're far too eager to punish people and we don't seem to understand how to temporarily punish people anymore. Nowadays, its either no punishment, or its a permanent punishment. We also have no real way of allowing ostracized/punished people to redeem themselves. We ostracize people from "the community" in the blink of an eye. With this attitude, its no wonder so many people are starting to feel a deep seated frustration towards a community that seems determined to ostracize as many people as possible for the most minor of fuck ups. And once you're ostracized, you're ostracized forever and are delegated to the outcast/loser communities.

I think mass shooters, BLM, and hardcore Trump supporters are a symptom of this because they are all people who feel like they've failed to meet society's expectations and just want to tear society down and start over. Whether they realize this is what they want or not, lots of people right now want a really radical change to the way we're running things because most people are actually failing to meet the ridiculously high expectations that are being set for us. The expectation, get a bachelor's degree, graduate in four years and get a job right out of college, is being achieved by such a small minority of people. 8% of the population can't even finish high school, an additional 17% gets a high school diploma but does not go on to college. Out of the 75% who do go to college, almost half of them drop out or settle for an associate's degree which leaves us with 40% of the population achieving a bachelor's. Out of the people who got a bachelor's a lot of them got them from crappy schools, they barely managed to make it and have terrible grades, or it took them forever to graduate which means that they now aren't able to even get a job. So 40% is actually quite misleading.

With this many people failing to meet society's expectations, is it any surprise that things are falling apart? If we are going to prevent the American community from utter collapse, we need to lower the bar, and we need to give people room to fuck up and not ostracize them from the community for doing so.

I appreciate your diagnosis of the problem(s), and I find your hypothesis interesting, though perhaps not fundamental. I feel the disintegration of American culture has been brewing for decades, and is rather complex and multifaceted. Your reasoning is not faulty, and I think it's actually quite good, but it isn't the whole story, which is broader and more general. In any case, it's a very solid and thoughtful post.

an interesting thesis:

punish happy.

reminds me of the French revolution's vigorous phase, when they were using the guillotine as public entertainment to get social bonding through swift violent cleansing of humans who are in the way of the manic mass.

then again is it may also be related to the time when Americans like to sweep the prairies clear of buffalo and the indigenous people who relied on it for food.

'Course the Roman colosseum hosted Gladiator battles which served a similar social outlet, and that was 2000 years ago.

maybe anyone who does not agree with you is either "Cree, Mohawk, loyalist or buffalo" - either way it's time for machine assisted cleansing - RSVP - serving beer with chips after!

I agree with a lot of what you said, but it's hard to fully understand where youre coming from when you didnt really go into any detail as to what the solution is.

We have social heirarchy, expectations, and ostracizing hard wired into our DNA, as has been shown in everything from lobsters to chimps. It's all ultimately nearly as hard to eradicate as sexual attraction. I dont see society putting in the necessary self-work to rise above the hindbrain thinking.

By your very worldview, you're manifesting what it is that you're against. Very easily you can build strong communities around you, and achieve a state where society only seems ill when you search for the sickness.

As cliche as it is, the only thing you can really change is yourself. The rest will go to shit whether you spend your life worrying about it, or spend it building up around you that which you see as lacking elsewhere. It is contagious, once you learn to heal yourself of society's ills, you'll naturally be doing your part to heal society.

America is a new country. compared to the rest, in Europe, it is young (this is an explanation, not an excuse) -- Europe is GULLIBLE, and History proves this without a shadow of a doubt, and History continues to prove it.

America is not as gullible in the same respects, but just as gullible in an inherently different respect, and that is, that they realize not that their "world" is New- even if it's not completely new. there are those who, in their zeal for religion and for idealism, will waver from the revolutionary victory of the secession, to the wont to "go back" -- for God, and King's, sake.

this is not solely an American phenomenon, however, regardless of it's youth- in Europe the same thing occurs, only they are more gullible to the notion that 'they can uplift nations' through X, Y and Z. America, in it's bucolic haze for the idealized past, miss that this catastrophe of human evolution and natural progression, has it's antecedents in The OLD, and miss the fact of what they've attained in The New. they then fight internally about wont to 'go back' or 'continue to proceed forward', abandoning the reasons of their liberation- to 'stay put' and 'live freely'. now, they abandon "freedom" for the wont of those of the EU and of other national bodies- and of other international unions, i might add- to be an influence on American politics.

and on the otherhand, you have people who "want to go back" or even better yet, "want to remain put", all while criticizing where their money comes from, "biting the hand that feeds" (people both on the left, and on the right, do this-- socialists, to conservatives). Europe continues to remain richer than rich (again informing the world of a lie), all while America tries to attain the same enfolding, of government powers, over freedoms, and lies, over everything else.

jerry springer set the bar..  when society started putting all their personal drama out there for the world to see while slapping each other in the face,  american people found that entertaining and I think it started the whole downward spiral.  I am embarrassed and humiliated to think that any foreign persons first glimpse of american tv could be Maury or jerry, or some other appalling stupid shit.  fuuuuuck.

we used to have family shows like little house on the prairie, full house, family ties, who's the boss, etc.  and then came jerry springer.  now you have reality shows like Kardashians, desperate housewives, etc.  fuck we even have a reality TV show host for president.  America is a bunch of helmet and bib pudding eaters

oh yeah, and we are the corporation of the united states.  we are not a republic anymore.  we sold out to corporations a long time ago.  the world bank (a private bank owned by the rothschilds and international banking cartel (bilderburg group and so on) those people own the world bank and federal reserve.  Hense America

cyber war is already happening, computer vulnerabilities are for sale for millions to governments and corporations, on the "black market". and Stuxnet and Nitro Zeus and Flame paved the way to infrastructure level taking down of an entire country. This is without discussing Fuckashima, and other nuclear power plants built on fault lines, acidification of the oceans, cutting down of the rain forests, new exposure to potential cross species viruses from bushmeat from logging the rainforests in Africa (where AIDs came from), space junk, unknown long term effects of GMOs loose in the environment, predicted population growth, unprecedented income inequality, nuclear  stockpiles, and waste, and so on & on ... no politicians, no religious leaders, & no scientists will 'save' humans, so they can continue business as usual, for generations to come.

Mass depression, anger, and hatred is fueled by a lack of human connectivity and community.

Mass killers who shoot into a crowd do not have close intimate loving relationships.

Now, most people spend much more time on electronic devices than interacting with others.

America will be around as long as the military won't subvert the civilian leadership and money flows their way.

Now society yes is different.  Been so since the early 60s.  Mainly class, race, and identity issues.  People are choosing sides based on identity.  Instead of dropping identity and ego, it's consuming society.

I dropped out before signing on.  I still struggle with interests that were blown based what I practiced.  My indentity at times see's the value at what I then resented and most usually still do.  I was a small tine natural drug user who sonetimes fell ibto synthetic.  Didn't deal, didn't grow much ever.  Only had a 250w.  Now at times I look back and favor those that had game.

People need to drop the identity game.  Even so called religion is an identity game.  So called saved people, versus the damned.  Identity is bullshit, it does nothing for survival.

People get too emotional about identity.  Emotions, high or low, create stress.  Stress creates illness and social disharomony.  The whole point of shamans is too heal the emotions or spirit of people.  To create balance.

Religious leaders today think it's their job to divide, same with political leaders.

The Green Book by Muammar Gaddafi is a good read. I like thesis and I posted a similar rambling today. There is also a fantastic series Century of Happiness on youtube about the social engineering that took place in the 20th century that has lead us to this precipice.

This is happening across all Westernised nations, to a greater or a lesser degree. Please don't fall into that 'oh-so-American' trap of getting lost in your own microcosm without looking at the bigger picture triphead.

From your OP, it strikes me that you focus too much on symptoms and not enough on cause.

Why is modern, advanced civilisation failing so miserably to provide humans what they really need?
