Quitting cigarettes and alcohol * 3
    #25590750 -

It has been almost 30 years I have done these things. I was given enlightenment last year and sadly I did not change. I am now.

A week ago I had my last cigarette and two weeks ago my last alcoholic drink.

Most notably I am quick to anger, however I do realize I’m doing it and catch myself. The thing I find really weird and just wasn’t expecting is the fact I am rarely tired. When I fall asleep I wake in a couple of hours completely refreshed. Also I have a seriously sore throat.

I know it’s only been a week, but I am happy I am making this change.

Has anyone else gone through this?  12 steps or AA?  Any advice or groups that help?

Probably the wrong forum, but i guess it really depends on what you expect to receive.
One thing i always found helpful was when i received a craving, i never though, 'shit i rally want  a drink right now' i had to think 'shit the addiction really wants a drink right now.'

This separates the addiction from yourself so that you don't identify with the addiction. This helps overcome it. I've fallen off the wagon since, but that mind set did help when i was making progress.

it gets way easier

if you can kick the stuff without doing 12 step programs, I would go that route. they become very insular for a lot of people, like going to church.

Yeah I didn’t know which forum to put this, figured it would get bitchy and consider I’m quitting drinking the pub is funny.

I don’t think 12 steps are for me. They push the surrendering your life to a higher power and that you are hopeless. I am not a big fan of that. I fully believe in god and yes I think he watches over us. However our life is our own. There is no one to blame but ourselves.

I am going to need to find many hobbies.

I think the prayer aspect of AA can be helpful for some, but it's basically just a form of CBT

My dad smoked for 35 years and had to quit. For the oral fixation thing he used toothpicks. Seems weird but yeah. I don't think I've ever met someone who didn't benefit from removing those things from their life including myself. Wish you all the best in that endeavour

I'm kinda retarded, so help a brother out. You smoked and drank for 30 years? So you are like 50?

It is just a really awkward phrase to say that "Quitting cigs and alcohol, it has been almost 30 years  you have done that" and then proceed to talk about how you are trying to quit.

I quit drinking about 2 years ago. It's tough and I'm still figuring it out when people want to go hang out in a bar and that is about the last place I want to go.

Doalrite: Please keep an eye on your BP and heart health.  While quitting alcohol and nicotine together successfully can be seen as commendable and will in time lead to health improvements, the fact is that potential issues in the timeframe shortly following are not just mental and emotional, especially for those ov advanced age.  Many decades long smokers have had heart attacks and strokes shortly after cold turkey cessation.  This is a fact mostly ignored by the anti-smoking consensus, and while pushing this agenda may be good natured, it is not fully sedulous towards maintaining harm reduction.  Just a fair warming.

Now that you mention it my dad had just quit smoking a few months prior when he had his stroke. I think he was 53 at the time. I'm pretty sure my uncle was trying to quit too

I'm sorry to hear that.  It really needs to be more well known that these problems occur VERY frequently in 50y/o+ long term smokers during the months after abrupt cessation so people can take measures to reduce the likelihood.  It's terrible to think that someone going through the arduous process ov improving their health by quitting is then suddenly faced with a serious life-threatening condition.  Much like with other drug addictions, people who oppose it will often ignore potential problems associated with rehabilitation so as to not scare away those wishing to recover.  This is not the right outlook as harm reduction does not have bias or judgment.

Good luck!

No I’m about 40, been smoking and drinking since about the age of ten, I was a full blown alcoholic by the age of 14.

I have ragged out mylife because I hated it. Now I don’t. I love life.

I don’t even have the itch to drink or smoke, yet... but I suppose it’s all frame of mind.

Stepping up my game of life.
Cutting back on all processed food.
Dehydrating my own foods in my commercial dehydrator.
Learning agar.,.i don’t know if was me being scared or lazy.. prob both.
Reorganizing my home.
Reading and writing more
Going to the gym

Thanks I do appreciate it. I have been to the doctors and I am monitoring myself the best I can. Making sure to drink plenty of water.

Our body is like a car. However it is the only vehicle our mind is ever given. I have dinged mine up a bit. I just need to take it to the shop, get it reupholstered and buffed out. Get it smelling good again.

Gonna take some time which is cool but the next time I roll down the strip I won’t be embarrassed to take some hot honey for a ride

It was fifty years smoking for me. I ditched the booze as soon as I could grow legally. The booze was not an issue for me, went from a quart of vodka a day to no need. Cigs, that is a difficult aspect to cut loose. Smoking apparently was the punctuation of my event. It was the period after a meal or a comma to pause a moment. I still have a knee jerk to reach for one, but as I have revoked my permission to acquire as an exercise, it is similar to brushing away a troublesome fly or such.

May i ask,

Did you gain weight from the prozac?

Any sexual problems?

Did it help with depression? And is it easy to stop taking it?

Yea, I smoked for 50 years and  drank daily for about 45.
My alcohol consumption really got out of hand coincidentally around the time I joined the Shroomery :uhoh:

5 years ago a 30 day detox/rehab plus AA got me started on staying sober, I quit the tobacco 3 years later.
I also was treated and cured of my 30 years of having HCV and am currently being treated for my liver disease.

I was flagged years ago for C, turns out I never had it. Off topic sorry, ten years ago I had a Whipple procedure for pancreatic cancer. Extensive pre-procedure testing showed I had the antibodies but never the virus. While in recovery the lead surgeon confirmed to me, even after years of alcohol consumption and pancreatic cancer, he said it was as healthy a liver as he had inventoried.

I gained ~20lbs

Sex drive is repressed but active still.

Helped at first, but not doing much for me now besides robbing me of full emotional experiences.

It is not easy to stop taking it, the withdrawal is hell and requires stepping down the meds.  I'm going from 20mg a day to 10mg starting today.
