First off, I agree with Ravus. Antidepressants treat the symptoms rather than the problem itself. They're like periodically chopping off the top of a weed instead of digging up the root of the plant to get rid of it. It will keep growing back until you get to the root of your problem.

I could have been prescribed medication in the past for social anxiety, suicidal depression, and ADD. However, I chose to take the harder road and see why I felt the way I did, especially for the first two which I knew I had complete control over. I was able to overcome both, and you know why? BECAUSE I HAD COMPLETE CONTROL OVER THEM. When it comes to social anxiety or depression, you are not a victim. It's not a bacterial infection or cancer.

Social anxiety had been a big problem for me all my life. It was a battle fought every day inside my mind, and every time I lost. But slowly I began to realise that my social phobias were irrational and illogical, and they began disappearing. I'm no longer shy or verbally reserved. Depression had also been a problem for most of my life. But then I realized: the world we live in sucks. Our society is not a beautiful picnic in the park where everyone is happy. No, it's shitty. So I got over it. I realized I wasn't going to change this shitty world into something better by myself, so I decided to find happiness from within rather than without. I still feel depression pushing in on my from outside from time to time, from my environment. However, now I know that it comes from outside and not from within me. What's in my mind I can change. I can't change the materialist society we live in or the noise of living in a city or the unfriendly people I run into.

I still have problems with ADD but I refuse to take medication for it, simply because I know if I have enough willpower, I can turn that will into FOCUS and ATTENTION. I can see it working a little and I know that one day I can be free of this too.

Life is hard work. Life is suffering. Face your problems. Stop running from them or hiding them under the rug with a little blue pill hoping they'll go away, because they won't!

End my rant. As you can see I feel quite strongly about this issue.  :wink:

My point was that taking antidepressants and getting to the root of and solving your problems AREN'T mutually exclusive. The key is to see antidepressants as just one tool in the depression-combatting kit (others being therapy, improving one's physical health, setting goals, accepting the world for what it is, etc) rather than a cure-all miracle drug. Taking anti-depressants is not necessarily "running away" from one's problems. Sometimes it is precisely what enables someone to face his or her problems.
And like I said before, depression is a medical condition. You can't fault someone for having screwed up serotonin levels. So in that way it IS like a bacterial infection or cancer.
Props to you for solving your problems without meds, but don't assume that you are superior to those who do take them.

I believe alot of depression we see in our current society is just a result of the unnatural, irrational, and illogical ways of living we hasve developed.

Humans were not ment work at a desk from 9-5 5 days a week. Humans were not ment to sit around and do nothing for the majority of their day. That is were alot of the depression is comming from, i believe.

Its all about our situations, and depression is just a result of our system.

Sure i believe there are some people that naturally have low serotonin, but i also believe that most teenagers that are being prescribed antidepressants are really just lacking richness in their lives. Their lacking understanding, their lacking what they need most. Our education systems are horrible. They teach people to not think, they teach you to be closed minded. As a result you get ADHD, and depression.

ADHD is BS.

So what, a kid cant sit down for 6 hours and listen attentivley, so lets drug him!

Wow he pays attention now, and he does all his homework in one sitting..

ADHD is a diagonosis created by the government  to force children to conform to the system. By going against natural tendencies, sedative drugs are given to children so they conform and fit into the system.

Depression while sometimes legit, is an excuse created because the system  truley is not satisfing human needs. So lets give them drugs to make the current system satisfy them, instead of solving the root of the problem wich is the system itself.

Its all ugly nasty shit.

I hate the cop out that depression is caused by a "chemical imbalance". Who says whats balanced and whats not? Furthermore, even if this were the case ... what caused it in the first place?

The main problem with antidepressants is they are over-prescribed by doctors who are nothing more than glorified drug pushers. Most doctors/researchers still have no clue how antidepressants work. there is still so much to be learned that even the leading minds in this field couldnt tell you what the meds they prescribe/develope will do to someone.

American culture is full of temptations that lead to unhealthy lifestyles. too often people are unwilling to make the difficult changes in their self-destructive lifestyle and turn to drugs for a quick fix. Antidepressents being the socially sanctioned drugs are becoming more and more popular. Since there is so much money to be made from this market doctors are all too eager (they are trained to think this way) to fill out a prescription and give their patients that illusion of a quick fix rather than tell them the hard fact they they may need to make some drastic changes in their lifestyle to get healthier.

Plus this type of thing has been going on forever in america. Its the sickness at the heart of the american dream. The american dream has always been largly about avoiding the pain of everyday and finding a way to live in ever lasting luxury. Unfortunatly, this is and always will be nothing more than a pipe dream. The human soul needs to feel pain and anguish and torment in order to grow and thrive.

The American Dream will kill you dead.

If you have access to a copy of "Requiem For a Dream" the directors cut dvd watch the extra entitled "Memories, Dreams and Addictions" its very good.

To the anti-meds contingent: just wondering, does your anti-meds extend to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia as well, or are you singling depression out?
Also, do you use recreational drugs? I won't assume that you do simply because you are posting at the shroomery (seeing as some people are just here for the S&P board), but if you do, do you think it's inconsistent to accept recreational drugs but not medical ones?
Psikooz: I really liked a lot of the points that you made. Absolutely a lot of depression is induced by the stifling, mindless nature of our society. Getting outside of that system and making one's life more fulfilling is a crucial step to happiness. I'm curious though, what's your take on depression in times before consumerism and office cubicles?

This is a good point.

Props to you for solving your problems without meds, but don't assume that you are superior to those who do take them.
I hope I didn't come across as though I'm better than those who feel the need to take meds, because I didn't mean to. I was trying mostly to motivate and inspire those currently suffering to solve their problems rather than just treat them.

As for the use of other drugs, it's the fact that people are taking these drugs to feel normal. You don't take psychedelics to feel normal. You may also think of pain medications, which people use to feel normal. But for those there isn't any real problem that can fixed without a doctor's intervention or alternative methods. And in the case of something like a headache, the medication actually does solve the problem instead of hiding it for a certain amount of time. So again, those drugs are different. Antidepressents can be thought of as mental pain relievers. They make the pain go away while you're medicating, but it will almost always return once off the meds unless the underlying problem is taken care of.

One more thing. I'd be very interested in any literature dealing with depression before the industrial revolution and especially prior to the 20th century. I'm willing to bet a large sum of money there were much less cases, because either people succumbed to suicide or they dealt with it.
