Depression is just egotism

I've noticed in my life that I've never met a selfless person who was depressed, and that all the selfish people I know suffer depression.

The conclusion is that only the ego gets depressed, and that people suffer depression to the degree that they are egotistical.

This seems intuitive to me because it is only the ego that wants things, ergo it is only the ego that gets disappointed by not getting things, ergo it is only the ego that suffers.

As a selfish person that get's severely depressed, I agree with you.  I will be more selfless from now on.

So what if somebody is depressed because they realize the world, or at least the people that inhabit it, are all about materialism?

Depressed because they know life isn't all about working to acquire all material things and really only want to live happily, but cant because this world requires money to do so.

Depressed because they know that ego is what rules this world pretty much

In a sense. But I also mean non-material things such as social status, respect for one's intellect, to be cherished by others etc.

A question: what part of you feels depressed because ego rules the world? Could it be... your ego?

Haha, for me depression is an inward thing.  Well, it's me being unsatisfied with how I am, or unsatisfied with how other people are, but every time you point the finger at someone else you are actually talking about yourself.

I reckon this is usually true.

Disclaimer: I have been on anti-depressants on and off for 20 years and consider myself moderately selfish and egotistical. Maybe a 6 out of 10.

I think what you've said is complete crap, my grandfather was one of the most peaceful, stress free, and charitable people I've had the fortune to know.  Until he developed a form of dementia due to a small series of strokes that started with loss of balance, then memory loss, personality changes, then slurred speech, that progressed to total immobility.  He became deeply depressed, for the last couple of years of his life he could only write out small messages on his pocket computer like "please shoot me" and "my wife must think i'm such a pain in the ass".  There's all sorts of reasons people become depressed, no reason to assume it's because they're excessively selfish or self-absorbed and unable to think of others.

I guess it could be.


For instance. Sometimes i feel depressed because of my job. I feel that it is a dead end job that will keep me in the same spot.

Id like a job that pays good enough for me to not have to worry, about worrying lol. Being able to travel and what not, but unfortunately that requires material things which require money.

I guess you are right in a sense, but i don't believe that makes somebody selfish.

well i dont know selfless people can usually be pretty depressed too, helping others can just be another form of satisfying yourself or your ego too.. but what other part of you other than your ego would get depressed? and if you are talkingin freudian terms isnt the id that is the thing wanting things, but rlly way too easy to boil it down to one generalized thing, like being human is the reason you are depressed..

Im sure depression is very common.


How can a person making less than $20,000 a year make rent, pay a car payment, pay for food, car insurance, electricity, gas for vehicle etc. And not get depressed at least sometimes with all of that going on.


Then again, you can call that the ego "talking." Because who actually needs all of the said things to live happily?

Not this.  That's like a Christian saying until you take the blame and repent, Jesus won't love you.  Taking responsibility is seeking treatment, in therapy that at least in part involves coming to understand the major stressors in your life, including early childhood rearing and the way it has imprinted you.
