Being egotistical
    #5999380 -

is it egotistical to remark on what somebody has said, or comment that somebody is egotistical from what they said?

are we all egotistical because we want to get in our opinion and debate it to the ends of earth?

the ego is that part of your internal dialogue that gets you to say if something is cool or uncool.
your personal opinions of your likes and dislikes.

a persons opinion is not always FACT or TRUTH
and this is why ego gets in the way of touching Universal Truths.

the ego is sort of crucial to our lives as it helps us find a mate and have sex, and to aquire food, and stuff like that.
although it serves no purpose toward spiritual enlightenment, and must be removed to really aquire a clear insight into the nature of things, uncontaminated by personal opinions.

but without the ego would be get any clear insights of things? isn't it our ego that define what those insights are?

The ego classifies. If, for example, one likes the color red better than the color blue, then the ego has spoken. However, a person can appreciate both red and blue, without liking one more than the other, accepting them both equally for what they are. Without the ego to classify, the two colors become one in the same. Hidden within this paradox is...

So is nihilism a form of ego loss? As in:
"Which colour do you prefer Billy, red or blue?"
"My life is an endless sequence of events, the contents and setting of which has lost all meaning to me. So in answer to your question I am indifferent to both."

> My life is an endless sequence of events

Nope, not by that statement at least. Without ego, there is no perceived difference between events, thus there is no sequence to experienced events.

> So in answer to your question I am indifferent to both

Again, being "indifferent to both" implies the experience of more than one event, or the classification of events in order to differentiate them from one another.

I think there is a sense that we are already utilizing different definitons of the word "ego" in this thread.

Spudamore, perhaps the manner in which you are using the term is as the illusory sense of self. You know, your mind's preconceptions of your identity, what makes you feel what, how you act in this situation, etc. etc. etc.

Eh?

Then to be clear, I view the ego as that which judges, classifies, or differentiates one thing from another.

Myself included, yes. There are times that we may loose our sense of judgement, but those are typically fleeting and far between. The difference between knowing the path and being the path, so to speak.

even those that think they are spiritually freer or more open than others, thats really funny nobody is even really free of their ego even that they think they are, we all may have moments of being ego free but beyond that we come back to ego to try and grasp that moment when really we should just let it be, with out grapsing something that we cannot make definable. so moments like these

There is a funny paradox with colors:
Most associate blue to cold and red to warm, so if it's cold you prefer red and if it's hot, you will prefer blue.
The paradox is, that the blue wave physically holds more energy then the red ones  But for our physical body, red makes warmth and blue will burn you away
The subjectivity of the ego. It only tries to 'stabilize' the relations for you to survive.
...just a thought...

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiant_energy:

The important line is "the energy carried by each photon is proportional to its frequency".

If you take a flashlight and shine it into a prism, you see a rainbow. What you actually see are the photons at different frequencies getting spread out with red at one end and blue at the other. Because the energy is proportional to the frequency, the red photons (with a lower frequency) have less energy than the blue photons (with a higher frequency).

However, we think of blue as being a cool while we think of red as being hot. (As you continue up the blue side of the spectrum, you end up going through the microwave range and the xray range...)

Check out some Ayn Rand... everyone is egotistical. It's impossible not to be. And the people who call you egotistical as an insult are likely just pissed off that dared have a mind of your own and had the balls to speak it. Either that or they just don't have anything else clever to say.
