No no no!!!

I mentioned that Lincoln had been unsuccessful several times at different things he attempted, but he went on to be President, which is a success story, because how many people become president?

You turned it into a socio-political ladder climb! I'm just saying that we should try to be successful at what we attempt, but we may fail. But that doesn't mean we are failures, it just means that there is something else we were meant to do, as in Lincoln's case.

I turned it into nothing. You said being elected president is a success. I disagree. I say that living life to a ripe old age is more successful than climbing the political ladder.

I did not say that being elected president is a success!  You are deliberately twisting my words.  Men!  :shake:  Okay, going to go slow for you here, princess....

If you want to be president, go be president!  At least try! 

If you want to be a garbage collector, go be a garbage collector!  At least try! 

We can be anything we want, as long as we don't let our fears get in the way.  Lincoln tried a variety of things, and was unsuccessful.  Then he tried to be president, and he succeeded.  He could have taken his past failures and let them inhibit him from trying to become president, but he didn't.  He tried anyways, and was successful at it.  He became one of our most memorable presidents.

Would you rather be a grocery store clerk and live to 76 or be a "succesful" lawyer (in OC that means driving the latest model BMW woo-woo! and making payments on a tiny $450,000 condo), piss a convicted client off and have him come after you and kill you at age 46?

Oh, well, here we go!  You just had to open the door for me to start a discussion on karma!  :grin:

If part of karma is that we may die when whatever it is that we were supposed to learn or accomplish while we were here, then regardless of whether I die as a 76-year old grocery store clerk or a 46-year old attorney has nothing to do with success. 

Living as long as possible, regardless of what one accomplished in one's life, is not a measure of success.

What did you do while you were alive?  Did you hide from life and play it safe?  Or did you go for it and take all the risks you needed to take in order to accomplish what you believe was your purpose for being here? 

I can play it safe and hide in doors for the rest of my life, and when I turn 80, think, "Whew!  Made it!  Boy, what a success I am!  Look at all the friends I had that died before me!  Those unlucky bastards!"

Or, I can go out and take risks, and die any where along my journey. 

The death doesn't come as a result of my risk-taking.  The death comes as a result of karma.

Do you have a need to tie success into being killed before you've hit your life expectancy? If the success is automatic (cf. the original question), then a person with at least half a liter of brains would go for a succesful life as a lawyer in O.C., with a dying age of about 80.

Back to the question. I agree with the statement that anything requiring no effort loses its value after a while, but I'll assume for the sake of the question that there's just one thing you can do without a chance of failure.

If the chance of success were 1 to 1, I'd go for a position that allows me to stick to my personal ethics AND amass about 50 million (euros or dollars would depend on which has higher value at the time of becoming omnipotent) in, say, one year.
Then, I'd retire, and do some charity work, write my own metaphysics, write ten books or so, learn to build guitars, and travel the world.
